The family of Kia Niro It is considered one of the most versatile families on the market. In a compact SUV format, the Korean model is capable of accumulating different mechanical alternatives, all of them marked by some degree of electrification. From conventional hybrid units to plug-in hybrids, going through the KIA e Niro, the 100% electric unit.

The first time we met the e-Niro was back in 2019, three years after the original launch of the 2016 KIA Nitro. With a totally electric format, it has always been postulated as one of the best alternatives within the category, being in turn one of the most popular models due to its excellent price-product ratio. In 2022 a second generation comes to light, much changed and improved in every ways.

Technical characteristics of the KIA e-Niro

KIA has introduced the second generation of the Niro with a long list of new features, although most of them focus on aesthetics and technology. Under this new and different bodywork, a platform derived from the previous model is used.. A structure capable of housing different mechanical schemes, in this case 100% electrical with an improved scheme.

The fact of not changing major aspects of the platform means that its dimensions barely vary from the past, just five extra centimeters in length. With a compact format, the e-Niro reaches 4,42 meters long, 1,82 meters wide and 1,57 meters high with a wheelbase of 2,72 meters. All this translates into an interior space valid for five passengers.

Three of them are installed in a better used second row of seats with optimal space, where even tall passengers can travel comfortably. In terms of load capacity, since the batteries are installed between the axles, the KIA e-Niro sports a trunk of 475 liters of minimum capacity, the highest figure in the whole family. Its maximum reaches 1.392 liters when folding down the second row of seats.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the KIA e-Niro

The e-Niro is the most efficient model in the entire range. Leaving aside any thermal engine, the mechanical offer focuses exclusively on 100% electric versions. Given the recent release, only a front-wheel drive unit is available, which has a scheme derived from the previous model. In the future, the introduction of an access variant with less autonomy is expected.

The main axis is lithium-ion battery with 64,8 kWh capacity. This battery is responsible for supplying energy to a front electric motor with 204 horsepower and 255 Nm of torque which works at a voltage of 358 volts. Officially the electric range of the KIA e-Niro is 463 kilometers with an average consumption of 15,9 kWh for every 100 kilometers travelled.

Equipment of the KIA e-Niro

The Niro, like KIA, has always stood out for a very balanced technological offer. The Korean brand is committed to offering a lot in a very changed format. If we take the previous model as a reference, the e-Niro shows a great leap in quality and equipment. The presentation is very striking thanks to large digital panels that take almost all the limelight.

With a slight improvement in materials and finishes, the e-Niro proves to be one of the better presented generalists. As usual in the house, KIA offers different levels of equipment: Concept, Drive and Emotion. The main differences between them lie in technology, although there are also changes applied at the level of exterior design and interior finish.

As far as equipment is concerned, the KIA e-Niro improves its endowment thanks to the sum of modern technologies. Within the list of elements, the following stand out: Full LED headlights, digital instrumentation, multimedia system with a panel of up to 10,25 inches, browser, Head-Up Display, wireless connectivity, parking camera and a complete deployment of security and security assistants .

Rivals of the KIA e-Niro

Given the particular structure of the Niro family, not many models are capable of standing up to that wide range of mechanics.. Focusing on the exclusively electric model, the most similar rivals that we can find on the market are the Peugeot e-2008, Opel Mokka, MG ZEEV or Renault Megane E-TECH, among others. All of them electric models with similar characteristics in size and price.
