Mercedes It has always been shown as an avid manufacturer of sedans. Among its ranks it has classic models that are already part of the history of the motor world. The Mercedes C-Class It is the offering of the German brand to the segment of medium sedans. A model that is situated halfway between the Mercedes CLA and Mercedes E-Class.

The personal history of the C-Class begins in the early 90s. Mercedes was looking for a model to succeed the successful 190, and that's when the first of its generations emerged. It was the year 1993 when the C-Class W202 came onto the scene. A model that borrowed many of the concepts of his older brothers but presented on a smaller scale.

Today the Mercedes C-Class reaches the fourth of its generations. The last one presented in 2014 and slightly updated in 2018. Since then it has remained unchanged, although the house engineers are already working on the fifth generation that should make an appearance at the end of 2021.

Technical characteristics of the Mercedes C-Class

Mercedes C-Class sheet

Underneath the elegant and sporty figure of the C-Class hides the Mercedes MRA modular platform. It is characterized by being made of light materials that at the same time generate high rigidity. As usual, the model range features various bodies, from the classic sedan format to a family version called Estate or the attractive C-Class Cabrio and C-Class Coupé.

Such a diversity of formats is exhibited in different exterior dimensions. The sedan, the coupé and the cabriolet are very similar: 4,69 meters long, 1,81 meters wide and between 1,4 and 1,44 meters high. For its part, the Class C Estate presents the most generous measures, staying at 4,7 meters long, 1,81 meters wide and 1,46 meters high. Where there is no variation is in the wheelbase, all being limited to 2,84 meters of wheelbase. That measurement is adapted depending on the circumstances, going from a five-seater family to a four-seater coupe or cabriolet.

As far as cargo volumes are concerned, the most limited is the Class C Cabrio with 360 litres, followed by the Class C Coupé with 380 litres, then it is the turn of the four-door sedan and its 455-litre minimum capacity. As expected, the most capable of all is the C-Class Estate, which has a minimum capacity of 460 liters and a maximum capacity of 1.480 liters.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Mercedes C-Class

Mercedes C-Class sheet

When it comes to driving the Mercedes C-Class, a wide range of mechanical possibilities has been included. For The Class C Coupé and Cabrio the range is somewhat shorter: five gasoline versions and two diesel. For its part, the C-Class saloon and the C-Class Estate offer six petrol versions, three diesel and two plug-in hybrids. The latter can have a gasoline engine, C 300 e, or a diesel block, C 300 de. Both are plug-in, certify the DGT ZERO label, and have 56 and 58 kilometers of electric autonomy, respectively.

As for the branch of gasoline engines, the offer starts with the C 180 for the saloon and the Estate and with the C 200 for the C-Class Coupé and Cabrio. It is the same engine, but in one case it offers 156 and in the other 184 horses. Where there is no difference is at the top of the range, which is always signed by the name AMG C 63 S. It delivers 510 horses, all of them sent to the rear axle through a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

The division of diesel engines is more contained in power. The offer starts with the C 200 d of 160 horses. If we talk about the non-family versions, that is, coupé and cabriolet, the diesel range starts with the 194 horsepower of the C 220 d. The top of the range in both cases is signed by the variant C 300 d with 245 horses. All mechanics come standard with a nine-speed automatic transmission. In general, the power is always sent to the rear axle, although some units have the possibility of mounting a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.

Equipment of the Mercedes C-Class

Mercedes C-Class sheet

When talking about the interior and equipment of the Mercedes C-Class, we notice the aging of the product with respect to other more updated models of the German firm. Although it was updated in 2018, the platform does not allow you to access the most cutting-edge technology in the house. In the house is the Mercedes S-Class the one in charge of brand new technology that will later reach its older brothers, and in this case the C-Class will begin to enjoy it from its next generation.

When configuring a C-Class, Mercedes puts up for sale different lines of finishes with which to modify the exterior and interior styles: Avantgarde, Premium, Premium Plus and AMG Line. Thanks to this we can opt for a more classic environment to a more sporty one with the popular AMG package. Of course, in addition to design, those levels also modify the amount of technology and systems.

As far as equipment is concerned, the Mercedes C-Class can have interesting elements such as: digital instrument panel, LED matrix headlights, panoramic roof, keyless entry and start, wireless charger, 360º camera, electric and heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, connectivity for mobile devices, multimedia system screen up to 10 inches and a wide range of driving aids and assistants.

Mercedes C-Class according to Euro NCAP

The Mercedes sedan passed the European car safety tests in 2014, and obtained the maximum score, 5 stars out of 5. As for specific protection sections, the Class C achieved 92% and 84% in terms of safety for adult and child occupants, respectively, 77% in terms of protection for pedestrians, and 70% for the car's safety systems. These valuations are still valid in the 2018 update, as no changes have been made to the structure or general design of the car.

The Mercedes C-Class of Km 0 and Second hand

Throughout these almost 30 years of life, the Mercedes C-Class has been one of the best-selling sedans in our market. Although the segment is currently not in good health, it continues to be offered in secondary sales channels as a real alternative fashionable SUV. The Class C accumulates many units for sale, and thanks to them we can know that the price depends largely on the generation, although in general it can be said that the depreciation is in similar terms to that of its rivals.

Of course, as expected, the cheapest C-Class units are those corresponding to the first generation, around the years 1994 and 1995. In that case the starting prices are around 500 or 600 euros. If we move to the Km 0 market, the offer is also very extensive, with a clear majority for the four-door body. In those cases, the sale prices vary a lot depending on the mechanics and the finish, but we could set a starting price of around 45.000 euros for a 2020 model.

Rivals of the Mercedes C-Class

Mercedes C-Class sheet

Although the medium sedan segment is no longer as important as it was a few years ago, it is still a very important business niche for brands. The C-Class is located within the group of premium D-segment sedans. In that group we can also find its most direct rivals, which are: Audi A4, BMW Serie 3, Volvo S60 y Alfa Romeo Giulia. In addition to those, we can talk about other units that do not reach the premium category, such as the Volkswagen Passat, Opel Insignia, Renault talisman, or the Mazda6.
