El Toyota Yaris It is the Japanese giant's bet to dominate the utility segment. The first time we saw the Yaris was in 1999. That first edition was made up of three different bodies; hatchback, coupé and sedan, however, only one of them reached the European market, in three and five-door format.

In full 2020 Toyota has presented a new generation, the fourth that reaches the roads. An increasingly popular model for its hybrid technology, highly demanded in urban spaces where the Yaris can access without problems of restrictions or low emission zones, since once again it certifies the ECO label of the DGT.

For this new edition, the Toyota Yaris presents a completely different look than in the past. A radical change of style that focuses on an appearance more to European taste, one of the most important markets for the Japanese utility. Unlike past editions, the fourth comes in a single format, although in two possible bodies, five doors for the normal versions, and three doors for the new Toyota GR Yaris.

Technical characteristics of the Toyota Yaris

Toyota Yaris 2020

When we say the Yaris is brand new, we mean it from head to toe. That implies a new platform. TNGA architecture (Toyota New Global Architecture) It allows the new Yaris to have the most advanced technologies of the house, as well as providing a better driving experience and access to more technology.

For this edition the Toyota Yaris changes its exterior dimensions. 3,94 meters long, 1,74 meters wide and 1,5 meters high. Very good levels for urban environments, its main range of action. To these dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,56 meters long, which translates into a passenger compartment designed for a maximum of five occupants.

As far as load capacity is concerned, the new outer dimensions allow you to enjoy a greater trunk, with a minimum capacity of 286 liters. This amount can be extended over a thousand liters if we lower the second row of seats in a 60:40 ratio. These measures are cut considerably when talking about the GR Yaris version, a model more focused on performance.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Toyota Yaris

Toyota TNGA Platform

Since the last generation, the Yaris got rid of all mechanics that were not hybrid. Toyota bets everything on sustainable mobility, and therefore the conventional Yaris will enjoy only hybrid versions. The only exception will be the GR Yaris, which in contrast will only have a mechanical variant, a high-performance gasoline engine.

The fourth generation of Toyota's hybrid system employs a three-cylinder gasoline engine with 1.5 liters of displacement. It develops 116 horsepower and a maximum of 120 Nm of torque. Coupled to the engine we have a lithium-ion battery and an additional electric motor that delivers 59 kW of power and 141 Nm of torque, being able to move the vehicle 100% electrically for a range of approximately two kilometres.

The most performant of the house is the GR Racing. The GR family continues to grow after the arrival of the Toyota GR Supra. In this case, the Yaris is equipped with a three cylinders and 1.618 cubic centimeters. Develops a total of 261 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 5,5 seconds and features a specially adapted set-up with Torsen-type differentials, modified suspension and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.

Equipment of the Toyota Yaris

The urban utility segment has never stood out for its extensive equipment and high quality. However, manufacturers have taken a step forward and the latest batch of models has better finishes and technologies, as is the case with the Toyota Yaris. It presents an improved cabin in materials and adjustments, raising the sensation of perceived quality compared to the previous generation.

When setting up the Toyota Yaris, five equipment lines are available: S Edition, Business Plus, Active Tech, Style and GR Sport. The appearance is very similar between one and the other, focusing the changes on details such as bumpers, wheels and colors, being able to opt for two-tone paints in the higher levels. The GR Sport finish is situated in a middle ground between the common range and the GR Yaris. Particular aesthetics with a specific dynamic configuration.

As far as equipment is concerned, the qualitative and quantitative leap of the Toyota Yaris has been very large. It is worth noting the presence of LED headlights, keyless entry and start, connectivity for mobile devices, Head-Up Display, wireless charger, partially digital instrument cluster, and multimedia system with touch screen up to eight inches, among others. It also highlights the presence of a wide range of safety elements and driving aids.

The results by sections are: 86 out of 100 in adult passenger protection, 81 out of 100 in child passenger protection, 78 out of 100 in pedestrian vulnerability and 85 out of 100 in driving assistants.

The Toyota Yaris of Km 0 and second hand

The Toyota Yaris is one of the best-selling urban cars in Spain. Since the first generation, it has earned a reputation for being a solid and reliable model. Thanks to that, its depreciation is one of the best in the segment, standing at around 24 percent. Second-hand and second-hand markets have a wide variety of options, with the Km 0 market being more limited due to the current generation change.

If we take a look at the second-hand or occasion channel, we see that the cheapest units are those corresponding to the first generation, year 1999, with gasoline mechanics. These units have a starting price of less than 1.000 euros. On the other side of the scale are the third-generation hybrid units, where estimated prices are around 6.000 euros for units after 2015.

Although it is not the most popular segment of the market, the urban utility niche is of great importance to brands. All are committed to introducing at least one model in the segment, and therefore the Toyota Yaris must face some very tough competition. Its most immediate rivals are: Honda Jazz, Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, Seat Ibiza, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i20, KIA Rio, Opel Corsa, and Volkswagen Polo among others. Very few of those rivals have a hybrid scheme like the Yaris, although more and more models are joining the hybrid car.
