Everytime that BMW brings to the world a new generation of the M4, the world beholds the next standard in coupé sportiness. The BMW M4 born as a split from its parent model, the BMW M3. In 2014 BMW decides to divide the range, separating the conventional bodies from the coupés and cabrio lines. It is at that moment when the first BMW 4 Series was born, which would later give life to the first M4.

Since then, only one generation of the sporty coupé has accompanied us, the BMW M4 F82. In 2017 it undergoes a slight aesthetic, mechanical and equipment renovation, but it is in 2020 when a completely new generation comes to light, the BMW M4 G82. This does not mean losing an iota of drama and ferocity that has always accompanied him. On the contrary, the new generation brings with it more performance.

Undoubtedly the most commented and criticized of the M4 G82 is its appearance. With the launch of BMW Serie 4 the German brand takes a step forward in the development of a new design philosophy. In the summer of 2022, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the BMW M division, the special version M4 CSL is launched, a historical designation that means: Coupé Sport Lightweith (Sports and Light Coupé).

Technical characteristics of the BMW M4

When developing the M4, everything starts from a 3 Series sedan. The platform used in both models is the same, the CLAR platform that we can also see in other units of the house such as BMW Serie 5, albeit in an extended format. From there, extensive changes are made to increase stiffness, which is necessary to meet high performance expectations.

The BMW M4 will be marketed in two different bodies. On the one hand, a two-door hardtop coupe. On the other, a convertible with a retractable hard top and two doors. In both cases the external dimensions are identical. 4,79 meters long, 1,89 meters wide and 1,39 meters high. The hood of the convertible version is capable of activating up to speeds of 50 Km/h and it takes 18 seconds to perform the complete operation.

To the outer dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,86 meters. This means that its cabin is limited to four passengers in a 2 + 2 arrangement. There is no possibility of including a fifth member because the rear bench is not capable of it. As far as load volume is concerned, the M4 Coupé sports a minimum cargo volume of 440 liters, while the M4 Convertible reduces it to 300 or 385 liters depending on whether the roof is folded or not.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the BMW M4

The BMW M4 is synonymous with performance and sportiness. Although much is said about aesthetics, the true meaning of the model lies in the mechanics. As usual, BMW presents its most famous architecture, completely revised and updated not only to deliver more power, but also to reduce consumption and be more efficient. At the moment the Germans rule out the introduction of any electrified scheme.

The M4 uses a 2.993 cubic centimeter inline six-cylinder engine with double overhead camshafts and a turbocharger. Currently the M4 has two power levels: M4 Competition and M4 CSLBoth with the same engine. The access model offers 510 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque, being able to divert power to the front axle or distribute it, optionally, to all four wheels through xDrive traction.

As a tribute to the BMW M division, the limited edition is presented in the summer of 2022 M4 CSL only 1.000 units worldwide. In addition to a particular design, the engine injects more performance: 551 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. All the power is sent to the rear axle, showing a top speed of 307 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3,7 seconds.

Equipment of the BMW M4

When it comes to composing the interior of the BMW M4, the designers have not broken their heads. The structure and presentation of the elements is the same to which we are already accustomed. It is the same one used in Series 3, and that means that we are faced with a well-presented interior in its finishes and materials. However, a more sporty touch is missing, where nothing powerfully attracts attention except some typical racing optional front bucket seats.

As has always happened with the M4, there is not a correctly staggered range of equipment. Unlike conventional models, it is only available a general finish, which will undergo small modifications if we opt for the Competition version. As usual, a wide degree of interior personalization is allowed, where exclusive BMW Individual elements can be opted for.

As far as equipment is concerned, the list of items is impressive. It is worth noting the presence of an extensive safety program and driving aids. To that program we must add many more elements such as laser headlights, carbon roof, keyless entry and start, connected services, digital instrument panel, connectivity for mobile devices and much more. A portion of the optional items focus on improving performance.

The BMW M4 according to Euro NCAP

When assessing safety against impacts or accidents, the BMW M4 offers five Euro NCAP safety stars, sharing the ratings with the rest of the 4 Series range. The results by section are as follows: 9,7 in adult occupant protection, 8,3 in child occupant protection, 9,3 in vulnerability of pedestrians and 7,2 in work of driving assistants.

The BMW M4 of Km 0 and second hand

In its short life the BMW M4 has managed to carve out a well-deserved popularity among lovers of four wheels and high performance. Although it has only been on the market for six years, their degree of desirability is so high that many want to get their services. The high cost of new units causes many customers to opt for the secondary markets, where the units have a very low depreciation value.

on the second hand market the most accessible units are for sale for a minimum price of 38.000 euros for models of the F82 generation of the year 2014 with less than one hundred thousand accumulated kilometers. In the Km 0 channel, the offer is very limited. On the one hand, the appearance of a new generation, and on the other hand because the dealers do not accumulate much stock due to the low demand for the product.

Rivals of the BMW M4

The performance and features that the M4 sports are worthy of the most demanding sports cars in the world. It is a small but very demanding market where the rivals present have extensive experience and high popularity. The most direct rivals of the BMW M4 are: Audi RS 5 Coupe, Mercedes AMG C 63 coupe and Porsche 911. The German quartet takes almost all the prominence of a highly desired sector where they monopolize most of the sales in the old continent.
