Mercedes live for a few years a sweet moment. Everything he produces is a success, and he has managed to beat his most direct rivals on many shared grounds. Originally launched in 2021, at the end of 2023 it receives a small update that improves its data and offers new aesthetic details.

All manufacturers are creating their first electrics and in many cases those first products arrive under a brand separate from the normal range. Mercedes EQ is the electrical division of the house. The most efficient range of all and the one that in the future, foreseeably, will support the weight of sales.

The EQA thus joins an increasingly long list of electric models from Mercedes, where initially there was only the Mercedes EQC, the genesis of this idea, are now Mercedes EQV, based on the Mercedes V Class, and the compact SUV. Many more units like the EQS will be added in the future based on the exceptional Mercedes S-Class.

Technical characteristics of the Mercedes EQA

As can be expected from its design, the Mercedes EQA derives from the company's compact SUV, the Mercedes GLA. Both share something more than appearance, because the main thing is that they also they are based on the same platform although with various necessary tweaks to make room for the bulk of the batteries. The first model of the house to offer a dedicated platform is the Mercedes EQS, the so-called EVA 2 architecture that will later be implemented in more models.

It is not ideal for a combustion car and an electric car to use the same structure, but Mercedes has managed quite well. This singularity makes the measurements between both models very similar. The Mercedes EQA reaches levels of 4,46 meters long, 1,83 meters wide and 1,62 meters high.

To these external measures must be added a wheelbase of 2,73 meters. A battle enough to approve a cabin for five passengers. Three of them will be located in a narrow second row in width, but with adequate space for legs and head. Regarding load capacity the Mercedes EQA has a 340 liter boot at least, reaching a maximum of 1.320 liters if the rear row of seats is folded down.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Mercedes EQA

Unlike the combustion models, the electric ones do not have as much mechanical diversity. In the Mercedes EQA, as in many other battery-powered cars, the range is short, and revolves around different battery capacities and the presence of one or two electric motors. Of course there is no other type of mobility solutions, focusing exclusively on a 100% electric architecture.

The range is made up of four units. By numbers, the access model is determined by the EQA 250 with a battery of 66,5 kWh of useful capacity and a single motor with 190 horsepower. Approves a range of 456 kilometers in the WLTP cycle. Next is the unit with the greatest autonomy in the family, the EQA 250+. With a battery of 70,5 kWh of useful capacity and a single 190-horsepower motor, the electric range reaches 560 kilometers through WLTP approval.

In the highest part of the family, due to performance, we find the models with two electric motors, one on each axle that allow the generation of an all-wheel drive scheme. The first unit is EQA 300 4MATIC with 228 horsepower and up to 459 kilometers of autonomy with a lithium-ion battery with a useful capacity of 66,5 kWh. With that same motor scheme we find the most powerful unit of all, the EQA 350 4MATIC. Its power is stretched to 292 horses, homologating the same 436 kilometers of autonomy in the WLTP homologation cycle..

Equipment of the Mercedes EQA

It is safe to say that the GLA is one of the best-equipped compact SUVs on the market, and therefore the same can be said for its electric version. The Mercedes EQA offers a well-presented cabin in materials and finishes, with an imposing technological layout. The feeling of quality is high.

The range of equipment is distributed in the usual Mercedes way. There are different packages and finishes that allow you to modify the general design of the car, being able to go from a more sober appearance to a more sporty one. Shows wheels between 18 and 20 inches, with a diverse and personalized color palette. There are many options available, but be careful with them because they make the final bill grow very quickly.

As far as equipment is concerned, the EQA leaves nothing to be desired. It offers the same systems that we can see in a combustion car. The list of elements is long, but it is worth noting: LED matrix headlights, keyless access and starting, digital instrumentation, voice control, MBUX system with a screen of up to 10,25 inches, mobile connectivity, remote updates (OTA), camera of 360 degrees and much more, including the complete package of safety and driving assistants.

Mercedes has to its credit some of the most important safety features in history. The German brand focuses on the protection of its vehicles. The Mercedes EQA is listed as a five-star SUV in the Euro NCAP tests. After the harsh crash tests, the results by sections have been the following: 97 out of 100 in adult passenger protection, 90 out of 100 in child passenger protection, 81 out of 100 in pedestrian vulnerability and 75 out of 100 in operation of assistants to driving. These valuations remain valid after the 2023 update as there are no changes in the structure of the vehicle.

Rivals of the Mercedes EQA

The electric little by little are growing in visibility and rivalry. More and more models emerge from the ovens of manufacturers. The Mercedes EQA is one of the first to make an appearance in the electric C-SUV segment, and therefore at the moment there are not many rivals available to face. But we do find some very similar ones like the Volvo XC40 Recharge, Tesla ModelY, el Audi Q4 etron, or Lexus UX300e. To these we can add similar units such as the Ford Mustang Mach-e, Volkswagen ID.4 or Kia EV6 y Hyundai ioniq 5. They sit outside the premium category but offer upcoming features and an equal electric concept.

When establishing sales prices, the EQA is postulated as the access unit to the Mercedes electric family. According to the Spanish configurator, the starting price of the Mercedes EQA is 57.031 euros, without offers or promotions. This value is associated with the EQA 250+ version with 190 horses and 559 kilometers of autonomy. The most expensive of the family is the EQA 350 4MATIC with 292 horsepower with a range of 456 kilometers. Its starting price is 61.254 euros, without offers or promotions.
