Minivans have always been the most familiar branch of all. However, the passage of time has not treated this type of vehicle well, despite its comfort and practicality. Today the largest versions remain standing, those that are capable of holding up to nine passengers inside, as is the case of the Hyundai H-1 Travel, one of the most forgotten options in the segment.

And it will not be because the large minivan does not accumulate years on the market. The first generation lands in Europe in 1997, although in other markets it sported particular denominations such as Hyundai Starex. It derives directly from an industrial vehicle, having a twin version called H-1 Cargo. We are currently dealing with the second of the generations, which currently dates from 2007.

In 2019, and given the advanced age of the model, the Hyundai H-1 Travel undergoes a major facelift, the second of the same generation. The changes are significant at all levels, from the aesthetic to the functional, through safety and equipment. From bottom to top undergoes great changes. In 2022 the H-1 disappears from the brand's range, giving up its place to the Hyundai staria.

Technical characteristics of the Hyundai H-1

It is impossible to hide that the Hyundai H-1 Travel derives from an industrial vehicle, as we have said. But it receives enough changes to become a multipurpose and family vehicle. It has its own large-scale architecture with a long wheelbase, and is specially adapted to revised mechanics.

It is only available in one body, with a 3,2 meter wheelbase chassis. This allows you to offer an interior space with three rows of seats and up to eight passengers in a 2-3-3 arrangement. With the exception of other models that we see on the market, the three rows of seats, fixed, leave a considerable cargo space, with a minimum of 851 liters.

Everything about the Hyundai H-1 is big, including its unique size. 5,15 meters long, 1,92 meters wide and 1,92 meters high. We can add other data of interest such as the 75-litre tank capacity or the 2.260-kilogram weight on the scale. An excessive weight that is a burden when talking about dynamic capabilities.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Hyundai H-1

The first generation of the H-1 had a 4 × 4 variant with a modified chassis and higher height. This all-wheel drive version disappeared in the second generation, and to this day it is still not present. This means that all versions mount a drive system to the front axle.

The mechanical range is made up of a diesel engine with two different powers. The block is the same in both cases. A turbocharged engine Hyundai with four cylinders and 2.147 cubic centimeters. It can be associated with a six-speed manual transmission or an automatic five-speed torque converter type. This last choice always entails the association with the most powerful variant.

As we have said, there are two power levels present. On the one hand, the Hyundai H-1 Travel 136 horsepower with manual transmissionAnd secondly, the H-1 Travel 170 horsepower with automatic transmission. In addition to the difference in performance, consumption varies. 8,9 liters on average in the WLTP cycle for the access version and 10,1 liters per 100 kilometers for the most powerful variant. Both comply with Euro 6 regulations.

Equipment of the Hyundai H-1

Although over time the Hyundai H-1 Travel has improved its interior presence, it continues to show itself as an inferior model if we take into account its closest rivals. Hard plastic metals abound, although certain areas are covered by fabrics that slightly improve the sense of perceived quality.

It is only available with one trim level, the Techn finish.or, one of the highest of the range of Hyundai. With it is associated a specific exterior style with 16-inch wheels and a color palette with six different shades where the presence of yellow stands out. For the interior, two types of upholstery are offered, one gray and the other beige. Cloth in both cases.

As far as equipment is concerned, the 2019 update introduced considerable improvements, although he continues to attribute an age problem. In the equipment, it is worth mentioning the presence of: halogen headlights, electrically folding rear-view mirrors, rear camera and sensors, light sensor, browser and multimedia system with a seven-inch touch screen with connectivity through USB and auxiliary sockets.

The Hyundai H-1 according to Euro NCAP

On the occasion of the launch of the second generation of the Hyundai H-1, Euro NCAP subjected the large Korean minivan to its tests. After the crash tests, the results gave a three-star safety rating., out of five possible. The best grade was obtained in child passenger protection, with a score of 75 out of 100. Next, protection for adult passengers, 55 out of 100, and driving assistants, 43 out of 34. Finally, pedestrian protection obtained the lowest score, with a value of 100 out of XNUMX.

The Hyundai H-1 of Km 0 and second hand

Throughout its commercial life, the Hyundai H-1 has passed with more pain than glory. Sales have always been residual, and this has meant that second-hand channels do not have many units for sale. The percentage of depreciation is high, around 40%, a much higher percentage than that of its closest rivals.

The oldest units, from the late 90s, are the cheapest of all with a starting price of around 1.500 euros. In his favor, he has the fame of durability and resistance that have always accompanied him. Of course the Km 0 market does not exist in our country. Dealers do not accumulate stock in the absence of orders, so it is impossible for us to evaluate it.

Hyundai H-1 rivals

Although at the beginning we have said that the minivan segment is in full recession, the only segment of it that supports the step is the largest format. In recent years, various models have emerged that are clearly positioned as Hyundai H-1 Travel rivals. Some clear examples are: Peugeot Traveler, Citroen SpaceTourer, Volkswagen Multivan, Mercedes V Class, Toyota proace y Ford Tourneo Custom. Among all of them, the Korean version stands out for its contained price and its large trunk.
