The SUV market has made all the brands launch themselves to conquer the largest possible market share. The compact segment is the largest in Europe, and the Renault Kadjar is the representative of the French brand in that market. A product that attracts mainly for its good price-product ratio.

It must be recognized that Renault was a bit slow when it came to launching a C-SUV. The Kadjar is located in a medium term within the range, above the Renault Captur and below the Renault Koleos, the largest in the house with a capacity for seven passengers. There is no precedent on it, and therefore it is an unprecedented model in the house, although not within the Nissan-Renault alliance.

Its official launch took place at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, starting its marketing almost immediately. That first generation is the one that continues to this day, although mid-cycle update released in late 2018, getting a minimal update in 2022 with an exclusive focus on equipment. Its disappearance takes place at the end of 2023 when the Kadjar is replaced by the Renault Australia.

Technical characteristics of the Renault Kadjar

As we have already mentioned, Renault and Nissan they have an agreement by which they share approaches and expenses in the development of some models. Under the bodywork of the Renault Kadjar hides the alliance's CMF platform. It is the same structure that we can see in other models such as the 2014 Nissan Qashqai, Renault Mégane, Nissan Pulsar or Renault talisman.

This versatile and modular structure adapts to each body according to specific measurements. The dimensions of the Kadjar are: 4,49 meters long, 1,84 meters wide and 1,61 meters high. To these external dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,65 meters. A battle that allows you to offer a passenger compartment for a maximum of five approved passengers.

Three of them are installed in a generously sized second row of seats, where the central passenger will have the inconvenience of traveling in a narrower and more uncomfortable seat. Regarding load capacity, the Renault Kadjar offers a trunk of 472 liters minimum capacity. This figure can grow to a maximum of 1.478 liters if we completely lower the second row of seats.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Renault Kadjar

Currently, brands are forced to present a varied mechanical range committed to the strictest emission levels set by the European Union. The Kadjar suffers from a clear longevity in the mechanical section, since its range is not capable of offering engines with some type of electrification. Today the mechanical portfolio is made up of two gasoline versions and one diesel.

All of them send the power to the front axle through the management of a seven-speed manual or automatic gearbox with double clutch depending on the selected model. A single motor is in charge of supplying the performance. The diesel offering offers a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 1.5 liters of displacement Blue dCi. Deliver 115 horses and is always associated with the seven-speed EDC transmission.

The gasoline offer has the 1.3 horsepower Kadjar 140 TCe access unit and 240 Nm of maximum torque. The most powerful version is the Kadjar 1.3 TCe with 160 horsepower. and 260 Nm of maximum torque. In the latter case it always arrives associated with the automatic transmission. The entire range receives the C label from the DGT, with approved consumption in the WLTP cycle between 5,1 and 6,7 liters per 100 kilometers travelled.

Equipment of the Renault Kadjar

Renault is considered a mid-level generalist brand. That translates into a correct interior quality and without great fanfare. From doors inside the Kadjar sports a well-presented interior in terms of equipment and materials. Although plastic is the main compound, other surfaces are covered by soft materials with a pleasant touch, increasing the sense of quality perceived by passengers.

As usual in the French house, the equipment structure is divided into different levels. From 2022 changes are introduced in the range, granting a broader standard equipment. The offer is divided into two levels: Equilibre and Techno. The differences lie mainly in the equipment, although different aesthetic elements are also offered for each unit.

As far as equipment is concerned, the Renault Kadjar shows excessive aging compared to the latest generation models. Despite this, the 2019 restyling improved conditions. It is worth highlighting elements such as: partially digital instrumentation, dual-zone climate control, multimedia system with a seven-inch touch screen, browser, connectivity for mobile devices, LED headlights, a parking camera and many driving assistants.

Renault Kadjar video test

The Renault Kadjar according to Euro NCAP

The vast majority of Renault models have the highest score in the European car safety tests. in 2015 Euro NCAP tests the safety of the Renault Kadjar, obtaining 5 stars after rigorous crash tests. In terms of safety, by sections, it achieved 89% and 81% in terms of protection for adult and child passengers, respectively, while safety for pedestrians was 74%. On the other hand, car security systems achieved 71%. These valuations are still valid today as there has been no change in the structure of the vehicle.

The Renault Kadjar of Km 0 and second hand

Throughout these years the Renault Kadjar has been conquering more and more market share, becoming a popular model in the best-seller lists. It is postulated as a great alternative in price-product ratio, and a low maintenance cost model. Diversity of models are offered in the alternative sales channels, and thanks to this we observe a depreciation of around 30%, an average figure within the category.

If we take a look at the second-hand and second-hand market, we see that the most affordable units date from the first years of marketing, all of them prior to the restyling of 2019. Prices start in amounts close to 11.000 euros for models with more than 250 thousand kilometers and diesel mechanics. The offer of Km 0 is almost nil since the prices do not offer great differences with respect to new models ordered from the factory.

Rivals of the Renault Kadjar

Not another thing, but by rivals in the C-SUV segment it will not be. The offer of possibilities is very wide, offering different bodies and lines, such as that offered by the Renault arkana, the coupé variant of the Kadjar. The most direct rivals of the French are: Nissan Qashqai, SEAT Ateca, Hyundai Tucson, KIA Sportage, Skoda Karoq, Peugeot 3008, Opel Grandland X, Ford Kuga, Volkswagen Tiguan y Citroen C5 Aircross. All of them are similar in size, features and prices, although the Kadjar is one of the cheapest.
