It is increasingly difficult to find a minivan within the product portfolio of a brand. SUVs have changed everything, and models as familiar as the Ford SMAX have fallen into oblivion. Although it is still for sale, rivals of this versatile and functional model are not expected.

A sad goodbye for a minivan that has been on sale since 2006. It was then Ford presented it as an alternative to the then popular family D-segment, even becoming awarded as the car of the year in Europe in 2007. But a lot has changed since then, and few have changed for the S-MAX.

In 2015, the second generation was launched on the market, presented a year earlier at the Paris Motor Show.. Despite its stylized line and its great capacity, it has not been able to reap the successes of the first edition. Although somewhat late, at the end of 2021 the S-Max undergoes a small update. A commercial restyling that introduces important new features, mainly at a mechanical level.

Technical characteristics of the Ford S-MAX

It's funny to think that the Ford S-MAX is not the only model of the house in the segment D of the minivans. We can also find the Ford Galaxy, although with slightly higher measurements despite the fact that the two share the platform on which they rest, which in this case is the same one used by the Ford Mondeo, the so-called CD4 architecture, which also uses the Ford Edge.

As it is a multidisciplinary and scalable platform, the measures are adjusted to the needs of the model. In this case the S-MAX leaves us with some generous dimensions: 4,8 meters long, 1,92 meters wide and 1,65 meters high. To these exterior dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,85 meters. A wheelbase big enough to show an interior space that seats five or seven passengers.

The two additional seats, optional, are hidden under the boot floor. A large capacity trunk that shows different volumes. In its five-seater configuration the Ford S-MAX has a minimum trunk of 630 liters since all the units come standard with the two additional seats. With all the seats unfolded, the volume is practically reduced to zero.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Ford S-MAX

Despite its longevity, the Ford S-MAX is capable of meeting the latest European emissions and pollution regulations. Given the business update of the end of 2021, Ford's minivan now has only hybrid versions with which to wear the ECO label of the DGT. In this way he says goodbye to all conventional thermal units, which completely disappear from the range. We are talking about a conventional hybrid, not a PHEV.

It consists of a four-cylinder gasoline engine and 2.488 cubic centimeters. It is associated with a front electric motor that is powered by a 1,1 kWh capacity battery. It develops a maximum power of 190 horsepower with an approximate electric range of a couple of kilometers. The management is derived from an automatic transmission with a continuous variator that sends all the power to the front axle.

Inside the doors the Ford S-MAX offers a pleasant space to be. Despite being a car designed for families with hard use, the quality of the finishes has been very careful. Surfaces with soft materials that are pleasant to the touch, such as leather, are the general trend. This increases the feeling of comfort for all occupants.

As is customary at Ford, the range of finishes is distributed at different levels. From lowest to highest endowment and from lowest to highest price we find: Trend, Titanium, ST-Line and Vignale. In each of them the equipment load increases, as well as some materials or adjustments are improved. The design also changes, going from a more sober look in the first levels to a more sporty or elegant one in the last two.

Another reason for the 2021 update was the increase in technology. Despite its advanced age, the S-MAX offers modern systems. Elements such as: LED headlights, keyless entry and start, partially digital instrumentation, SYNC3 multimedia system with touch panel and connectivity for mobile devices, browser, climate control, heated seats and several driving assistants stand out.

On the occasion of the launch of its second generation back in 2015, the safety evaluation body Euro NCAP tested the conditions of the S-MAX. After the demanding tests, it was awarded the highest score, five stars.. The results yielded the following data. 87% protection for adult and child passengers, 79% protection for pedestrians in the event of being run over and 71% effectiveness in the operation of driving assistants.

The Ford S-MAX is one of the best large minivans in terms of dynamic behavior, and for this reason it is one of the favorites by car rental companies. To these conditions we must add a well-deserved reputation for reliability and resistance. It is easy to check old models in good condition. Thanks to all of it offers an average depreciation of 30%, something that is in tune with the rest of the rivals in its segment.

If we take a look at secondary sales channels, we see that the most affordable units are on sale for amounts close to 3.500 euros. This value refers to first generation models with more than 400 thousand kilometers accumulated. In the 0 km market there are hardly any units available since dealers do not accumulate stock given the low demand for the product. The model disappears from the market at the end of 2022.

It is increasingly difficult to find models in the minivan segment. Almost all brands have chosen to prop up the larger MPV market of all with superior products to the S-MAX, as is the case of the Ford Tourneo Custom. Despite this, there is still a small redoubt of units belonging to segment D that are on their way to the end of their commercial stage. The toughest rivals of the American are: Seat Alhambra, Volkswagen Sharan, Renault Espace y Citroen Gran C4 Spacetourer. All of them have the same maximum capacity of seven seats and similar measurements.

When it comes to talking about prices, it must be recognized that the S-MAX is not the cheapest alternative that we can find, something that does not help improve its sales figures either. The starting price of the Ford S-MAX is 40.838 euros, without offers or promotions. That value corresponds to a hybrid unit with a Trend series finish. The most expensive of all is the S-MAX with Vignale finish, in which case the minimum price is set at 50.613 euros, without offers or promotions.
