Although the minivan segment is not highly coveted today, the compact segment still has a certain commercial pull. The Mercedes B-Class is the representative in said market of the German firm. It was originally launched on the market in 2005, and today it reaches the third of its generations, the last of which was presented in 2019 during the Paris Motor Show.

Today, SUVs colonize most of the classic commercial segments and the MPV or minivan segment is the one that has suffered the most from this change in trend. However, they are still a excellent family alternative, practical in your day to day and versatile for when the needs demand it.

The Mercedes B-Class has changed handsomely for its third generation. A change that is influenced by function at the service of form. His lines are not the most attractive of Mercedes, but without a doubt thanks to the new house design philosophy the overall look of this compact MPV has been greatly improved. In 2023 it receives a slight facelift, focused on improving the mechanical range with minimal aesthetic changes.

Technical characteristics of the Mercedes B-Class

Under that body the Class B hides the platform the same platform that hides the Mercedes A-Class, Mercedes CLA or Mercedes GLA. It is called MFA2 architecture, and has been designed to be lighter, more functional and also to adapt to new front-wheel drive mechanical schemes, including plug-in hybrid solutions.

This modular platform allows its measurements to be scaled depending on the needs, and in the case of the Mercedes B-Class, it confers exterior measurements of 4,42 meters long, 1,8 meters wide and 1,56 meters high. To these measures we must add a wheelbase of 2,72 meters. Distance that, although it does not allow to accommodate seven passengers, it does allow five to travel comfortably.

As a good minivan, the Class B allows a wide and flexible interior layout. Its second row of seats has individual bench seats that can be folded and moved longitudinally to adapt to the needs of the moment. Its carrying capacity is high. 445 liters minimum capacity and 1.540 liters of maximum capacity.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Mercedes B-Class

The fact that the Mercedes B-Class adopts the platform of the entire Mercedes A-Class means that it also makes the same mechanical portfolio as it, at least for the most part, including the 2023 renewal focused on including MHEV versions with an ECO label for the entire spectrum. As it is a family model where Functionality over performance, the Class B opts for the most modest range of powers, diesel, gasoline and plug-in hybrid units.

The offer consists of three diesel variants, two gasoline and a plug-in hybrid. The diesel range is made up of the B 180 d, the B 200 d and the B 220 d with 116, 150 and 190 hp respectively. The supply of gasoline is made up of B 180 and B 200 with 136 and 163 hp respectively. The access units come standard with a six-speed manual transmission, while the most powerful units do so with a seven-speed automatic transmission.

The most efficient model in the range is the Mercedes B-Class plug-in hybrid that comes with the name B 250e. It boasts a gasoline engine that is coupled to an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 15,6 kWh. By power it is the most performance of the range, 218 horses, also managing to homologate a 100% electric autonomy of 77 kilometers, enough to certify the DGT ECO label.

Equipment of the Mercedes B-Class

When we talk about equipment we usually refer to a wide range of possibilities and options, as happens in the Mercedes B-Class. The German firm is recognized as a premium brand and that means that it delivers a wide list of standard and optional elements. It also highlights its quality, although unlike other models of the house, in this case opts more for practicality as it is a family model.

Once again, the Class B offers the same number of systems and technology as the Class A, and that is worth it to be one of the best-equipped minivans on the market, perhaps the most. Mercedes puts up for sale different finishing lines or aesthetic packages with which we managed to modify the general appearance of the minivan, including a sports line that gives it a little more character.

If we talk about equipment, there is a lot to refer to. LED headlights, keyless entry and start, sunroof, leather upholstery, electric tailgate, 360-degree camera, virtual reality navigator, digital instrument cluster, induction charger, mobile device connectivity, Wi-Fi, Head Up Display and a wide catalog of active safety elements and driving assistants.

Mercedes B-Class according to EuroNCAP

In a Mercedes we can always highlight safety, but if we talk about a cut model as familiar as the Class B minivan, we can do it to a greater degree. Euro NCAP has tested the security capabilities of the model and has determined that it is the safest in its category. In addition to obtaining the five Euro NCAP stars, the Mercedes B-Class gets excellent marks in the adult and child passenger protection sections with ratings of 96 and 90 out of 100 respectively. These valuations are still valid after the 2023 renewal as no changes were made to the structure of the vehicle.

The Mercedes B-Class of Km 0 and Second Hand

The Mercedes B-Class has in its favor that it has been on the market for a few years and that it accumulates three generations. This alone is more than enough for there to be a good number of units for sale in the second-hand and second-hand channels. The offer includes first-generation models with prices of around 2.000 and 3.000 euros, and more recent models, mainly second-generation models with a minimum price of over 10.000 euros for the cheapest models.

Despite being a Mercedes, the depreciation percentage is high because we are talking about a segment in the doldrums. In the Km 0 market we also find many units for sale. It's a quick-fit car, and this encourages dealers to build up stock to give it a quick outlet for buyers looking for an attractive deal, even though prices are close to factory.

Rivals of the Mercedes B-Class

You have to take into account a number of factors when talking about rivals to the Mercedes B-Class. Compact minivans, mid-premium cut and with a starting price of around 30.000 euros. Taking this into account, the list of rivals is quite reduced, and in fact the most direct are the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and Volkswagen Touran. The rest of the units in the segment are out of range for price, lower than any of these three.

Prices of the Mercedes B-Class

Although we are talking about a premium brand, the main client of the B-Class rewards the functionality and the contained price. For this reason, the compact minivan is one of the most economical models of the firm. In the cheapest of cases the Mercedes Class B has a starting price of 35.167 euros for variant B 180 d with base finish. The most expensive of all is the B 250 and plug-in hybrid with the DGT ZERO label. Its sale price starts at 45.994 euros, without offers or promotions.
