Although sedans are suffering from the clear SUV trend in the market, the most passionate models of each house remain immune to fashion. Aspirational approach models such as the Mercedes E-Class Coupe They do not suffer from the changes in trend, because after all, no SUV is capable of giving or matching what they contribute.

We have tested this car:

Test Mercedes E 220 d Coupé

The E-Class Mercedes She is the oldest in the family. As such It has been on sale since 1953, although the denomination began to be applied in the 90s with the introduction of the fifth generation. In each and every one of them there has been a two-door coupe body, although on more than one occasion we have seen it with different names such as CE.

The last edition dates from 2017, although in 2020 it undergoes a major update, mainly at an aesthetic and mechanical level. Of course, this mid-commercial cycle restyling also affects the rest of the bodies of the Mercedes E-ClassAlthough in this case we are going to focus on the E Coupé and the E Cabrio.

Technical characteristics of the Mercedes E-Class Coupé

Mercedes-Benz E-Class AMG 53 Coupe 2020

The 2020 renewal does not apply a change in the structure of the car. The Mercedes E-Class Coupé and the E Cabrio enjoy the same platform as the four-door saloon. That leaves us with a chassis capable of accommodating various possible mechanical solutions and configurations. In the case at hand, it leaves us with some ideal measurements for the segment of E sedans.

Both the coupe and convertible bodywork enjoy the same exterior dimensions: 4,83 meters long, 1,86 meters wide and 1,43 meters high. To these dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,87 meters. A battle more than enough for both models to approve a four-passenger cabin. None of them offer five seats. They are always 2+2 with a correct space for subsequent occupants.

As far as load capacity is concerned, the Mercedes E-Class Coupé offers a minimum boot volume of 425 liters. Because of the retractable canvas top, the E-Class Convertible reduces its cargo capacity to 385 liters, 310 if the roof is stored in the corresponding space in the trunk. The electrically operated hood takes approximately 15 seconds to complete the entire journey at a maximum speed of 50 km/h.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Mercedes E-Class Coupé

Although one of the keys to the E-Class is its wide range of mechanics, the coupe and cabrio models do not enjoy the full range. They are models designed for recreational use, and that implies that their engines are more focused on comfort than pure performance, although there is some dalliance with power. Thus we distinguish a range with two diesel and four gasoline versions.

If we talk about the diesel variants, the offer is made up of the E 220 d with 194 horsepower and rear-wheel drive, and for the E 400 d 4MATIC. The latter enjoys a block of six cylinders in line that develops 330 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque. In all cases, the diesel is associated with a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

Gasoline engines present a more varied offer, and thanks to MHEV technologies, they enjoy the DGT ECO label. The introduction is presented with the E 200 with 197 horsepower and rear-wheel drive. And the top of the range is signed by the name AMG E 53 4MATIC + which, thanks to a three-liter inline six-cylinder engine, develops 435 horsepower.

Equipment of the Mercedes E-Class Coupé

From inside the Mercedes E-Class Coupé and the E-Class Cabrio, enjoy a very pleasant space to be. The correct use of materials increases the sensation of perceived quality by all occupants. It is the forwards who enjoy the greatest number of comforts and space. The later ones will see their space reduced, although not as much as in a Mercedes C-Class Coupe.

As usual in the house, Mercedes offers us various finishing lines. From the elegant Avantgarde level to the sporty AMG package which gives the exterior a much more attractive appearance. These different finishes also apply changes to the equipment, where of course it is worth noting the 12,3-inch dual-screen system that the E-Class was in charge of releasing and that has been extended to almost the entire German range.

As far as equipment is concerned, we can see that the E-Class Coupé focuses a large part of its systems on improving life on board. It is worth noting elements such as the LED matrix headlights, the HUD, the neck heating system for the E Cabrio, navigator, 360º camera, connectivity for mobile devices and much more. It is fair to also highlight the large number of safety elements and driving aids with level 2 autonomous driving.

The Mercedes E-Class Coupé on video

Mercedes E-Class Coupé according to Euro NCAP

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé completed the Euro NCAP car safety tests in 2016, obtaining the maximum score, 5 stars. As for security by technical sections, it achieved percentages of 95% and 90% respectively for protection of adult and child passengers, 77% for the safety of pedestrians, and 62% for automobile safety systems. These valuations are still valid in the 2020 version since there are no changes in the structure of the model.

The Mercedes E-Class Coupé of Km 0 and Second Hand

The Mercedes E-Class Coupé is an expensive car, its high cost makes it inaccessible to many buyers, and therefore a large part of them decide to go to secondary sales channels. In them we see that model depreciation varies greatly based on generation, although little by little the oldest ones are gaining weight and begin to rise in price.

The cheapest units for sale date from the early 90s (W124), its starting price starts at figures close to 4.000 euros. The 0 km market is practically non-existent. Being a very capricious model, the few customers who choose to buy their services decide to configure a custom model at the factory, and therefore dealers do not accumulate stock.

Rivals of the Mercedes E-Class Coupé

Mercedes-Benz E-Class AMG 53 Coupe 2020

It is not easy to classify the Mercedes E-Class Coupé. It derives from a sedan in the E segment, where we find natural rivals such as the Audi A6 or BMW Serie 5. However, many of its natural rivals do not have coupe or cabrio formats. That leaves us with the E-Class Coupe having few enemies in sight., the closest by size and concept are the BMW Serie 4 and Audi A5, although we could also add other models such as its little brother, the Mercedes C-Class Coupé.
