Audi A5

The coupés represent the most passionate branch within each house. Models that bet everything on aesthetics, forgetting a certain practicality. The Audi A5 is the house bet in that market. A compact sedan that has been with us since 2007, when the first of its already two generations was launched on the market.

The second of them landed in 2016. The A5 is a successful model within Audi. integrated into the family of Audi A4, the coupe version has achieved attract a more demanding public with forms than with function. In 2020 it undergoes a facelift, a restyling that updates the model and associates it with the current brand image.

The Audi A5 is presented in a multitude of formats and bodies. From Ingolstadt a total strategy with respect to the coupé has been raised. Classic two-door body, called coupe, five-door version called Sportback, and the most passionate option of all, the COpened. To this we must add mechanical units of all kinds and power, offering high-performance versions: the Audi S5 y Audi RS 5.

Technical characteristics of the Audi A5

Beneath the sculpted bodywork of the Audi A5 hides the Volkswagen Group's MQB Evo platform. It is a well-known architecture, used in other models such as the A4. That means that we can include it within the category of compact sedans, within segment D.

The MQB platform leaves us with some measures 4,69 meters long, 1,84 meters wide and 1,37 meters high. These measures apply to both the coupé body and the convertible version, although in that case the height rises 1 centimeter. The five-door unit, Sportback, extends these dimensions, reaching 4,75 meters long, 1,84 meters wide and 1 meters high.

The battle also changes depending on the chosen format. While the Coupé and Cabrio have a 2,76 meter wheelbase, the Sportback reaches 2,82 meters, being therefore the most habitable of all with a maximum capacity of five passengers. In terms of load capacities, the most capable is the Sportback with 465 liters minimum capacity. It is followed by the Coupé with 450 liters and finally the Cabrio with only 370 liters.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Audi A5

Under the hood, the Audi A5 is capable of sporting one of Audi's largest mechanical portfolios. Being in the mid-range, it has versions that cover medium and high power levels. Power output is higher than its A4 twin because the A5 customer is looking for a different kind of drive. Thanks to that It has two diesel and three gasoline formats. As standard, all models come with an S Tronic automatic gearbox, and only the most powerful engines can access a quattro all-wheel drive scheme.

The diesel access version starts in the A5 35 TDI variant with 163 horsepower and 370 Nm of torque. It has a four-cylinder turbocharged engine and two liters of displacement with an MHEV electrical scheme that allows it to offer the DGT ECO label. With the same configuration we find the A5 40 TDI with 204 hp and 400 Nm of torque. After the 2020 update, the 50 TDI unit disappears from the range given its high emissions.

The gasoline side only has three performance levels. The access is A5 35 TFSI with 150 horsepower and 270 Nm of torque. It mounts an auxiliary electrical diagram that allows it to homologate the advantageous ECO label of the DGT common to the entire range. Immediately above it, and using the same motor, is located called 40 TFSI with 204 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque. The gasoline offer closes with the A5 45 TFSI with 265 hp and 370 Nm of torque. Above it only S and RS units are available.

Equipment of the Audi A5

Being an Audi we are talking about a very well equipped model. Despite its commercial age, the A5 has managed to evolve in its latest restyling to grow in all aspects, including technology. To this enormous number of systems must be added a lot of quality from very well chosen materials. All this gives it the Premium character so mentioned in the brand.

However, Audi does not usually offer much equipment in the access levels. To get all the technology that the Audi A5 is capable of having, you have to choose to scratch your pocket. It comes standard with elements such as LED headlights, air conditioning, cruise control, multimedia system and parking sensors, among other outstanding equipment such as an assortment of driving assistants and safety elements.

Audi offers several trim levels: Advanced, S Line and Black S Line. At each jump we not only improve the equipment load, we also modify the general appearance of the A5, going from a neutral style to a more sporty one in the specific packages. In these sports units, part of the optional equipment is presented to improve dynamics and driving, such as carbon-ceramic disc brakes or sports suspension systems.

In due course, at the launch of the second generation in 2016, the A5 was subjected to the relevant crash tests by Euro NCAP. By mounting the same platform and systems as the A4, it shares the same security fate. The Audi A5 is listed as a car with five stars Euro NCAP. It shows excellent safety data for adult and child occupants, with a rating of 89 and 87 out of 100, respectively. The entire A5 family takes advantage of these ratings, which remain fixed despite the 2020 restyling since no changes are made to the structure of the vehicle.

The Audi A5 has established itself in the market as a reliable and robust model. The popularity gained over the years has allowed it to accumulate many units sold. A large part of them currently floods the used and second-hand markets. Its percentage of depreciation is around 28,5%, slightly lower than its rivals.

The offer starts at prices close to 7.000 euros for units from the late 2000s with high mileage. Km 0 options are less since dealers do not accumulate units in stock. The A5 is a model for which its buyers choose to customize it. Although we do see units with approximate prices of 45.000 euros, higher in the case of more equipped and performance models.

Rivals of the Audi A5

Few brands have dared, for now, to launch models of this style except for the three usual German premiums. That leaves us with few rivals that the A5 has to stand up to. His most popular and well-known opponents are the BMW Serie 4 and Mercedes C-Class Coupe. All of them have very similar mechanical ranges in addition to different types of bodies, both with two and five doors and convertible. To these models we can add others such as the Lexus RC, although it is not capable of matching the full range of the Germans.

As usual in Audi, the brand tempts us with an attractive launch offer for the market it is targeting. It is a car for which its buyers usually choose not to include access equipment, and in that case the price rises quickly. In the cheapest of cases The Audi A5 has a starting price of 54.690 euros without offers or promotions. That price is adopted for both the Coupé and Sportback body. The most expensive unit is the A5 Cabrio, whose minimum price stands at 62.540 euros. All this without offers or promotions.
