The compact segment continues to be one of the most important in the industry despite the unstoppable push of SUVs. All the brands fight in it, and even more so within the general category. the Kia ceed It is the commitment of the Korean brand, a product that little by little has become "Europeanized", gaining an interesting appeal.

It was launched in 2007. It could be considered that it is one of the youngest compact cars on the European market. It was a completely new product twinned with the Hyundai i30, the twin option of the Korean conglomerate. However, the first time we met the Ceed it was not like now, since back then his official name was Cee'd.

That illogical final apostrophe disappeared with the arrival of the latest generation, officially presented at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. A product that has reached maturity in 2021 thanks to an interesting restyling. Thanks to this, it has become one of the most sensible and varied alternatives today, as it has three possible bodies: compact, family (Tourer) and Shooting Brake (Proceed).

Technical characteristics of the KIA Ceed

Korean brands have evolved a lot since their first models arrived in our market. The KIA Ceed rests on the J6 platform, shared with the i30. A state-of-the-art scalar structure that has been fine-tuned by Albert Biermann, who a few years ago was the chief engineer, and founding father, of the BMW Motorsport division.

The various bodies of the Ceed show us different sizes. The compact reaches 4,31 meters long 1,8 meters wide and 1,45 meters high. The family, the KIA Ceed Tourer extends to 4,6 meters long, 1,8 meters wide and 1,46 meters high. Finally, the KIA Proceed with its elegant Shooting Brake body has dimensions of 4,6 meters long, 1,8 meters wide and 1,42 meters high.

Despite the variations, they all offer the same wheelbase: 2,65 meters. Its interior space is approved for a maximum of five passengers. The load capacities are different depending on the body. The KIA Ceed offers a minimum trunk of 395 liters for the compact, 594 for the Proceed and 625 for the KIA Ceed Tourer. All these figures grow when the second row of seats is folded down.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the KIA Ceed

The mechanical offer of the KIA Ceed is wide and varied, although not all bodies show the same units. As befits these times, they include combustion solutions, diesel and gasoline, MHEV units, and also plug-in hybrids. In addition to sports units that are collected under the umbrella of the acronym GT.

The range starts with 1.0 T-GDi petrol with 100 horsepower of power that always comes associated with a six-speed manual gearbox. That same block of three cylinders and one liter is used for the version 1.0 T-GDi 120 horsepower (optionally with MHEV system). A six-speed manual transmission is fitted as standard, but a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional. From there, the range with four-cylinder engines, MHEV technology and ECO label, is introduced. First the 136-horsepower diesel and later the 160-horsepower and 1.5-liter gasoline.

The top of the range are Ceed GT and Proceed GT. They mount a 1.6 T-GDi gasoline block that raises power to 204 horses. It is always accompanied by a seven-speed DCT automatic transmission. On the contrary, the most efficient of all is the plug-in hybrid, only available in the Ceed Tourer family body. It offers 140 horsepower, 265 Nm of torque, and electric autonomy approved in the WLTP cycle of 50 kilometers.

Equipment of the KIA Ceed

It must be recognized that KIA has managed to do a great job inside the Ceed. From doors to inside It is shown as a compact superior to the average, both in technology and in qualities. Pleasant-touch surfaces are combined with correct plastics that, in general, raise the sense of quality perceived by all occupants.

As is customary in the firm, the equipment is distributed in very closed packages that make the purchase process easier for the user. From smallest to largest endowment we find: Concept, Drive, Tech, GT Line and GT. In addition to those we can find the eMotion level, exclusive to the PHEV variant of the Ceed Tourer. Each level mainly alters the system load, although there are also alterations in finishes, qualities and design.

Technology is a decisive purchase factor in the C segment, and therefore the Ceed provides its customers with many interesting options, and improved from 2021. Elements such as: LED headlights, digital instrumentation, multimedia system with 10,25-inch touch screen, parking camera, navigator, connectivity for mobile devices, sunroof and a complete team of driving assistants and security systems should be highlighted.

Test KIA Ceed in video

The KIA Ceed according to Euro NCAP

In 2019 Euro NCAP tested the safety of the third generation of the KIA Ceed. After the crash tests, the European evaluation body awarded it four of its five safety stars.. The results by sections were as follows: 8,8 in adult passenger protection, 8,5 in child passenger protection, 5,2 in pedestrian vulnerability, and 6,8 in driving assistants. The results obtained are valid for the three bodies since they all share technologies and platform. These values are still valid in the 2021 bodies as there are no changes in the structure of the car.

The Kia Ceed of Km 0 and second hand

The KIA Ceed or, rather, the Cee'd, was the first model of the firm designed for the European market. A compact that has always garnered discreet but correct sales figures. Throughout these years, a good reputation has been built for durability and behavior, something that has ended up affecting the alternative sales channels, where it shows an average depreciation of 30%. This data is very similar to that offered by direct competition models.

If we take a look at the second-hand market we see how the cheapest units date from the first generation (2006 – 2011). Prices start in amounts close to 2.000 euros for gasoline models with more than 150 thousand kilometers traveled. In the Km 0 market, the offer is very varied depending on bodywork and engines. The most expensive units are those corresponding to the most complete versions of the KIA Proceed.

KIA Ceed Rivals

The KIA Ceed is part of one of the most popular and competitive segments of the market. The list of rivals is very long and varied. All brands offer at least one possible alternative, and many of them within the general segment. The natural enemies of the Korean are: Renault Mégane, SEAT Leon, Ford Focus, Peugeot 308, Citroën C4, Toyota Corolla, FIAT Type, Mazda3, Opel Astra, skoda scala, and the almighty Volkswagen Golf. All of them are similar in characteristics, although the KIA is the only one that offers three different body solutions.
