Electric cars are no longer strange. The world is getting used to its increasingly habitual presence. Little by little the market is filling up with units, but few are as impressive as the Mercedes EQS. It is an electric luxury sedan, a melting pot of technology considered to be the electric version of the Mercedes S-Class.

We have tested this car:

The EQ range of Mercedes it is destined to mobilize the future. All its units have been developed for the sake of a 100% electric concept. The first model to join that family was the Mercedes EQC, and more recently they have added the Mercedes EQA, the Mercedes EQV and now the ultimate expression of luxury, performance and technology, the EQS.

We can also see the acronym EQ in other combustion models, as it is also used to define plug-in hybrid variants. The Mercedes EQS is presented in the spring of 2021 after several years of development. Although it is not the first of the family, it is the first to receive technologies, batteries and systems that over the years will be extended to the rest of the house models, such as the most recent Mercedes EQS SUV.

Technical characteristics of the Mercedes EQS

Developing a model as new as the EQS involves creating elements from scratch. Under the elegant and aerodynamic bodywork of the luxury sedan hides the EVA 2 platform from Mercedes, developed particularly for the new electric family. It is the first model to use it, although in the future it will be a common development for other sedans and SUVs that Mercedes plans to launch.

The Mercedes EQS does not intend to go unnoticed, and therefore delivers a generously proportioned size that places it directly in the F segment, the largest on the market. Outwardly it reaches 5,22 meters long, 1,93 meters wide and 1,51 meters high with a drag coefficient of 0,20. To these dimensions must be added an impressive wheelbase of 3,21 meters.

The passenger compartment sports a luxurious environment for five passengers to travel comfortably, although the central square is more uncomfortable and narrow. This can be completely eliminated, leaving a four-passenger interior with two luxury-type rear seats. Regarding the load capacity, the Mercedes EQS offers a boot volume of at least 610 liters, a figure that can be increased to 1.770 liters if the second row of seats is folded down.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Mercedes EQS

The EQS is born to become the best electric in the world. With this premise, the development team proposes a revolutionary and completely new mechanical range. Of course only electric systems will be available. A very complete range that revolves around a single battery with 107,8 kWh of useful capacity that offers a recharging power of up to 200 kW with a voltage of 400 volts.

At the moment there have been three versions announced. In a first step of power we find the Mercedes EQS 450+ with 333 horsepower and 568 Nm of torque with a single rear engine. Next is the EQS 580 4MATIC dual motor and all-wheel drive. Offers 524 horsepower and 855 Nm of torque. Both are the units that offer the greatest autonomy ranges, including between 668 and 741 kilometers measured in the WLTP homologation cycle.

The top of the range, for performance, is accompanied by the acronym AMG and a very popular name in the family. The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC + Enjoy two engines and all-wheel drive. develop a maximum of 658 horsepower and 950 Nm of torque. It homologates a range of 580 kilometers in the WLTP cycle with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3,8 seconds and a top speed of 220 km/h.

Equipment of the Mercedes EQS

How could it be otherwise, an electric like the EQS must be considered the most advanced car in the world, an honorary award that it steals from the S-Class. The interior of the electric saloon is impressive, both in presentation and finishes. A futuristic environment with up to three screens is completed with top-notch quality materials. Soft surfaces and excellent finish that raise the already high comfort of passengers.

As usual in the house, Mercedes is committed to offering different levels and finishes for its most expensive and powerful electric sedan. The range is made up of different finishes, where the AMG packages (Standard) and Edition 1 stand out., which is complemented by a slightly different look and is only available for the first units manufactured. Outwardly few are the details that change.

As far as equipment is concerned, we can not say anything else that the EQS presents the most advanced automotive technology in the world. Especially striking is the MBUX hyperscreen with 1,41 meters width and OLED technology.. In addition to that, if it seems not enough, an impressive collection of comfort and safety elements can be highlighted that make the EQS one of the safest cars in the world.

The Mercedes EQS according to Euro NCAP

When it comes to establishing safety, Mercedes has always stood out for its great involvement in avoiding fatalities in collisions. According to Euro NCAP, the Mercedes EQS receives the five star rating, being the safest model in the category and one of the safest on the market. By sections, the results are: 96 out of 100 in adult passenger protection, 91 out of 100 in child passenger protection, 76 out of 100 in pedestrian vulnerability and 80 out of 100 in the functioning of security assistants.

Mercedes EQS rivals

Directly there is nothing that resembles what Mercedes has presented with the EQS. Once again those from Stuttgart mark the way forward for the rest of the manufacturers as they did decades ago with the S-Class. We cannot mention direct rivals of the EQS, but we can refer to others that may be considered as an alternative less impressive. Porsche Taycan, The Audi e-tron GT and, bridging a lot of distances, Tesla Model S. Those are the models most similar to the Mercedes at present, although it is logical to think that over the years a greater number of alternatives will arise.
