The PSA luxury brand already has a new sedan. The DS 9 It was presented at the beginning of the year 2020. It marked the return of the brand to the format of large sedans since until then its product portfolio only included SUVs. The launch coincides with the 65th anniversary of the arrival of a car that was a true revolution in its time, the DS 19, better known as Tiburón.

How could it be otherwise in DS, 9 bases its bet on different sections. The first the design. A very French touch for a sedan that wants to break with the pre-established. Despite using the same structure, the DS 9 is larger thanks to its longer wheelbase. 4,93 meters long, 1,85 meters wide and 1,46 meters high. With these dimensions we are talking about a model corresponding to the E segment. To these measures we must add a wheelbase of 2,89 meters, and a minimum trunk volume of 510 liters, expandable by folding down the second row of seats.

One of the concerns of DS is the comfort of its passengers. For this, it has provided a active suspension called DS Active Scan Suspension that we can also see in other models such as the DS 7 Crossback. What this system does is monitor the previous state of the road at all times. In this way the camera collects the images, a computer analyzes them and the response is sent to a suspension that is prepared to reduce the impact of possible irregularities.

DS 9 mechanical range

We live in the era of hybridization and electrification. Brands must meet really tough emission targets and therefore pull different electrified solutions to adapt to them. In the case of the DS 9 the range is mostly made up of hybrid mechanics, where you will once again opt for PSA resources.

Trying to be considered a premium category car, the range of engines of the DS 9 offers medium-high power. The most classic version is the PureTech 225. It mounts a 1.598 cc turbocharged four-cylinder petrol block. It develops 225 horsepower at 5.500 revolutions and 300 Nm of torque at 1.900 revolutions.yes It mounts an 8-speed automatic gearbox that sends all the power to the front axle.

The most sustainable solutions come under the umbrella of the surname E-TENSE. This is characterized by equipping a plug-in hybrid scheme. It consists of the previous 1.6 PureTech engine, to which is added an electric motor and a 11,8 kWh capacity battery. Thanks to various configurations, there are two possible formats: 225 and 250 horses with 61 kilometers of electric autonomy. Above them is the DS 9 E-TENSE 360 with double electric motor that develops a power of 360 horsepower, 520 Nm of torque and an electric range of 48 kilometers.

DS 9 Equipment

As a high-flying French sedan worth its salt, the DS 9 is a display of quality and refinement. Its premium category comes not only from the emblem on its front, but also from the quality of its finishes and the technology that crowds inside. Today technology is also measured as a form of luxury, and for that reason the DS saloon has plenty of it.

As usual in the French house, the range of equipment is divided into three finishes: Opera Premiere, Rivoli + and Performance Line +, and several interior environments that modify the finishes as well as the materials. In all of them, the high quality of manufacturing stands out. The style hardly varies between the available finishes, although certain specific touches are included in the sportier level, such as the 19-inch wheels with exclusive design.

As far as equipment is concerned, DS 9 is capable of offering the full range of solutions available from the brand and from the Stellantis Group. That leaves us with outstanding elements such as: full LED headlights, night vision, digital instrument panel, multimedia system with a 12-inch touch panel, 360-degree camera, sunroof and much more. Of course, state-of-the-art safety equipment and numerous driving assistants must also be included.

The DS 9 according to Euro NCAP

Currently in safety tests the factor of driving assistants has a value of special importance. DS comes with a good complement of assistive technologies as standard, but not complete. This fact earns the DS 9 4 out of 5 Euro NCAP safety stars.. The results by sections are as follows: 79 out of 100 in adult passenger protection, 86 out of 100 in child passenger protection, 67 out of 100 in pedestrian vulnerability and 67 out of 100 in driving assistance systems.

Rivals of the DS 9

The DS 9 is a high-flying sedan. We cannot cross it out as a generalist brand because neither for price nor for concept is it like that. The new French luxury saloon has very tough rivals to face, most of them of German origin. The most prominent are the Audi A6, BMW Serie 5, Mercedes E-Class or Jaguar XF. As we have already said, a competition that harbors much more experience than the French. But this plays with the trick of being the absolute novelty.

When it comes to prices, the French luxury sedan makes it very clear that it is trying to attack premium category models. ANDhe starting price of the DS 9 is 64.300 euros, without offers or promotions. That figure corresponds to a model with a Performance Line+ finish and a 250-horsepower E-TENSE engine. At the top of the range we find the DS 9 E-TENSE 360 with Opera Premiere finish. Its starting price is 74.150 euros, without offers or promotions.
