With the advent of Tesla Model Y, the American manufacturer completes its backbone of models. The range made up of Tesla Model S, Tesla Model X, Tesla Model 3 and Model Y becomes the sales cornerstone. In addition to it, secondary products will be launched for a more capricious customer.
It is a compact model halfway between a Model X and a Model 3. It borrows many concepts from the latter, although it exposes them in a more familiar format as does the SUV-MPV of the house. We could say that the Model y is a Model 3 with a minivan body and we wouldn't be far off the mark either.
Its launch took place in mid-March 2019. Its first commercial foray will take place in the local market, that is, the United States. For the Spanish market the launch takes place in mid-2021 with models of Chinese production for a later introduction of models produced in the Gigafactory that Tesla opens in Berlin in early 2022.
Technical characteristics of the Tesla Model Y
Unsurprisingly, the Model Y sits on the same platform that powers the Model 3. In this particular case, it's been slightly modified to deal with heavier weight and slightly larger size. The Tesla Model Y can present a configuration of five or seven seats. The two additional seats are part of the optional equipment, they fold on the floor of the trunk and have an additional cost of 3.200 euros.
In terms of its size, the Model Y is perfectly nestled in the D segment. 4,75 meters long, 1,92 meters wide and 1,62 meters high make up its outer dimensions. To these dimensions must be added a wheelbase of 2,89 meters. Just two centimeters more than a Model 3, but thanks to them it has a better interior space, with a more comfortable rear row.
Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Tesla Model Y
When it comes to mobilizing the Tesla Model Y, the mechanical range is supported by single-motor solutions or dual-motor systems. In this way we can have rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The range is divided into a total of four versions, two with all-wheel drive with dual motors and two with rear-wheel drive and a single motor..
The access unit, called Model Y of Standard Autonomy and rear-wheel drive, it features a rear engine that develops a maximum of 299 horsepower. Presents a estimated electric range of 455 kilometers, with a BYD LFP battery with a capacity of 60 kWh. The other rear-wheel drive unit is the Long Range RWD Model Y. It raises the power to 347 horsepower with an official range of 600 kilometers in the WLTP cycle. The size of its battery reaches up to 75 kWh capacity.
Dual motor units use that same battery, finding two levels of performance: Model Y Great Autonomy and Performance. They sport two engines, one at the front with 200 horsepower and another at the rear with 299 and 320 horsepower respectively. The total power of the set is 514 horses for the Long Range version, and 534 horses for the Performance version. In this case the autonomy approved in the WLTP cycle ranges between 514 kilometers for the Performance, and 533 kilometers for the Great Autonomy model.
Equipment of the Tesla Model Y
Tesla is considered a premium brand, but in its access range, that is Model 3 and Model Y, that condition only occurs in certain versions. In the case of Model Y, there is no finishing structure as such. Everything rotates depending on the selected mechanical variant, which allows access to particular details and equipment. Outwardly, all models are the same, with the exception of sets of rims designed specifically for the Performance level. Internally the presentation is also similar with minor differences.
As far as equipment is concerned, the Tesla Model Y, like any other Tesla, the main focus revolves around a 15 inch touch screen that collects all the information and all the systems of the car. It is a complex system due to its poor location and its excessive number of functionalities. Among them, it is worth highlighting the Auto Pilot typical of the house. A very advanced level of autonomous driving that under no circumstances allows the driver to free himself from the vehicle's guidance functions.

The Tesla Model Y according to Euro NCAP
Since its inception, the American company has shown excellent results in all the safety tests it has faced. In the summer of 2022 the Tesla Model Y undergoes the harsh tests of Euro NCAP, receiving a five-star rating. The highest possible score. By sections, the results are as follows: 97 out of 100 in adult passenger protection, 87 out of 100 in child passenger protection, 82 out of 100 in pedestrian vulnerability and 98 out of 100 in ADAS systems and driving assistants.
Rivals of the Tesla Model Y
As has happened with other models of the company, the Tesla Model Y is almost unique in its kind. It is the first of a segment where it is difficult to recognize rivals. We can find similar models in format, but many of them with a lower price and with lower electrical capacities. If we highlight a rival, we could mention the Ford Mustang Match-E, Volkswagen ID.4 or skoda enyaq. All are similar in size, all three are 100% electric, and all three present that image halfway between sedan, SUV and minivan. On the contrary, none play in the same price or performance range.
