One in four vehicles sold in the world is a pick-up. Although in the day-to-day life of European cities they are not the most advisable vehicles, in the world they are necessary as a functional, reliable and versatile work tool. If we talk about trucks, the Toyota Hilux It is the most recognized and sold model in the world, with a history behind it that spans several decades.

To date the origins of this pick-up we must go back to 1968. The first generation of the Hilux emerged as the industrial variant of a conventional tourism of Toyota. Its load capacity and versatility marked the way forward, and in consecutive editions the model moved away from the ground while gaining off-road capabilities.

Currently the Toyota Hilux is in its eighth generation. The last of them was presented in society in 2015, although Europe began to enjoy it somewhat later. Beneath the Hilux's large, muscular body hides a traditional pick-up and off-road vehicle chassis. It is a platform of stringers and crossbars with rear leaf spring suspension specially designed to withstand heavy loads, great off-road capacity and high body versatility.

Today the Toyota Hilux is sold in three possible formats: Single Cab, Extra Cab and Double Cab. Each of them varies in the load capacity of the box and in the number of occupants it can hold. With a wheelbase of 3,08 meters, the length takes us up to 5,34 meters by 1,85 meters wide and 1,81 meters high.

The load capacity of the box allows up to 1.040 kilograms of cargo. Depending on the cabin, it can accommodate between two and five passengers, and in terms of off-road dimensions, it offers 27 degrees of entry angle, 27 degrees of departure angle and 23 degrees of ventral angle with a wading depth of up to 70 centimeters with a free height of 29,3 centimeters.

One of the most notable changes for the 2021 edition is the change to the main drive. Toyota has had to adjust to the new and stricter European emission regulations, and for this it has replaced the old block with a more modern one with the latest generation energy certification. The mechanical offer is limited, two units, both medium power diesel. At the end of 2023, an MHEV diesel unit will be presented that will be approved for the ECO label by the DGT.

The range starts with 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder block. Available in all body styles, this powertrain delivers 150 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. It always arrives associated with a six-speed manual gearbox and a permanent all-wheel drive scheme with reduction gear. Its estimated consumption is between 9,5 and 9,7 liters per 100 kilometers traveled.

In its most performance format, the Toyota Hilux is equipped with a block of turbocharged four-cylinder with 2.755 cubic centimeters cylinder capacity develop 204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque maximum. Always equipped with an all-wheel drive system with a reduction gear, this version can be fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

An improvement in technology that makes the Toyota Hilux more of a recreational vehicle than an industrial one. As usual, the range of equipment is divided into different levels. From lowest to highest equipment we find: GX, GX Plus, VX, VXL and GR Sport. Lower trims are only available for Single Bed and Extra Cab bodies. The most complete levels are offered exclusively for the double cabin version. They not only deliver more equipment, but also a slightly different style depending on the finish, being able to opt for a slightly sportier format in the GR Sport finish.

As far as technology is concerned, the Toyota Hilux offers systems similar to those of any tourism in the house. Elements such as LED headlights, keyless entry and start, rear parking camera, multimedia system with 8-inch touch screen, connectivity for mobile devices, and a correct set of driving assistance elements should be highlighted.

The Toyota Hilux achieved a score of 3 stars out of 5 in the European car safety tests, Euro NCAP. This score is based on the most basic level of equipment, while with the most complete finish, it achieved the maximum score, 5 out of 5. In terms of safety by sections, the basic Hilux obtained 85% and 82% in terms of safety. protection for adult and child occupants, respectively, while safety for pedestrians was 73%. On the other hand, the car's security systems achieved 25%, a low figure in the tests. These valuations are still valid in the 2021 model as there has been no change in the structure of the vehicle.

If we take a look at the second-hand market we see that the offer is varied in versions and bodies. The cheapest models set their prices in amounts close to 4.000 euros for versions from the 90s with up to 500.000 kilometers travelled. More recent units raise prices to around 10.000 euros.
