During the years in which the Renault Laguna has been marketed, they have offered multiple diesel and gasoline engines. The simplest alternative among the gasoline engines was the 1.6 with 110 hp, followed by the 2.0 with 143 and the 2.0 turbo with 170 and 205 hp. There was also a 3.5 V6 of 238 horses. The diesel range began with the 1.5 horsepower 110 dCi and relied on the 2.0 dCi for the 130, 150 and 175/180 horsepower versions. A 3.0 V6 dCi was the most powerful alternative, with up to 241 hp. In the range there were versions with automatic gearbox and also the so-called 4Control, with four-wheel steering.

The main rivals for the sedan and estate bodies of the Renault Laguna are the Opel Insignia, Volkswagen Passat y Ford Mondeo, while the Renault Laguna Coupé is a model that is more similar to the Audi A5 or Mercedes C-Class Coupe.
