The best cars that were never made

Best cars ever made

Many times we see prototypes or concept cars which are then manufactured in a very different way than what said sample model looked like. Other times there were also projects that remained on the design table and were never manufactured. Well, in this article we are going to see some of the best cars that never went into production, in some cases because they were really crazy projects. But the truth is that more than one would like to have one of them in their hands...

Bugatti 16C Galibier

Bugatti Galibier best cars

Bugatti is a French brand well known for its extremely powerful and fast sports cars. He already did crazy things like with his VW W16 engines for your Chiron Super Sport 300+, or for the Veyron. But there was a model that the brand never put into production, an almost perfect four-seater that was supposed to come out in 2009.

This project we're talking about his name was Galibier and it looked pretty much like a four-door, front-engined Veyron. It was powered by the same 16-litre W8 engine as its Veyron sibling, but pared down its four turbos to add two massive superchargers instead. This made it have a power of about 1000 hp and top speeds of almost 380 km/h. But ultimately he was left with just one concept, canceling the project to focus on developing the Chiron.

VW XL Sports

Volkswagen XL Sports

El vw xl 1 a two-seater designed to be as efficient as possible in terms of fuel consumption. It used an 800cc displacement two-cylinder diesel hybrid engine. Someone came up with a 1.2-liter V Twin from the Ducati 1199 Superleggera superbike for this XL. This achieved a vehicle of more than 200 CV and 12000 RPM, being able to go from 0-100 km/h in about 5.7 seconds and reaching top speeds of 270 km/h.

Finally it would not be put into production, and this concept would have been really expensive to produce it in mass. The standard XL 1 already it cost a lot and the Sport version could cost a real nonsense if we count the necessary titanium parts, carbon fiber, etc.

Jaguar c-x75

Jaguar CX75 best cars

In 2010 there was also another one of those concepts that would not come to fruition. This time from the hand of the British brand. This Jaguar C-X75 it looked pretty good, and a few versions powered by different engines would be made. One with two diesel-powered gas turbine engines that generated electricity to drive its four electric motors. They achieved powers of about 800 CV, enough to reach up to 330 km/h at the top and accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just over 2.5 seconds.

Then Jaguar abandoned the turbine engines and opted for a 1.6-litre turbocharged and supercharged hybrid engine with 870PS and top speeds of around 350km/h. However, Jaguar finally decided to cancel the project in 2010. However, there are some cars produced that were used in the 007 Bond movie 'Spectre', similar to the original concept, but with an old V8 instead of the hybrid system.

Lamborghini Stock

Lamborghini is more comfortable building supercars and huge SUVs, as has been proven. But what you may not know is that he was almost on the verge of building his own four-seater GT in 2008. The concept was called Lamgorghini Rapier and it had a 5.2-liter V10 engine and four-wheel drive system, and positioned in the front instead of the rear.

The truth is that it looked like a pretty nice car, with a pretty subtle design, but the Italian firm would decide to bury this concept. Now it is stored in a drawer and we could never see it on the streets...

Ford GT90

ford gt90 best cars

The Ford GT you already know that it is a model inspired by the iconic GT40 racing car. However, perhaps you did not know that before this there were other concepts. In 1995, Ford designed the GT90, a kaleidoscopic vision of the ultimate supercar powered by a 12-liter V5,9 engine and four turbos. This engine generated about 740 horsepower, with top speeds of more than 400 km/h. That is, like a Veyron, but 10 years earlier.

All a marvel for many fans of speed and of these cars, but there was a problem: the engine was heating up so much so that Ford had to install special ceramic tiles in the engine compartment to prevent the body from melting, a ceramic similar to that used in the space shuttle to prevent it from burning during re-entry into the atmosphere. That is why the engineers decided not to put this vehicle into production.

nissan idx

Nissan IDX best cars

And we move on to another amazing concept, this time from Nissan. A Nissan IDx should have been launched in 2013 but would not go into production. It was a model that should compete with the BMW 2 Series, but it did not look like a modern two-seater coupe, instead Nissan decided to use a retro design of its bodywork.

They also installed under the hood a turbocharged 1.6-liter gasoline engine with more than 202 HP of power, being able to accelerate from 0-100 in about 7 seconds. Everything seemed fantastic, it even appeared in some car video games, so you can drive it virtually, since you won't be able to do it in reality...

GT by Citroen

GT by Citroen

A Citroen GT? Well yes, although it would not come to pass, in 2008 there was an attempt by the French firm to join the market for this type of sports car. It was a concept known as GT by Citroën. It sounds pretty weird living off a brand especially dedicated to utility vehicles, but that's how it was.

This kind of futuristic spaceship it was made to promote the video game Gran Turismo 5. In this digital version for this title, 4 electric motors were used that produced about 790 CV of power, but the actual car that was built for the show used a Ford V8 engine of about 660 CV.

VW W12 Nardo

volkswagen nardo

We passed 2002 and a concept that was called VW W12 Nardo. The idea? Well imagine if VW had made a mini Bugatti Veyron, well that was this mid-engined supercar. Ultimately it would not come to pass, despite having set a 24-hour world land speed record by driving one of these at full throttle all day. The average speed was 320 km/h, being able to cover almost 8000 km of distance.

It sounds great on the table, but ultimately VW decided against it. This vehicle, had it been manufactured, would have come with a W12 engine with 5.6 liters and more than 600 HP of power, managing to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in about 3.5 seconds and reach top speeds of almost 360 km/h. That would have been the fastest car made by VW, but it only stopped at one would have been…

Range Rover Range Stormer

ranger rover best cars

The supercharged Range Rover Sport SVR V8 wasn't the first fast Range Rover. There was another earlier concept, in 2004, it was called Range Stormer. It was based on the standard Range Rover Sport, but Land Rover got rid of the two rear doors and used a supercharged 8-litre V4,6 engine.

The wheels of this vehicle were also "tuned", using the 22-inch ones, in addition to placing scissor-style doors like those on some supercars, they used an eye-catching bright orange colour, and the result would be a fascinating car that would top out at 290 km/h. Unfortunately for car lovers, Land Rover would not make it...

Lamborghini Asterion

Lamborghini Asterion

Finally, we return to the transalpine brand. The new Lamborghini Sian is the brand's first hybrid production car, but its first hybrid was the concept car called Lamborghini Asterion from 2014. It was supposed to be more like a GT concept, with a more luxurious and spacious interior. However, it seems that everything went wrong and he canceled his project to focus on building the Urus, his SUV.

It should also be noted that this concept used an Aventador chassis, but they replaced the V12 with a V10 engine of just over 610 hp Like the Hurricane. Then, the space left by this more compact engine was used to install two electric motors that were capable of generating more than 300 HP of power. All this was worth this concept to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in about 3 seconds, and reach top speeds of about 297 km/h.

Conclusion

Sometimes the concept cars or the craziest projects of car brands are the most liked and attract the public. We do not understand very well why they are not finally launched on the market. It is true that they have teams working to see what is viable, what may be too expensive, what would not be successful in the market, etc. But who has not been surprised by the concept car that the firms show at motor events and then is disappointed by the street model that finally comes out? That happens many times, and it is that sometimes motor fans demand more radical things than what they finally dare to launch on the market. There should be some more daring and innovative brands to create extreme models. Maybe it wasn't that crazy...
