El Toyota Prius + it is the first model to be derived from the hybrid family Prius. Toyota launched it on the European market in 2012 after being presented at the International Auto Show in Detroit 2011. In the US it has ceased marketing due to low sales.

Throughout the years that it has been for sale, it has received two restylings to improve its endowment of series and image. However, today it is single compact minivan endowed with hybrid mechanics, because the model proposed by BMW is too expensive.

As a curiosity, and as it happens with other models of Toyota, the Prius+ is named differently depending on the market. In Asia it is called Priusα (Alpha), in Japan Daihatsu Mebius, Grand Prius+ in Belgium or Prius Wagon in the Netherlands.

Technical characteristics of the Toyota Prius +

Toyota Prius +

As it is a residential version superior to the Toyota Prius conventional, the Toyota Prius+ is structurally based on the same platform used by the third generation. Despite this, the dimensions have been extended in order to accommodate a third row, which, although it is not particularly beneficial for adults, is convenient for child passengers on medium or short distance routes.

In terms of size, the Prius+ stands out in the compact minivan segment for its particularly different silhouette. Externally, it reaches heights that take it to 4,64 meters in length, 1,77 meters in width and 1,57 meters in height, presenting in turn a distance between axis de 2,78 meters, which allows that interior space for a maximum of seven passengers.

With three rows available, the last one is hidden and folded in the boot floor. Depending on the configuration deployed, the Toyota Prius+ offers various cargo volumes. With seven seats the volume is reduced to 200 liters, growing to 505 liters with two rows and 1.750 liters when the second and third row seats are folded down completely.

If we talk about Toyota, it is inevitable to associate it with hybrids. The Toyota Prius + does not stand out for a varied and differentiated mechanical offer, but it does bet everything on consumption and efficiency. The range includes a single hybrid version with the DGT ECO label. All the power goes to the front axle through the management of an automatic change of continuous variator CVT.

The only unit available is recognized by the designation 1.8 HSD. It uses a 1.8-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol block. Added to it is a front electric motor and a 1 kWh capacity battery. Develops a total of 136 horsepower. Its estimated electric autonomy is two kilometers, with a self-recharging system capable of extending the range, mainly on urban circuits.

Equipment of the Toyota Prius+

The list of finishes and equipment of the Toyota Prius + for the Spanish market is organized around three versions. From lowest to highest standard endowment we can find the names: Eco, Advance and Executive. In addition to technological differences, there are also aesthetic discrepancies, applying slight customizable details in each of the versions.

Among the outstanding equipment of the Eco version we find elements such as Toyota Touch multimedia system with 6,1-inch touch screen, LED headlights or the Toyota Safety Sense security system (Pre-Collision Safety System, Involuntary Lane Change Warning, Intelligent Control of High Beams and Traffic Sign Recognition).

The intermediate Advance version adds 17-inch alloy wheels, an intelligent entry system on all doors or a rear view camera to the previous equipment. Lastly, in the Executive finish highlights the panoramic Skyview sunroof, Toyota E-Tex upholstery (simulated leather) and heated front seats or darkened rear and rear side windows.

The Toyota Prius + of Km 0 and second hand

The Toyota Prius +, despite being a model that has been on the market for several years, and its reputation as a reliable and economical model, has not caught on among the public. For this reason, finding second-hand or zero kilometer units on the market is complicated. Something that is common since the market for traditional MPVs has yielded its sales to SUVs and models derived from industrial vehicles such as the Toyota Proace City Verso. Its average depreciation is around 21,5 percent.

If we are interested in a used Prius+, we can find units registered in the year 2013, with mechanical hybrid gasoline 1.8 HSD (140H) of 136 CV, automatic gearbox e-CVT, Advance termination and more than 180.000 kilometers per amounts close to 12.000 euros. Given the commercial disappearance in 2020, there are no units available in the Km 0 channel.

Toyota Prius+ rivals

Toyota Prius +

By positioning in the range of the Japanese manufacturer, the Toyota Prius + is part of the segment of compact minivans. However, due to its technical approach, it can also be included in that of hybrid vehicles focused on family use. In any case, some rivals (by positioning in the segment) against which the Prius+ has to compete are the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer 225xeVolkswagen Touran, Kia carens, Opel Zafira, Renault Grand Scenic, Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, as well as the Ford Grand C Max. Against them, the Prius + provides a remarkable price-quality-equipment ratio, a frugal hybrid gasoline mechanic and a high manufacturing quality. On the contrary, it cannot compete for habitability in the second row of seats, trunk capacity with 7 seats deployed, breadth of mechanical range or experience.
