Although the fame and sales of the European B-segment have slowed down in the face of the advance of the B-SUVs, the reality is that its market is still one of the most important on a continental level. The Hyundai i20 It is the model of the Korean firm that tries to carve out a niche for itself among the great illustrious names, where none is going to make things easy for it.

Hyundai introduced the first generation of the i20 back in 2008. It immediately positioned itself as the natural successor to the Hyundai Getz. A utility of reasonable price without great luxuries, but practical. In a few years the second generation arrives, the Hyundai i20 2014. New style, better qualities, more equipment and all this while maintaining an attractive and low price.

With the evolutionary leap given by all the new models of the Korean company, in 2020 the latest Hyundai i20 is released. It does not share a single element with its predecessor, and it advances considerably in important sections such as design, technology, efficiency and safety. Thanks to all the improvements introduced Hyundai hopes to conquer a greater number of customers.

Technical characteristics of the Hyundai i20

Nothing from the old i20 is carried over to the new one. When creating the third generation, the engineers have opted for the development of a completely new platform. A structure shared with the KIA Rio which gives you possible access to more efficient and versatile mechanical variants, including partially electrified engines.

Despite the change in the chassis, the measures of the Hyundai i20 remain perfect for the utility segment. 4.04 meters long, 1,75 meters wide and 1,45 meters high. To these levels we must add a wheelbase of 2,58 meters long. Gains are measured in a few centimeters here and there.

However, the use of space is better. With capacity for five occupants, passengers in the rear row can enjoy more space. The most benefited space is the trunk. The i20 sports a minimum boot volume of 352 liters, that is, 25 liters more than in the past. When folding down the second row of seats, the volume grows above 1.000 liters.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Hyundai i20

The models belonging to the B segment have a range of low power engines. The performance figures are not the most important value of these units, and that includes the Hyundai i20. Its range is made up entirely of gasoline engines that offer four different power levels. All of them exclusively send the power to the front axle.

The range starts with the 1.2 MPi. A three-cylinder atmospheric block that develops 84 horsepower. Below is the 1.0 T-GDi engine. It shows a three-cylinder configuration with a displacement liter and turbo. Shows two power levels; 100 and 120 horses. As standard, this block is associated with a six-speed manual gearbox, and can optionally be equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

New to the range is the introduction of partially electrified systems. An auxiliary electrical system of 48 volts can accompany the two versions of the block 1.0 T-GDI, which approve the ECO label of the DGT. The most powerful unit of the family is the i20 N with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and 1.591 cc. It develops 204 horsepower and 275 Nm of torque.. It uses a six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive.

Equipment of the Hyundai i20

Hyundai i20 2020 inside

Historically, segment B has always been one of the most affected in terms of quality and equipment. Being small and accessible cars, the luxuries and comforts did not count for the manufacturers. The Hyundai i20 sports a completely renewed interior that gives an important step forward in terms of qualities and equipment, with five levels of finishes: Essence, Klass, Tecno, N Line and Stylux.

Soft surfaces and well-chosen materials are mixed with careful plastics that, in general, provide a correct sense of quality. As usual, the range of equipment is divided into several levels. These can not only add a greater or lesser technological load, they also slightly modify the external appearance. At the moment Hyundai has not communicated anything about possible secondary bodies, so the continuity of the Hyundai i20 Active is not known.

As far as pure and hard equipment is concerned, the i20 sports one of the most advanced interiors in the B-segment. Among its many elements, it is worth highlighting the presence of: digital instrument panel with a 10,25-inch screen, multimedia system with a touch screen of up to 10,25 inches, navigator, keyless entry and start, climate control, heated front seats, connectivity for mobile devices, induction charger and much more. We must also add a complete safety equipment and driving aids.

The Hyundai i20 of Km 0 and second hand

Throughout its 12 years for sale in our country, the i20 has been very popular with buyers. Although its sales figures are not spectacular, it has earned a reputation for durability and, above all, savings. It is a cheap car to buy and cheap to maintain. This encourages the secondary markets, where we find a large number of models for sale, where we see that the depreciation percentage is around 34%, somewhat higher than its most direct rivals.

If we take a look at the used and second-hand market, we see that the most affordable units belong to the first generation of the Hyundai i20. Its price starts in quantities close to 2.500 euros for 2010 models with more than 150 thousand accumulated kilometers. The Km 0 market is more devoid of units due to the immediate generational change, which is a good time for those looking for good deals on models from the previous edition.
