El Toyota Aygo is an urban model belonging to segment A and is the smallest vehicle that Toyota sold in its dealerships, just above other successful models such as the Toyota Yaris or  Toyota Corolla. Although in the past it was marketed with several possible bodies, it is currently offered exclusively as a five-door urban.

The first generation of the Aygo was officially presented in 2005. A time of splendor for models in this category. That first generation was on the market until 2014, having undergone a major mid-cycle refresh in 2012 along the way.

The second, and latest generation was presented at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. Since then, the small Japanese model has only undergone a major update, in 2018, where improvements and innovations are introduced in every way. Finally, in mid-2021 the small Japanese utility disappears from the catalog, giving up its space to the Toyota Aygo XCross.

Technical characteristics of the Toyota Aygo

Toyota Aygo small automatic car

The Aygo is the result of a joint venture of several brands. Toyota, together with the PSA conglomerate, where they are integrated Citroën y Peugeot , jointly led the development. The result has been three different models in appearance, but the same in essence. It can be said that the Aygo is the first cousin of the Peugeot 108 and the Citroën C1, because although they may not seem like it, they are the same car with different covers.

The Toyota Aygo is marketed exclusively as a five-door model. His measurements continue to position him perfectly within segment A. 3,46 meters long, 1,61 meters wide and 1,46 meters high. To these external dimensions must be added a wheelbase of just 2,34 meters. That battle allows you to offer a very fair interior space, with capacity for a maximum of four passengers.

The trunk volume of the Toyota Aygo announces 168 liters of minimum capacity. This volume can grow if the second row of seats is completely folded down. In its five-door configuration, the little Japanese shows two different versions, one with a hard top and the other with a retractable canvas roof called x-sky. It is not a cabrio because the pillars and the structure do not accompany the mobile roof.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Toyota Aygo

The urban performance that the Toyota Aygo is supposed to allow it to offer a very short mechanical range, limited exclusively to a single petrol version. Said limited power unit is always managed by a five-speed manual gearbox. Optionally there is the possibility of mounting a five-speed automatic transmission.

The engine in question is a three-cylinder block with a transverse front layout, naturally aspirated and with a displacement of 998 cubic centimeters. develops 72 horsepower at 6.000 revolutions and 93 Nm of torque at 4.400 engine revolutions. Officially announces a combined consumption in the WLTP cycle of 4,8 liters per 100 kilometers traveled.

At the moment the future of the smallest of the house is unknown. By buying trend, the utility segment is turning towards 100% electric mobility. Many rivals of the Japanese have taken the step, but Toyota at the moment does not take it, clearly betting on conventional hybrid technology as it already does with the rest of the product range.

Equipment of the Toyota Aygo

From doors to inside, the Toyota Aygo is shown as a typical urban. The quality of the materials is nothing more than correct. All surfaces are made of hard plastic, and the few quality details are derived from specific areas such as the leather steering wheel or the seats, which show fabric as the most common material, and certain leather details in the highest finishes.

As is customary in the house, the Aygo shows a very complete and varied range of equipment where the customization options are wide and varied. There are currently available four different levels: x-play, x-cite JBL, x-clusiv and x-style. Unlike the first three, the latter is always associated with the version with mobile canvas technology.

In terms of equipment, the Aygo attributes excessive longevity and a clear urban focus where excessive luxuries are not available. It is worth highlighting elements such as: keyless entry and start, LED daytime running lights, XNUMX-inch touchscreen multimedia system with mobile device connectivity and navigation, automatic climate control, multifunction steering wheel and the Toyota Safety Sense safety equipment.

The Toyota Aygo according to Euro NCAP

In 2017 Euro NCAP put the safety of the Aygo to the test in its already famous crash test. After undergoing these tests, the Japanese urban was certified with three of the five safety stars. The results obtained yielded a rating of 7,4 in adult passenger protection, 6,3 in child passenger protection, 6,4 in pedestrian protection and 2,5 in driving assistants. Subsequently, the tests were repeated with the security package installed and the rating rose to four stars.

The Toyota Aygo of Km 0 and second hand

In these years in which the Toyota Aygo has been for sale, has achieved good sales figures, mainly during the years belonging to the first generation (2005 – 2014). The change in market trend has caused a wear in the purchase of models belonging to segment A, which have ended up losing interest and have increased their devaluation percentage, which in the case of the Japanese is situated in the average of the segment.

In secondary sales channels such as second-hand, we observe that the cheapest units date from that first generation with starting prices close to 2.000 euros for models with more than 180 thousand kilometers. The Km 0 market is very deficient. There are hardly any units available for sale. Some of these units have attractively discounted prices compared to dealer prices.

Rivals of the Toyota Aygo

The electric ones are postulated as the ideal mobility solution for short or medium distance routes. The urban ones are the most reasonable of all due to the contained price and the many advantages they present. Almost the entire segment A is switching to electric mobility. Nonetheless, the Toyota Aygo is still betting on thermal engines, but its rivals are still the same as we already knew. In addition to its brothers C1 and 108, units such as: Renault Twingosmart forfourSEAT Mii ElectricSkoda Citigoe IVMitsubishi Space StarSuzuki IgnisVolkswagen e-up! y FIAT 500. The advantage of betting on non-electric technologies is that the 108 can offer a lower selling price.

Toyota Aygo prices

Despite its longevity, poor equipment, or short and inefficient mechanical range, the Aygo can be considered an expensive car. The starting price of the Toyota Aygo is 11.700 euros, without offers or promotions. That value corresponds to a model with x-play finish and five-speed manual gearbox.
