Aptera: the long-range solar car already has a launch edition and 40.000 orders

2023 will be the year of commercial debut of the Aptera. It is an unusual electric car that has the particularity of being able to recharge from the energy generated by a set of solar panels installed on its bodywork. This, in theory, will allow its users to perform daily journeys without the need to connect your battery to an external power source (i.e. plug it into an electrical network). Its manufacturer, of American origin, has already announced a release edition (Aptera Launch Edition) with more than 600 km of autonomy.

Aptera Motors ensures that it already has at least 40.000 reservations of this two-seater. It will manufacture its first units in series at the end of this year and will deliver them to its customers at the beginning of 2024. This car, which has a strange design and three wheels (two in front and one behind), has some unusual exterior dimensions in the market that give it, in combination of some elements, a extraordinary drag coefficient (0,13): measures 4,44 meters long (normal), 2,24 wide (much) and 1,36 high (little).

Its construction process is quite simple, which allows you to quickly scale your construction. This has earned the American company good financing. Also the fact of being able to install batteries of different sizes (from 25 to 100 kWh capacity) which, added to a high degree of efficiency (it is a relatively light vehicle), results in remarkable autonomies by current standards. For now, they have communicated 644 km for the only version available.

The newly announced launch edition of the Aptera features three motors (one per wheel) whose combined power is more than 200 hp (the exact figure is not known). Its benefits are high, as the company says it accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 4 seconds and that reaches a maximum speed of 163 km/h, electronically limited. In addition, they are guaranteed up to 64 km range only with the energy that solar panels are capable of receiving of the bodywork.

In their country of origin, the United States, Aptera prices that officially declared themselves a few months ago were going from $25.900 to $46.900 depending on the version, which will be defined mainly by the type of the battery. If it arrives in Spain, something that is not yet confirmed, the acquisition cost of this car could start at around 30.000 euros. In any case, it will be infinitely cheaper than Lightyear 0, another solar car that will not see the light of day having broken their company.
