The market is changing its purchasing trends. In recent years, the appearance of SUVs has completely changed the preferences of drivers. Traditional segments are being threatened by new categories. Classic minivans are about to disappear, but, on the contrary, MPVs derived from industrialists are only growing, as is the case with the Toyota Proace City Verso.

Toyota He had never made the decision to work in this market, but in view of the changes in purchases, he has decided to join. The Proace City Verso is the tourism option of the industrial vehicle from which it derives, the Toyota Proace City. Both models appear at the same time, being officially presented in 2019. The aesthetic differences lie mainly in the industrial character of one, while the Verso opts for more common design solutions for passenger cars.

For the creation of its Proace range, Toyota joined an international alliance with the intention of reducing costs. The now Stellantis Group signed a collaboration agreement with the Japanese giant. Thanks to this, several models have emerged, industrial and passenger cars, twinned. Each one differs in the aesthetic section, but under their bodies they share a large number of elements and technologies.

Technical characteristics of the Toyota Proace City Verso

One of the most notable and important changes in this new range of vehicles from the Stellantis Group, in which Toyota collaborates, is the use of the EMP2 platform. This state-of-the-art structure is the same that we can see in other vehicles of the multinational conglomerate such as the Peugeot 3008, Opel Grandland or even the DS 7 Crossback. It stands out for its adaptability to different models and different propulsion systems.

Toyota sells two bodies of different sizes: Normal and Long. For that reason the external measures change. The smallest model shows dimensions that reach 4,4 meters long, 1,85 meters wide and 1,88 meters high with a wheelbase of 2,78 meters. The top-sized version stretches to 4,75 meters long, 1,85 meters wide and 1,88 meters tall with a wheelbase of 2,97 meters.

Given the variations in size and wheelbase, the Proace City Verso offers a capacity for five or seven passengers in both bodies, with individual seats. When it comes to cargo capacity, the smallest model announces a trunk volume of 597 liters. In its superior format the Proace City Verso Largo offers a minimum capacity of 850 liters. Either way, the two rear rows can be folded up and removed from the vehicle, making the conversion to a regular cargo vehicle.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Toyota Proace City Verso

When choosing the mechanical range for the Proace City Verso, Toyota has borrowed, once again, engines from the Stellantis Group. Blocks more focused on supporting heavy loads than enjoying high performance. Thanks to the EMP2 platform, the mechanical offer is varied in mobility solutions. The range is made up of two petrol versions, a diesel, plus a 100% electric unit. As a curiosity, it should be mentioned that the Proace City Electric is the first electric in the history of Toyota.

The portfolio starts with 1.2P with 110 horsepower and 205 Nm of torque. It uses a turbocharged three-cylinder block with 1.199 cubic centimeters. The same drive unit is used for the Proace City 1.2P with 131 horsepower and 230 Nm of torque. The only diesel version uses a turbocharged four-cylinder block with 1.499 cubic centimeters. That Proace City 1.5D develops 131 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. All units send power to the front axle by managing manual or automatic transmissions depending on the version.

The most ecological and efficient model in the range is the most recent Toyota Proace City Electric with the ZERO environmental label from the DGT. It has a 50 kWh capacity lithium-ion battery that powers a single front electric motor. It develops 136 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque. It approves an electric range of 280 kilometers in the WLTP cycle. For recharging, fast charging systems are chosen, up to 100 kW in direct current and 11 kW in alternating current.

Equipment of the Toyota Proace City Verso

Commercial vehicles converted into passenger cars have multiple habitability advantages, although quality has never figured among their strengths. The Stellantis Group MPV family offers vehicles that are very well presented inside. A pleasant design is combined with a choice of materials typical of the segment. An excessive use of hard plastics reduces the sensation of perceived quality, although the general comfort is very good.

As usual in the Japanese firm, the technology offered is structured in two different levels of equipment. From lowest to highest endowment we find: Family Active and Family Active. These are very closed equipment packages that hardly allow the possibility of adding or subtracting elements. Aesthetically there are certain differences between the finishes, since the Advance finish can only be offered with the shortest of the two possible bodywork.

As far as equipment is concerned, the Toyota Proace City Verso enjoys its own technologies to those of any conventional tourism. In the list of elements we find some interesting options, such as: dual-zone climate control, parking cameras, access and start, eight-inch touch screen multimedia system, connectivity for mobile devices, and a complete safety equipment and driving assistants .

The Toyota Proace City Verso according to Euro NCAP

In 2018, when it was launched on the market, the Toyota Proace City, and its different versions, was analyzed in the famous Euro NCAP safety test, receiving a four-star rating. It is the same result obtained for all derived models based on the EMP2 platform. The results by sections are: 9,1 in adult passenger protection, 8,1 in child passenger protection, 5,8 in vulnerability of pedestrians and 6,8 in driving assistants. These assessments are shared by all the models arising from the alliance between the Stellantis Group and Toyota.

The Toyota Proace City Verso of Km 0 and second hand

Unlike its development brothers, the Proace City Verso is not among the best-selling models in the category, it is the most unknown of the family. Throughout these years it has earned a well-deserved reputation for durability, reliability and resistance. Despite this, demand is low, finding a few units available in alternative sales channels.. In them, the Japanese model shows a depreciation rate that is at the segment standard, varying depending on the generation and condition of the vehicle.

If we take a look at the used and second-hand market, we see that prices start in amounts close to 18.000 euros As a point in favor, it should be noted that all the units for sale have very low mileage and are no older than two years. For its part, the Km 0 channel is practically null. Dealers do not accumulate stock due to low demand. The cheapest units start at 20.000 euros, which is not a very large saving compared to new factory models.

Rivals of the Toyota Proace City Verso

The industrial derived MPV market is growing in all shapes and sizes. The offer has increased, although the Proace City Verso could not be considered as one of the reference models with such residual sales. Despite this, the rivalry has increased in recent years. Partly due to the arrival of sister versions of other brands such as the Peugeot Rifter, Citroën Berlingo or Vauxhall Combo Life. To these units we can add others within the category such as Volkswagen Caddy, Renault Kangoo, Dacia Dokker, Mercedes Citan or Ford Tourneo Connect. All of them similar in configuration, sizes and prices.
