In 2018, Ford noticed the transformation of his doe. With the explosion of SUV fashion, the oval brand announced the elimination of all its sedans in the United States, including the Ford Focus. For the old continent there are other plans, although it is clear that the sales axis is going to be based on a renewed SUV range where the Ford Explorer is positioned as the new flagship.

The Explorer has a long and storied history behind it. Although in our market it is a rare model to see, across the Atlantic reaches a total of six generations. In Spain we only knew the second in an almost testimonial way, and since then almost 25 years have passed since the model left our borders to continue evolving and become the model it is today.

The latest generation has arrived this 2020, a very important year for the oval firm with the introduction of new models such as the Ford Puma and the renovation of other important ones. Officially presented in 2019, the commercial stage of the Explorer starts in the second half of 2020. The American arrives, with its large dimensions, to try to conquer a market share that subtracts from popular generalist European brands.

Technical characteristics of the Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer is an SUV, and a big one. Having left his brand colleagues behind the Ford Kuga and Ford Edge, the Explorer is anchored in the highest part of the range, becoming the new flagship of the firm in the old continent. For this new generation launches a platform on which to settle, being lighter and capable of sending the power of the engine to the rear wheels or through an all-wheel drive scheme.

The Explorer has three passenger lines, 2 – 3- 2. That gives it a cabin for a maximum of seven passengers in its 3,02-meter battle. To that measure we must add generous exterior dimensions. 5,05 meters long, 2 meters wide and 1,78 meters high. To give us an idea, it is almost half a meter longer than the Kuga, the brand's compact SUV.

Despite its large proportions, the Explorer's trunk is reduced by the presence of the battery pack of its plug-in hybrid scheme. The minimum volume is 240 liters with all three rows of seats unfolded. The normal volume is 635 litres, when the last row of seats is folded under the boot floor. The middle row is individually adjustable longitudinally, being able to subtract or increase load capacity according to needs.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Ford Explorer

In order to meet the new European emissions regulations, the Ford Explorer lands on the old continent with only one mechanic possible. A high-performance plug-in hybrid scheme which immediately directs him against almighty enemies who are not going to make things easy for him. In the future, the arrival of more mechanical versions is not ruled out, but at the moment this is the only one available.

The set is made up of a vee six-cylinder gasoline engine turbocharged and 2.956 cubic centimeters. By itself, the V6 engine provides almost all the power of the Explorer, 349 horses. Associated with this traditional mechanics is a 73 kW front electric motor, And a lithium ion battery liquid cooled with 13,1 kWh capacity. The set homologates a maximum power of 457 horsepower and 825 Nm of torque.

Despite the high weight of the Ford Explorer, 2.518 kilograms, the benefits are interesting. From 0 to 100 km/h in 6,03 seconds and a top speed of 230 km/h. All this with a 100% electric autonomy of 42 kilometers, an approved combined consumption of 3,1 liters per 100 kilometers, and emissions of 71 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Thanks to this structure, the large SUV is able to homologate the DGT ZERO label.

Ford Explorer Equipment

With the new batch of oval brand products, quality and equipment load have increased. Ford wants to position itself as one of the best general brands and it is achieving it based on a notable evolution in the composition of interiors. The cabin of the Explorer stands out for its good execution, good materials and good finishes.

It is the flagship of the house in the old continent. The brand has bet everything on the SUV market, and the Explorer is the largest and most luxurious of the firm. The range is distributed in two different finishes: ST Line and Platinum. Thanks to it, it has a more attractive exterior appearance and a higher level of equipment. In the not too distant future, more units should appear within the range, such as the Titanium finish and the Vignale finish.

As far as pure equipment is concerned, it is worth noting the inclusion of all the advances and systems that the brand is capable of including. Also noteworthy is the presence of digital instrument panel with 12,3-inch screen, tri-zone climate control, power front seats, sunroof, LED headlights, SYNC3 multimedia system with 10,1-inch touch screen, Bang & Olufsen sound system and much more. Of course also a large team of driving aids and assistants.

The Ford Explorer of Km 0 and second hand

Given the history of the Ford Explorer in the Spanish market, the units for sale in the used and second-hand channels are focused exclusively on second generation models. Units from 1996 to 2001 with high mileage but low resale price. In the best of cases, the offers start below 1.000 euros. As for the 0 km channel, the offer is practically non-existent due to the low demand for units. The Ford Explorer is expected to disappear from the European division roster at the end of 2023. Its successor will be a 100% electric model.

Ford Explorer rivals

Although the most popular markets in the SUV segment are B and C, the Explorer is aimed at the largest segment of all, with a measurement greater than five meters. That means that the number of sales is lower, but not so some rivals that accumulate more experience and weight in the market. The direct opponents of the Explorer are: Volkswagen Touareg, Range Rover Sport, Listen Q7, Volvo XC90, BMW X5 o Mercedes GLE. All of them are on a higher plane in price with the exception of the VW, which without a doubt is postulated as the clearest enemy of the American.
