McLaren structures its range of models based on the level of power it is capable of delivering. The Super Series branch starts with the McLaren 720S. A model that we met in 2017 and that from the beginning has been postulated as one of the most extreme supercars on the market. Being the natural successor to the 650S.

It was Presented at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, and immediately guessed the new design philosophy of the Woking. His image has been worked on so that he is not only a high-beauty sports car, but also one of effective performance. Without the presence of large fixed aerodynamic appendages, the entire bodywork actively works to direct the air to your liking.

In 2019, the long-awaited convertible variant, the McLaren 720S Spider, hit the market. The two models are access to the Super Series range, where the presence of the McLaren 765LT is also worth mentioning. All three employ many components, including platform and mechanics, with performance varying from one to another.

Technical characteristics of the McLaren 720S

High performance and high performance require a very demanding set-up that begins with the preparation of an excellent base. The McLaren 720S employs a monocoque chassis made of carbon fiber low weight and high rigidity. Previously used in the McLaren P1, the structure has a roof for the first time, making the whole safer and more rigid.

Despite their appearance, the 720S and 720S Spider enjoy compact dimensions. 4,54 meters long, 2,16 meters wide and 1,2 meters high. To this we must add a wheelbase of 2,67 meters that places the two occupants who can be accommodated inside right in the middle. The total weight of the set reaches 1.494 kilograms for the coupé and 1.543 kilograms for the convertible.

In the case of the 720S Spider, the retractable roof is hidden in a small space just behind the seats, an operation that can be done in less than 15 seconds from start to finish. When it comes to capacity, the 720S features two storage spaces, one with 220 liters capacity and another with 150 liters. The latter is located in the nose, because we must not forget that the engine is installed in the rear central part.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the McLaren 720S

The soul of the 720S and of any McLaren is the engine. Unlike the Sport Series range, formed, among others, by the McLaren 540C y McLaren 570S, the Super Series family employs an engine of greater size and performance. A single mechanical assembly that dispenses with any type of hybridization, thus avoiding the current trend in the market.

It is a gasoline block made of aluminum with eight cylinders in vee and 3.994 cubic centimeters with four valves per cylinder. It mounts a double overhead camshaft per cylinder head and is associated with a double turbo system that increases performance. Coupled to the engine is a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox that sends all the power to the rear axle.

The result of such a mechanical piece are 720 horsepower at 7.250 revolutions and 770 Nm of maximum torque at 5.550 revolutions. Such data allows you to have superior performance. From 0 to 100 km/h in 2,9 seconds, from 0 to 200 km/h in 7,8 seconds and a top speed of 341 km/h. All this with a combined consumption approved in the WLTP cycle of 12,1 liters per 100 kilometers travelled.

Equipment of the McLaren 720S

True to the philosophy of less is more, the cabin of the McLaren 720S is devoid of any element not necessary in the performance of speed. The English have created an interior with a clear sporty essence and sporty tints such as the use of materials such as carbon fiber or Alcantara. Minimalism goes to extremes even in technology where no driving aids are available.

As usual, the 720S does not have a stepped structure of finishes. The external appearance is the same in all the units, but it is allows a high degree of customization in a large number of parts and components such as paint, tires or upholstery. Each element is sensitive to be altered to the particular tastes of each client, fixing this the final appearance of the vehicle.

As far as technology is concerned, the vast majority of systems focus on improving the driving experience. Noteworthy is the presence of two digital panels, one in the instrument panel and the other performing the functions of the multimedia system. The other part of the list of options is intended to improve performance and driving, such as carbon-ceramic brakes, high-performance exhausts or carbon fiber appendages.

McLaren 720S rivals

The performance and feel of the McLaren 720S and 720S Spider are hard to match, but not impossible. In the market we find models that deal directly with English. There are hardly a handful of units that can be mentioned, and all of them come from sports luxury firms. Some examples are: Ferrari 488, Lamborghini Aventador, Porsche RS 911 GT2 o Aston Martin DB11 Superleggera. All of them are rivals for performance, power and price, with the Woking one being one of the most expensive of all.
