When we talk about McLaren We are talking about an iconic brand and one of the most successful Formula 1 teams in the world. Founded by Bruce McLaren in 1963, the English brand has some of the most spectacular and legendary sports cars in the world to its credit. The McLaren 765LT it's one of its latest gems, a beautiful-looking supercar that's been designed with one purpose in mind: racing.

The 2020 Geneva Motor Show had to be the stage where McLaren would have presented the 765LT to the eyes of the world. However, as we all know, such a ceremony has never taken place. But it's the same. The 765LT is the latest model to join the successful Super Series family., where he shares campus with his brother McLaren 720S.

Like other models before him, the 765 arrives accompanied by the acronym LT, short for Long Tail, “Cola Larga” in Spanish. McLaren uses this name for those special models, mainly characterized by having more power and less weight than the rest of the range. That is, it is used in models with a clear sports focus.

Technical characteristics of the McLaren 765LT

Being a model with a strong sporting accent, its development has involved the most demanding use of resources. For this occasion, use a monocoque chassis made of carbon fiber that McLaren calls MonoCage II. All this is covered with a body of carbon fiber panels that reduce weight significantly, 80 kilograms less than the 720S.

And all this despite being slightly superior to his brother. The Long Tail surname implies that the McLaren 765LT has the largest dimensions in the Super Series range. 4,6 meters long, 2,16 meters wide and 1,16 meters high. To these dimensions must be added a wheelbase that limits its habitability to a maximum of two passengers. In this case, the model completely dispenses with load capacity so as not to give up in the effort to stay as light as possible.

And since we are talking about lightness, weight is one of the main weapons of the 765LT, on the scale it marks 1.339 kilograms in running order. To all this we must add a very worked aerodynamics. Active aerodynamics that are "hidden" throughout the bodywork and that ends in a large mobile rear spoiler that, in addition to creating a rear aerodynamic thrust, also acts as a brake when the driver depresses the pedal fully.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the McLaren 765LT

When the weight is reduced significantly it is not necessary to increase the power, but McLaren has considered that raising the engine performance a bit would not hurt. The mechanical range is made up of a single driving scheme, a single engine and a single transmission without the possibility of change. In this case, too, any type of hybridization is dispensed with.

The McLaren 765LT mounts an aluminum block with eight cylinders in vee and 3.994 cubic centimeters of displacement. Equip a double camshaft on each engine bank, a double turbocharger and a total of 32 valves, four per cylinder. This great engine is coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that sends all the power of the engine exclusively to the rear axle.

After the power increase, the 765LT reaches 765 horsepower at 7.500 rpm with a maximum torque of 800 Nm at 5.500 rpm. Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires catapult the 765LT to a top speed of 330 kilometers per hour. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2,8 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in just 7,2 seconds.

Equipment of the McLaren 765LT

In case its image and its benefits do not make it sufficiently clear what the McLaren 765LT aspires to, its interior will get you out of any doubt. The interior is designed as a cockpit typical of a racing car. It uses competition materials such as carbon fiber or Alcantara. Both compounds used in racing buckets that perfectly fit the driver and co-driver.

As such, the 765LT does not feature a typical equipment scheme. There are no different levels. The offer includes all possible equipment from the start, and it is the customer who decides how to finish the look and configuration of their supercar. The limit is set by the budget and the imagination. Such is the degree of customization that is allowed, that it is difficult for two identical units to come off the assembly line.

As far as equipment is concerned, McLaren has reduced some of the equipment to reduce weight. That is why, as far as technology and systems are concerned, the 765LT is not the best-equipped sports car on the market. It dispenses with everything that is not necessary, and most of the systems are centralized in an eight-inch screen in a central position. It is also lacking in many comfort features, and any assistive or driving aid technology.

Rivals of the McLaren 765LT

It is difficult to find a model on the market that can match the capabilities of the McLaren 765LT. Such levels of sportsmanship are within the reach of very few models in the world. If we take a look at his rivals we can mention some like the Ferrari 812 Superfast, or the Lamborghini Aventador. Both present a different approach to the English, because instead of a V8 biturbo both enjoy a V12 engine. But yes, due to power and performance, the three are natural enemies, without forgetting the high cost of each of the units.

McLaren 765LT Price

If you are thinking of going through your McLaren dealer to ask about the price of the 765LT, you should know that the cost of getting their services is high. At the moment it is only available in some markets, such as the American one. In the United States the starting price of the McLaren 765LT is 385.000 dollarss, which in exchange comes to approximately 325.000 euros. It is a slightly higher cost than a 720S, although it must also be taken into account that the Long Tail dispenses with many elements of equipment, but in turn gains a lot of performance.
