If we made a list of the most relevant compacts, without a doubt the Opel Astra It is one of the most characteristic and important. The history of the German compact starts as the substitute for the classic Opel Kadett. In these years for sale, it has accumulated more than 10 million units sold worldwide, and hence its position as one of the most important figures in the C segment.

The first Astra that hit the road did so in 1991. It has been on sale for three decades now, and throughout those years different updates and new generations have emerged. Each one with more weight and better qualities than the previous one. The latest edition of the Opel Astra comes to light in the summer of 2021. A sixth generation that brings with it important innovations in all fields.

Although it appears in 2021, it is considered a model of 2022, since it will not be until the end of the year when its commercial landing takes place. Recently Opel became part of the Stellantis Group, the union of the PSA and FCA conglomerates. That means that the German compact has many similarities with other products of the firm, including of course with the Opel Mokka, from which he borrows his new image.

Technical characteristics of the Opel Astra

In this new stage, the Astra clearly enters the XNUMXst century. Under its new and stylized silhouette hides the EMP2 platform of the Stellantis Group. It is the same that we can see associated with a long and disparate list of models: Peugeot 308, Opel Grandland, Peugeot Rifter, DS 4 and even Citroen C4 SpaceTourer, among others. It is characterized by the transverse position of its engine and by front-wheel drive.

As was traditional, Opel offer the Astra in two possible bodies: a compact and a family version called Sports Tourer. Outwardly the compact Astra reaches the 4,37 meters long, 1,86 meters wide and 1,44 meters high. The most familiar format is extended to 4,64 meters long, 1,86 meters wide and 1,48 meters high. To these levels must be added a wheelbase of 2,67 meters for the compact and 2,73 meters for the family.

The maximum capacity is for five passengers, three of them are located in a rear row of seats with correct dimensions. Regarding load capacity, ehe compact model of the Opel Astra announces a trunk with a minimum capacity of 372 liters (352 liters for PHEV models). The largest format, the Astra Sports Tourer, the cargo capacity extends to 597 liters of minimum capacity. In both cases, the volume can grow by folding down the second row of seats.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Opel Astra

As dictated by the new European emissions and pollution regulations, the range of engines offered by the sixth generation of the Astra arrives loaded with many versions. The EMP2 platform allows the adoption of various mechanical units. Up to seven different units, where it is worth noting the drastic reduction in diesel engines and the appearance of a 100% electric model called Astra Electric with 156 horsepower, a lithium-ion battery with 50,8 kWh of net capacity and an approved autonomy of 416 kilometers.

The range starts with the smallest block of the whole family. It is a small turbocharged three-cylinder engine with 1.2 liters of displacement. It offers two power levels: 110 horses as a hotspot and 130 horses as the most performant version. It is joined by six-speed manual gearboxes or, optionally, eight-speed automatic gearboxes. Next, by power, the only diesel is placed, the 1.5 D of 130 horses.

And finally, at least at launch, the Opel Astra offers the new plug-in hybrid blocks. In a first point is the Hybrid 180. Offers 180 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque with an approved electric range of 67 kilometers. Above is the plug-in hybrid Astra GSE that has 225 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque with an electric range of 64 kilometers in the WLTP cycle.

Equipment of the Opel Astra

Admittedly, Opel has taken longer than necessary to upgrade to one of its star products along with the Opel Corsa. However, they make up for lost ground with the release of the sixth edition. Inside the doors, the new Astra offers a highly technological and well-presented cabin, where above all the new double panel arrangement at the top of the dashboard stands out.

As usual in the German house, all the equipment of the new Astra is divided into different lines or finishes. With a total of three levels, from lowest to highest endowment we find: Edition, GS and GSE. In each of them no more or less technologies are added, different aesthetic finishes are also applied, being able to go from a more sober appearance to a more sporty one depending on the client's tastes.

As far as equipment is concerned, the Opel Astra sports the most modern technology of the house and the Stellantis Group. The Germans have not left anything to put, and it is worth highlighting some elements such as: LED matrix headlights, digital instrumentation, multimedia system with voice control and 10-inch touch screen, connectivity for mobile devices, night vision, parking cameras and the most complete safety equipment and driving assistants.

The Opel Astra according to Euro NCAP

Opel has always been very committed to the safety of its vehicles. The new generation of the Opel Astra has four stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests. The results by sections are: 80 out of 100 in adult passenger protection, 82 out of 100 in child passenger protection, 67 out of 100 in pedestrian vulnerability and 66 out of 100 in driving assistants.

The Opel Astra of Km 0 and second hand

Along with the Corsa, the Opel Astra is one of the best-selling models of the German brand in our country. After 30 years behind it, it has become one of the key models in the segment, building along the way an appreciated reputation for durability. All of this affects alternative sales channels, where the Astra shows a depreciation value of 30,5%. A data similar to that offered by many of his rivals.

If we take a look at the second-hand market, we see that the most affordable units date from the second generation (1998-2004), with hardly any units from the first edition. The minimum prices are offered for amounts close to 400 euros for models with more than 250 thousand accumulated kilometers. The Km 0 channel shows just several hundred options available. In this case, prices are announced from 15.000 euros for models with a 1.2 horsepower 110T engine and base finish.

Rivals of the Opel Astra

Although the Opel Astra has changed a lot compared to its predecessor, the market has hardly done so, rather the opposite since has grown in recent years with the arrival of new rivals. We are talking about what has historically been the most important commercial niche in Europe, and therefore all the brands fight for it. That leaves us with the fact that the German's rivals are, among others: FIAT TypeSEAT LeonHonda CivicPeugeot 308Mazda 3Kia ceedRenault MéganeFord FocusHyundai i30Volkswagen Golf Toyota Corolla. Before them, it has to recover lost ground given the excessive obsolescence of the fifth generation.
