El Toyota Camry It is one of the best-selling and most popular cars in history. Although it does not surpass the success of the Toyota Corolla, it can be said that this saloon has been adapting to each and every one of the decades in which it has lived. Today it is considered a rare model in the Spanish market, where sedans suffer from the commercial push of the most modern SUVs.

The history of the Camry begins in 1982. Originally considered a mid-size model, being the hatchback version of the Toyota Celica, the hatchback has grown over the years and generations. In those years it has gone through various names such as Daihatsu Altis, Toyota Vista or Hilden Apollo, among others. Although it is currently considered a global product, the Camry has hardly had visibility in the European market, where its position was occupied by the Toyota Avensis.

In 2019 the Japanese decide to cease production of the Avensis, officially introducing the Toyota Camry in the old continent for the first time. A rare and controversial strategy considering the decline in sales of the D-segment of sedans. In 2021 a small restyling takes place. A commercial mid-cycle update that focuses primarily on cosmetic and equipment changes.

Technical characteristics of the Toyota Camry

Like all new generation Toyota models, the Camry rests on the new platform TNGA of the Japanese conglomerate. It is actually a specific version of it called GA-K, which is also used by other units such as the Lexus ES, the new generation of Lexus NX and the gigantic Toyota Highlander. It is characterized by its front-wheel drive and its specific preparation for various mechanical systems.

The Toyota Camry is the company's largest saloon, clearly entering the general D-segment, although due to its quotas it ranks as one of the largest. Outwardly it reaches 4,88 meters long, 1,84 meters wide and 1,44 meters high. To these measures must be added a wheelbase of 2,82 meters. A battle that allows you to offer an interior space for a maximum of five passengers.

Three of them are located in a generously proportioned third row of seats, even large passengers will be able to travel comfortably. As far as load capacity is concerned, the Toyota Camry announces a trunk volume of 524 liters As minimum. That amount can be extended over a thousand liters if the second row of seats is completely folded down in its 60:40 ratio.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Toyota Camry

If we talk about Toyota we have to talk about hybrids and vice versa. The Japanese brand has positioned itself as the leader of this technology, and bets on it in almost all of its range. The mechanical range of the Camry stands out for a single version, hybrid of course. All units offered are accompanied by a CVT automatic transmission and a front-wheel drive scheme.

The set is starred by a naturally aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine with 2.487 cubic centimeters of displacement. It develops a maximum power of 178 horsepower at 5.700 revolutions and 221 Nm of torque between 3.600 and 5.200 revolutions.. A small nickel-metal hydride battery with a capacity of 1,59k kWh gives it an electric range of just two kilometers thanks to a 120-horsepower electric motor.

Equipment of the Toyota Camry

Keep in mind that the Toyota Camry is positioned as one of the reference models within the company. This means that from the inside out, it delivers superior quality to that of other models, such as the Toyota RAV4. Soft surfaces with a pleasant touch that convey a great sense of perceived quality to the occupants, thus strengthening ride comfort thanks to its 100% electric mobility.

As usual in the house, the range of equipment is divided into different levels, two in this case. From smallest to largest endowment we find: Advance and Luxury. Although there are design differences between both levels, the general discrepancies lie in the equipment section. Additionally, there is a Business finish designed mainly for company fleets or transport services.

Unlike more modern models, the Camry is not positioned as a reference model in terms of technology. Its commitment is based on cost control, although it does offer interesting systems such as: LED headlights, keyless entry and start, nine-inch touchscreen multimedia system, wireless charging, climate control, mobile device connectivity and much more, including the standard Toyota Safety Sense package.

The Toyota Camry of Km 0 and second hand

Although the Camry has a long history behind it, the low presence in our country means that alternative sales channels do not show many available options. Nor does the current state of general sedan sales help. For all these reasons, hardly any units are shown for sale, and in them we observe that the depreciation value is slightly higher than other models in the category, hovering around a median estimate of 26%.

Given the low commercial success, dealers do not accumulate stock in warehouses, so it is practically impossible to find available km 0 models. The second-hand or occasion offer is not very prolific either. Barely two dozen units where prices start from quantities close to 1.500 euros for imported models from the 90s and from 25.500 euros for latest generation models. All of them lacking the restyling applied in 2021.

Toyota Camry rivals

Little by little the market is shedding the last remaining general sedans. Where before several models were offered, today they can be counted on the fingers of one hand. The Toyota Camry has few rivals in sight, and all of them are found in the general D segment, where he competes with known enemies such as: Volkswagen Passat, Skoda Superb, Mazda6, Renault talisman, Opel Insignia o Peugeot 508, among others. They are all similar in size and general concept, although the Japanese is one of the largest.
