The second generation of Opel Insignia It is the latest model that the German firm has developed before General Motors sold its shareholding to the PSA Group. In this way, until it is replaced in 2024 by another generation, it will continue to be sold with technology from the American conglomerate.

The first generation hit the market in 2008 to replace the veteran and reviled Opel Vectra, assuming a real bestseller for Opel. In fact, in the more than 10 years that it has been on sale, it has accumulated more than one million units produced. An excellent figure considering the situation of the saloon segment.

The second iteration of the Insignia arrived in 2017, marking a major step forward for the brand and the segment. A remarkable change that has been updated for 2020. A small facelift in the middle of the commercial cycle that introduces slight modifications to the aesthetic levels of equipment and engines. Finally, in December 2022, the Insignia ceases production without leaving a successor.

Technical characteristics of the Opel Insignia

The Opel Insignia is developed on the General Motors Epsilon 2 platform. Thanks to the use of this base, it solves the main problem that the previous model had, a final weight on the scale higher than the average for the segment, which compromised performance and consumption. In the future, when the development is 100% PSA, the Insignia will share the EMP2 platform with the Peugeot 508.

The Opel Insignia is marketed in two different bodies. On the one hand, the four-door sedan called Grand Sport, and on the other, the familiar version called Sports Tourer. Due to their measurements, they are located in segment D. 4,9 meters long, 1,86 meters wide and 1,45 meters high for the Grand Tourer. 4,99 meters long, 1,86 meters wide and 1,5 meters high for the Sports Tourer. The two enjoy the same battle, 2,83 meters.

Such a wheelbase translates into very generous interior space for up to five passengers. By having two different bodies, there are two possible trunk volumes. In the least of cases, the Insignia enjoys a load capacity of 490 liters (Grand Sports), and at best 560 liters (Sport Tourer). Both figures can be increased considerably by folding down the second row of seats.

One of the most significant changes in the restyling of 2020 has come in the mechanical section. Because of an outdated platform and not intended for electrification, the Opel Insignia cannot enjoy electrified mechanical versions. The current offer consists of two diesel variants and one gasoline.

The mechanical portfolio starts with the 1.5 horsepower 122D. This access version can mount a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox. The next step is in 2.0D 174 horsepower. The gasoline option is postulated as the most functional. The 2.0 horsepower 200T It always comes mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Above those units we find the GSi range. In this case, the same engine is mounted as before, a turbocharged two-liter four-cylinder that stretches its performance to the 230 horsepower. It uses a nine-speed automatic gearbox that transmits all the power of the engine to all four wheels through an all-wheel drive scheme. Available in both Sports Tourer and Grand Tourer body styles.

The range of equipment for the Opel Insignia for the Spanish market is structured around four finishes. From least to greatest technological endowment and infotainment are: Edition, Business Edition, GS Line, Business Elegance y GS Line Plus. In 2020 the jacket version, the so-called Country Tourer, is lost due to the low sales volume presented.

The main items of equipment that the Access Edition version incorporates are the Opel OnStar system, electric parking brake, dual-zone climate control, hands-free access and starting, cruise control, traffic signal detector or infotainment system with 7-inch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In the higher versions, the Insignia's endowment is enriched with elements such as 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic high beam control, rain sensor, driver's seat with six-way adjustment and lumbar adjustment, parking sensors, LED matrix headlights, electric and heated exterior mirrors with lighting for driver and passenger.

If we take a look at the second-hand channel, the most affordable units date from the first generation, years 2009 and 2010. In that case, you can find offers with a starting price around 1.500 euros. Since we are facing a change of units due to the 2020 restyling, the Km 0 market is limited exclusively to models prior to that year. There are hardly any units left for sale since the model has been discontinued.

The Opel Insignia fits into the hard-fought segment D, that of the average sedans. However, due to the positioning that the German firm has given it in the market, it rivals models belonging to the general and premium sphere. Some of the main rivals against which the Insignia are Ford Mondeo, Alfa Romeo GiuliaBMW Serie 3Mazda 6Volkswagen Passat, Audi A4, Peugeot 508, Kia Optima, Hyundai i40, Renault talisman o Toyota Avensis. Against these, it has the advantage of being a more affordable product, but on the contrary, its experience is a drag on sales.

Although the segment no longer enjoys the same strengths as in the past, midsize sedans are still a great bet for many buyers. The starting price of the Opel Insignia is 28.900 euros, without offers or promotions. That price corresponds to a Grand Sport model with mechanics and access finish. In the case of the Sports Tourer body, the minimum starting price for the same configuration is 30.400 euros, without offers or promotions.
