in its origins DS it was a division of the brand itself Citroën. For years they have been in charge of creating the most luxurious and exclusive models of the French house. Now, since 2009, the work is the same, but instead of being a division within the brand, it is a separate firm. A new range with a clear focus on the SUV market, where the DS 7 stands out above the rest.

Until now we have known various models signed by DS, such as the DS 3, DS 4 or DS 5. However, those models were nothing more than derivative products of the Citroën C3 and the Citroën C4, for instance. That caused the image to be very similar and not very daring. In 2014 that rule is fractured by creating its own DS brand. From then on, each product will be distinctly different, with a more refined touch and a more "French" design.

The DS 7 Crossback has the honor of becoming the first 100% DS product. Its commercial launch occurs in 2018, receiving a considerable update in the summer of 2022. Among the many novelties included, one of the most outstanding is the disappearance of the Crossback surname that until then accompanies all the SUV units of the house, such as the DS 3 Crossback.

Technical characteristics of the DS 7

The DS 7 is the first model of the premium firm of the PSA Group designed from scratch, that is, it is not derived from any other model of the consortium, although it does use technologies and developments from the PSA conglomerate. Under its elegant body is hidden the EMP2 platform, the same that we can see in many other products such as the Peugeot 3008, or the Opel Grandland.

Thanks to this platform we can talk about it as a compact SUV whose exterior dimensions take us to the 4,57 meters long, 1,89 meters wide and 1,62 meters high. To all these dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,74 meters. Enough battle to homologate an interior space for a maximum of five passengers, where the three rear ones enjoy a fair but correct habitability for the segment.

The DS 7 takes advantage of its dimensions very well and thanks to that it has a very good load capacity. The trunk formalizes a minimum volume of 555 liters, expandable to 1.752 liters when the second row seats are folded down completely in a 60:40 ratio. To finish off the dimensions section, mention a free height with respect to the ground of 19 centimeters. A correct measure that does not give him special skills for the field.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the DS 7

The DS brand positions its models within the premium category. That doesn't just mean more attention to interior craftsmanship, it also showcases a range of mid- and high-performance engines. The engine portfolio is wide and varied, undergoing a profound review in the 2022 renewal. The range is structured in a diesel version and in three plug-in hybrid units with the DGT ZERO label.

The family starts with the only existing diesel, the BlueHDi 130 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. From then on, all units have electrified systems. All of them have the same plug-in hybrid structure with a new 14,2 kWh gross capacity battery that allows autonomy of up to 65 kilometers in the WLTP cycle. For recharging, a low-power system is chosen, up to 7,4 kW in alternating current, which allows the entire battery to be recovered in just 2 hours.

There are three PHEV versions of the DS 7: Hybrid 200, Hybrid 300 and Hybrid 360. The last two incorporate two electric motors, the second of them on the rear axle in order to enjoy total traction. The Hybrid 360 is a novelty in the range, being one of the first models of the Stellantis Group to be able to enjoy said mechanics. Throughout the range we find automatic gearboxes.

DS 7 Equipment

Inside the doors, the DS demonstrates the excellent craftsmanship of the French luxury firm. A very well presented cabin, although not very ergonomic, with soft materials with a pleasant touch that increase the feeling of quality and comfort for all occupants. Added to this craftsmanship is a lot of technology, exclusive technology that positions it as one of the flagships of the house along with the sedan. DS 9.

The equipment possibilities of the are very wide, and it offers systems that only premium models in the category can match. The range is divided into different trim levels: Chic, So Chic, Performance Line, Performance Line+ and La Première.. In them, not only better equipment is present, each level implies a different style for the exterior with exclusive details and elements that provide more elegance or more sportiness as desired.

As far as equipment is concerned, there is much to highlight: Full LED headlights, sunroof, leather and Alcantara seats, three-zone climate control, heated and massage front seats, night vision, Head-Up Display, 360-degree camera, digital instrument cluster, 12-inch touch panel multimedia system, connectivity for mobile devices and more. Finally, highlight a wide range of driving assistants and the Active Scan Suspension system that increases ride comfort.

The DS 7 according to Euro NCAP

Euro NCAP has subjected the DS 7 Crossback to its demanding impact test in 2017 giving it the highest possible score, 5 stars. In any case, the different tests have been passed with the following notes. Protection for adult and child occupants in the event of an impact is 91 and 87 percent, respectively. In the event of a collision with pedestrians or cyclists, it registers a protection of 73 percent. Finally, in terms of active driving aids, it obtains a remarkable 76 percent. These valuations are still valid after the 2022 edition as no modifications were made to the structure of the vehicle.

The DS 7 of Km 0 and second hand

Although it has been on the market for a relatively short time, the DS 7 is off to a good commercial start. Many drivers want to get their services, although many of them reject the purchase due to the high cost of sale. That encourages secondary sales channels, where the French SUV shows a slightly higher depreciation percentage than its premium rivals.

If we take a look at the used market we see that there are many options available. It stands out that all of them have an automatic gearbox and that they do not have excessive mileage. Prices start from figures close to 24.000 euros for models between 2018 and 2022 with diesel mechanics and access finish. The Km 0 channel also has a good offer, many different options that in some cases have interesting discounts. In this case, all the units are prior to the restyling of 2022.

Rivals of the DS 7

Due to exterior size, the largest DS SUV falls into the medium SUV segment, however, and despite the fact that its price is not a bargain, is at the height of the C-SUV of premium firms. Taking into account its position in the market, among its main rivals we can highlight the Listen Q3, BMW X1, Jaguar E Pace, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque o Mercedes-Benz GLA. If we mention other products outside the premium spectrum, it would be worth mentioning the Hyundai Tucson, Volkswagen Tiguan, Mazda CX-5, SEAT Ateca and his brother, the 3008.
