The model range of Mercedes-Benz does not stop growing. If its fleet of conventional vehicles is already one of the most generous on the world scene, the portfolio of electric vehicles is going the same way. The mercedes eqb It is one of the last units to join the party. A model that begins a new path that more rival units will follow in the future.

The simple and logical nomenclature of the Stuttgart ones leads us to consider the EQB as the electric version of the Mercedes GLB, Family SUV of the house with capacity for seven passengers. To put it in some way, it is the same strategy that was already followed with the Mercedes GLA and Mercedes EQA, or with the Mercedes S-Class and Mercedes EQS.

The presentation of the EQB takes place in the spring of 2021 as a completely new model, although its commercial launch is not carried out until February 2022. At the end of 2023 it receives a small mechanical, technological and aesthetic update. There is no precedent on which to settle, although it is not the first 100% electric model of the firm either since that honor corresponds to the Mercedes EQC. SUV, familiar, electric and with a unique modularity in its kind.

Technical characteristics of the Mercedes EQB

On the outside, the differences between the Mercedes EQB and its combustion namesake are apparent, as are they on the inside. But under the body of the electric we find the platform shared with the EQA, although in this case adapted for the specific measures of a larger and more voluminous SUV.

Externally, the dimensions of the EQB are slightly higher than those of the GLB, just a few centimeters here and there. The data reveals 4,68 meters long, 1,83 meters wide and 1,67 meters high. To these dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,83 meters. A battle generous enough to accommodate a maximum of seven passengers inside.

Two of them are found in a third row of difficult access and short space, ideal for children or adults to travel during long journeys. That last bench is hidden from view on the floor of a trunk of generous proportions. The Mercedes EQB offers a boot with a volume of 495 liters minimum capacity (465 for seven-seater units), expandable to 1.620 liters if the third and second row seats are completely folded down.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Mercedes EQB

At the moment, and given the recent launch of the product, we do not know how the EQB's mechanical range will be made up. Obviously, we do know that all available units will be 100% electric, since it was born as an efficient and ecological concept SUV. There are with front or total traction systems, known as 4MATIC, depending on the version.

With a short range, the access unit is presented under the name EQB 250 with 190 horsepower and 375 Nm of torque with 469 kilometers of range and a 66,5 kWh capacity battery. Next is the EQB 250+ with the same features, but with an increased battery capacity of up to 70,5 kWh that allows it to approve up to 536 kilometers of autonomy. It is the longest-range unit in the family and the most interesting in terms of price-range ratio.

Above is the EQB 300 4MATIC of 225 horsepower and 390 Nm of torque and an approved autonomy of up to 448 kilometers with a 66,5 kWh gross capacity battery. Above him is the version EQB 350 4MATIC the most powerful of the entire range. In this case the power rises to 286 horsepower with 520 Nm of torque with the same battery and the same autonomy as the previous unit.

Equipment of the Mercedes EQB

Behind the scenes, it is undeniable where the inspiration for the Mercedes EQB comes from. At first glance it is difficult to differentiate it from its combustion brother. The presentation is the same except for some details. And that means that the atmosphere is good in presentation, comfort and quality thanks to the use of good materials and surfaces with a pleasant touch.

As might be expected, the range of equipment for the Mercedes EQB is structured into different levels or packages. The available range allows not only to modify the load of systems, but also the exterior and interior appearance of the vehicle. Finishes such as AMG Line or Electric Art Line, are offered to allow the buyer to have a greater degree of customization. All this is completed with a wide range of paints and wheel styles.

As far as equipment is concerned, the EQB leaves nothing in the inkwell, showing that Mercedes continues to be a leading brand in technology. Many elements present, some to highlight are: LED matrix headlights, the latest generation MBUX system with a 10,25-inch central screen, voice control, connected services, Head-Up Display, 360-degree camera and a wide array of attendees at driving and safety elements with level 2 autonomous driving

After passing stringent crash tests, the Mercedes EQB has been awarded the five Euro NCAP safety stars, being one of the best valued within its category. These valuations remain valid after the 2023 update as there were no changes in the structure of the vehicle.

Rivals of the Mercedes EQB

As we have already said, the Mercedes EQB enters hitherto uncharted territory. SUV, family with up to seven seats, electric and premium segment D. Scanning the market, we do not see anything even remotely similar, although we do see similar alternatives that are not so versatile inside. The closest rivals to the German are: Volkswagen ID.4, skoda enyaq, Ford Mustang Mach-e, Hyundai ioniq 5, Kia EV6, BMW iX3, Jaguar I-Pace, Lynk & Co 01 y Tesla Model Y, in addition to its little brother the Mercedes EQA.
