SUVs have conquered all segments of the market, from the largest niches to the smallest. The Renault Koleos it was one of the pioneers of the industry, although it has not always conquered the market. throughout the years Renault has used that nomenclature for different models.

The original Koleos was launched on the market in 2006, at the dawn of the SUV trend started by the Nissan Qashqai. The French, seeing the success achieved by the Japanese, embarked on the adventure of creating a direct rival, a C-SUV, with a cheaper and more affordable economic approach. That Koleos rivaled more with a Dacia Duster than with a Qashqai, and therefore its sales were not satisfactory.

In 2016 it disappears from the European automobile scene, and the name of Renault Koleos then passes into the hands of the largest and most luxurious SUV of the house. The flagship of a range where we find the Renault Captur, Renault Kadjar and Renault arkana. Unlike the past model, the new Koleos rivals in the D segment. That first generation is still valid, although in 2020 it undergoes a light restyling.

Technical characteristics of the Renault Koleos

Renault Koleos Facelift Front

Today it is very difficult to wage war on your own, and that is why Renault and Nissan form one of the most successful and popular partnerships in the industry. The two manufacturers share developments with the intention of offering cheaper and more interesting products. The Renault Koleos rests on the alliance's CMF-CD platform. The same structure that we can see in other models such as the Nissan X-Trail.

In 2016 the Koleos moves up a size grade, entering the D-SUV segment. The dimensions are: 4,37 meters long, 1,84 meters wide and 1,67 meters high. To these external dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,7 meters. A battle that allows you to offer a passenger compartment for a maximum of five approved passengers.

Three of them are installed in a generously sized second row of seats, where the central passenger will have the inconvenience of traveling in a narrower and more uncomfortable seat. Regarding load capacity, the Renault Koleos offers a trunk of 493 liters of minimum capacity. This figure can grow if the second row of seats is completely folded down, reaching a maximum of 1.707 liters.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Renault Koleos

Renault Koleos 2017

Currently, brands are forced to present a varied mechanical range committed to the strictest emission levels set by the European Union. The Koleos suffers from a clear longevity in the mechanical section, since its range is not capable of offering engines with some type of electrification, not even as a result of the 2020 update. The engine portfolio offers a diesel and a gasoline variant.

by power the range starts with the petrol Koleos TCe. It mounts a turbocharged four-cylinder block with 1.333 cubic centimeters that develops 160 horsepower at 3.750 revolutions and 270 Nm of torque at 1.800 turns. All the force is transmitted to the asphalt through the front wheels, and management is derived from a seven-speed dual-clutch EDC automatic transmission.

The most powerful unit is the diesel Koleos dCi. It offers a turbocharged four-cylinder block with 1.997 cubic centimeters. It develops 185 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque.. In this case, the force can be allocated to the front axle or to the four wheels as an option. Management once again is entrusted to an X-Tronic automatic transmission, which in this case is continuously variable.

Equipment of the Renault Koleos

New Renault Koleos

Renault is considered a mid-level generalist brand. That translates into a correct interior quality and without great fanfare. Nevertheless, the Koleos offers the best cabin in the family. An excellent presentation both in technology and qualities. The feeling of quality is high thanks to the fact that many surfaces are covered with soft materials with a pleasant touch.

As usual in the French house, the equipment structure is divided into different levels. From lowest to highest endowment we find: Equilibre, Techno and Initiale Paris. The differences between them not only lie in the technology they incorporate, but also in the aesthetic appearance they offer and in the quality of some finishes. In this way we can go from a basic model to a more complete and refined one.

As for equipment, As a good flagship that it is, the Renault Koleos offers state-of-the-art technology. The list of elements is long, and it is worth highlighting: Full LED headlights, voice control, sunroof, 360-degree camera, digital instrumentation, multimedia system with touch screen up to 8,7 inches, browser, electric and heated front seats, connectivity for smartphones and a complete list of driving assistants.

The Renault Koleos of Km 0 and second hand

The different phases through which the Koleos has passed lead us to a very varied offer in the secondary sales channels. In them we find models belonging to the first generation and its restyling, and models with the current format. Because of this, depreciation varies. Around 32% for old models and approximately 30% depreciation for Koleos from 2016 onwards. Values that place him in figures close to those of his closest rivals.

If we take a look at the used and second-hand market, we see that the cheapest units for sale date from the first generation (2006 – 2016). Prices start at figures close to 5.000 euros for models with more than 200 thousand kilometers traveled with intermediate finishes and diesel mechanics. The Km 0 market is much less popular, registering just a handful of units for sale with uninteresting prices compared to factory models.

Rivals of the Renault Koleos

Although the D-SUV segment is not the most commercial by sales volume, the vast majority of manufacturers are committed to offering at least one unit in it. That means that the list of rivals of the Renault Koleos is long and varied. Figures such as the already mentioned X-Trail or: SEAT Tarraco, Skoda Kodiaq, Hyundai Santa Fe, KIA Sorrento, Peugeot 5008 y Ssangyong rexton. Among them, it stands out for the quality of its finishes and for offering an attractive sale price, although it penalizes equipment and mechanical range with respect to more current models.
