The 500 is an institution in itself. Few cars have so much essence in such a small format. The old Topolino has been for sale for many years, and has deservedly become one of the clear references in the urban segment. But new times demand new solutions. The FIAT 500e is the electrical variant of FIAT 500 conventional. A model that arrives to meet the new mobility and pollution standards.

The 500e is not only the electric version of the famous urban car, it is also the first 100% electric model from FIAT, although a few years ago the Italians already released an electric 500. A limited production unit that anticipated what would end up arriving in the not too distant future. Those from Turin hope that this time the model will be mass-produced, and therefore it will be their first large-volume electric.

The FIAT 500e was presented in 2020 as a 2021 model. Particular design details are applied to it, a new style that will later be applied to the conventional range. It is available in three different bodies: 3-door saloon, 1+XNUMX XNUMX-door and XNUMX-door convertible with retractable canvas roof. They all have the same mechanical configuration.

Technical characteristics of the FIAT 500e

Despite inheriting the name from the 500, the 500e is not based on the same ultra-compact platform as the city car. Being a 100% electric model, FIAT has had to develop an exclusive platform. A special architecture that allows the introduction of the batteries, the motor and the entire attached electrical system. Later it will also be used in other products such as FIAT Panda or various PSA models thanks to the new alliance formed with the French.

Of course the measures of the FIAT They continue to place it perfectly in the urban segment, and few electric vehicles have such reduced measurements. 3,63 meters long, 1,68 meters wide and 1,53 meters high, dimensions shared by all the bodies. These figures represent a slight increase with respect to the gasoline variants, these being just 8 centimeters shorter.

To all these external measures must be added a wheelbase of 2,3 meters long. A greatly reduced battle that requires you to file a cabin approved for a maximum of four passengers in 2+2 configuration. As far as trunk capacity is concerned, the FIAT 500e announces a 185 liter cargo volume, the same figure as the gasoline variants.

Fiat 500e Electric 2020

The 500e is a 100% electric model. It was born with the intention of exclusively offering efficient mechanics, and therefore there is no trace of conventional solutions. The range is divided into two versions where the main difference lies in the size of the battery and the consequent variation in autonomy.

The access unit features a 95 horsepower electric motor and 220 Nm of torque in the front position. It connects to a centrally positioned lithium-ion battery with a real capacity of 21,3 kWh. Presents a Approved autonomy in the WLTP cycle of 180 kilometers with 135 kilometers per hour top speed. It has a maximum recharging capacity of 50 kW.

The most powerful version comes with a 118-horsepower electric block and 220 Nm of torque. It is connected to a lithium-ion battery located under the floor of the passenger compartment with a real capacity of 37,3 kWh. Thanks to her the electric autonomy approved in the WLTP cycle grows to 321 kilometers. Performance also improves with a top speed of 150 km/h and a recharging power of up to 85 kW.

FIAT 500e equipment

FIAT wanted its first electric to satisfy the tastes and needs of the most modern and demanding customers. For that reason the interior features an improved cabin over conventional units. More quality and more equipment. Better chosen materials although it continues to present an extensive use of hard plastics that somewhat reduce the sense of quality perceived by customers.

When it comes to finishes, the FIAT 500e range is staggered at the usual levels of the house. Different finishes that focus mainly on changing the exterior appearance, the interior materials and finishes, and the technological load. The range of finishes of the 500e has the 500, Red and La Prima versions. The first one, the access one, only available for the three-door body.

As far as equipment is concerned, the 500e takes a leap forward compared to its petrol brethren. Presents state-of-the-art technology such as: Full LED headlights, 17-inch wheels, seven-inch digital instrument panel, connectivity for mobile devices, climate control, multimedia system with a 10,25-inch touch panel and a wide range of driving assistants .

FIAT 500e rivals

By size and positioning in segment A, the Fiat 500e has a legion of rivals. However, due to the mechanical concept and technological level, the possibilities are significantly reduced. Despite this, many models have made the same conversion as the Italian, betting directly on 100% electric mobility. Some of those rivals are: Honda and, SEAT Mii Electric, Skoda Citigo iV,  Volkswagen e Up!, Mini Cooper SE, SmartForTwo EQSmart ForFour EQ. All of them are similar in size and performance, with the 500e being one of those that offers the greatest electric autonomy.
