El Ford EcoSport It is one of the global models of the American firm. The first generation of this all-terrain urban car was born in 2003 and was related to the Ford Fusion. The first EcoSport was only sold in the main emerging markets for the brand, such as Brazil, Mexico, India or Venezuela. However, the SUV fashion lived in the old continent caused its landing in our lands.

It would not be until 2013 that the brand decided to globalize the model and bring it to Europe to enter the B-SUV segment.. However, despite being developed on the effective platform of the Ford Fiesta, its design, quality and mechanical range did not allow it to reach a decent level of sales. For this reason, in 2017 it has received a deep restyling that brings it up to date in all the aspects in which it faltered.

With your arrival Ford completes the SUV family, offering at least one model in each major market segment. The EcoSport is positioned as the smallest model, and above it we find the Ford Puma, Ford Kuga, Ford Edge and Ford Explorer. At the moment a renewal has not been proposed, and therefore it is not known what will happen when this generation comes to an end.

Technical characteristics of the Ford EcoSport

As we have already said, the Ford EcoSport is the smallest SUV in the house, and therefore bases its development on the B2E platform designed for B-segment models. It is the same that we can see in other models of the firm, such as the Fiesta, the Puma or even the Ford Transit Courier. It stands out for the transverse position of the engine and the traction, which is always directed to the front train.

One of the best qualities of the EcoSport is its small size, ideal for the segment in which it is located and ideal for urban behavior. External measures lead us to the 4,1 meters long, 1,76 meters wide and 1,65 meters high. To these dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,52 meters. Battle that allows you to offer an approved interior for a maximum of five occupants.

The third row of seats is capable of receiving three passengers, although with a certain narrowness as shoulder space is quite limited. It presents an optimal modularity thanks to a longitudinally adjustable bench. The trunk offers a minimum volume of 334 liters when the rear row is in its rearmost position, and 356 liters when it is furthest forward. The maximum volume is 1.238 liters.

Inside there is enough space for which four occupants travel comfortably. A fifth passenger would not travel very comfortable due to the shape of the rear central bench and the space available in width. Thanks to the profound restyling that the EcoSport has undergone, the quality of its interior has been increased as well as the technological equipment that it can include.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Ford EcoSport

The Ford EcoSport is presupposed for a primarily urban life, and therefore its engine range is short on power. However, these same engines allow to achieve low consumption and quite decent performance. The mechanical portfolio is made up exclusively of gasoline blocks. There are no diesel or electrified units, something that penalizes it with respect to more recent models that can include them.

The same engine is used in all versions, changing only the settings to offer more power. The block in question is a 998 cubic centimeter turbocharged three-cylinder. It offers three power ranges: 100, 125 and 140 horsepower, with 170, 170 and 180 Nm of torque., respectively. As you can see, they are low performance levels, but sufficient for the general concept of the car.

All units mount a six-speed manual transmission, with no option to change any. Without exception, all mechanical variants send power to the front axle without being able to mount an all-wheel drive scheme or a torque management program. Consumption ranges between 5,9 and 6 liters per 100 kilometers traveled. High data for the little power available.

Ford EcoSport equipment

From doors to inside the Ford EcoSport is shown as a typical model of the B-SUV segment. In it we cannot highlight the quality of finishes. Excessive use of hard plastics. A material that significantly reduces the feeling of quality perceived by users. In the higher trim levels it is allowed to include higher quality details, but in general it does not reach some better positioned rivals.

As usual in the American house, the equipment offer is structured on different levels, and may include more or fewer systems and a more particular configuration for each client. From lowest to highest price and endowment we find: Trend, Titanium, ST-Line and Active, the latter has been the most recent to enter the line, and gives the little EcoSport a much more campy and daring appearance.

In general, its equipment is correct but not outstanding. The base load is somewhat poor, but it can have interesting elements such as: 17-inch wheels, leather upholstery, HD headlights, connectivity for mobile devices, SYNC3 multimedia system with 8-inch touch screen, navigator and a very extensive team of driving assistants and security elements.

Ford EcoSport according to Euro NCAP

The Ford EcoSport that was subjected to the demanding crash tests of Euro NCAP was the one for the year 2013. The score achieved by the urban all-road was 4 stars, remaining as follows. 93% protection for adult occupants, 77% protection for infants, 58% protection for pedestrians and 55% in systems and driving aids. This EcoSport was prior to the restyling it underwent, however, the changes that the American SUV has received have only been cosmetic and equipment, so the score in the Euro NCAP tests remains at 4 stars.

The Ford EcoSport of Km 0 and second hand

The Ford EcoSport that we know in Europe has been on the market since 2013. However, despite having correct sales figures, it has never appeared on the best-seller lists. Despite finding a good number of units available in secondary sales channels, its low popularity has ended up affecting the depreciation value, which stands at 32%, a high figure considering that in its segment it is rare to exceed 30%.

If we take a look at the second-hand market we see that we have several hundred options within our reach. Many of them correspond to the version prior to the restyling of the end of 2017. LThe prices start from amounts close to 8.000 euros for low-power gasoline models with more than 130 thousand kilometers. The Km 0 channel also has interesting offers, some of them with prices well below those referred to in new models.

The B-SUV segment is very important in the brands and in the European market. Such has been the evolution of these models that today they have managed to postulate themselves as a real alternative to superior models. The rivalry is very high, and the EcoSport has to face illustrious names such as: Renault Captur, SEAT Arona, Citroen C3 Aircross, Skoda Kamiq, Peugeot 2008, Nissan Juke, FIAT 500X, Opel Mokka, Hyundai Kona, KIA Sonic, and many more. The American stands out for his good behavior, although he penalizes in price and qualities.

When talking about EcoSport rates, it should be noted that it is the cheapest of the SUVs in the house, although its cost is high for its segment. The starting price of the Ford EcoSport is 27.190 euros, without offers or promotions. This value corresponds to a unit with ST-Line finish and 1.0-horsepower 120 EcoBoost mechanics with manual transmission. The most expensive of all is the EcoSport Active with a 1.0 horsepower 125 EcoBoost engine with a six-speed manual transmission. Its starting price is 27.658 euros, without offers or promotions.
