Until the recharging network for electric cars is sufficiently extensive and until the batteries provide longer ranges, the electric car that makes the most sense is the urban one. cars like the Volkswagen e-up! They are ideal for moving around the city without problems or ties.

More and more populations are creating low emission zones and anti-pollution protocols to reduce pollution. With the electric urban all the problems disappear since thanks to their ZERO badge they can move without problems, in addition to presenting certain advantages such as not paying to park on the street.

This idea is not new. In fact the up! It has been on the market since 2011, although not with the expected success. In fact it was almost out of print until its conversion. In 2019 the up! It got rid of its thermal versions and became a 100% electric vehicle that was renamed Volkswagen e-up! In mid-2021 the e-up! It finally disappears from the market without leaving a successor in the catalogue.

Technical characteristics of the Volkswagen e-up!

And all the mobility change has occurred without changing platforms. A structure that shared with other Volkswagen Group models like the SEAT Mii Electric and the Skoda Citigoe IV. Said NSF (New Small Family) platform allows housing the entire electrical diagram without modifying the dimensions or the configuration already existing in the thermal models.

That means that in terms of its dimensions, the smallest of the house continues to maintain those ideal urban proportions. 3,6 meters long, 1,64 meters wide and 1,49 meters high. To this we must add a battle of 2,41 meters and five doors that allow shelter for a maximum of four occupants inside.

Since the electric motor is at the front and the batteries are located at the bottom of the car, the trunk of the Volkswagen e-up! maintains good dimensions for being an A segment. 251 liters of minimum capacity and 959 of maximum capacity. More than enough quantities for daily use.

Mechanical range and gearboxes of the Volkswagen e-up!

As we have already said, the up! he changed his mindset to become electric. That leaves us with a single mechanical structure, so there's not much room for imagination. The main element is the battery. A water-cooled lithium-ion battery with 36,8 kWh capacity. A single front electric motor is coupled to it.

This block generates a power of 61 kW, which is 83 of the old horsepower. To that we must add a maximum torque of 210 Nm available from a standstill. Volkswagen has certified that said set homologates a WLTP cycle autonomy of 258 km, with an estimated average cost of 14,5 kWh per 100 kilometers.

In the always delicate moment of recharging, the brand states that It can recover from 10 to 80% of the charge in just one hour if we connect the car to a 40 kW outlet. That time extends up to twelve and a half hours if we plug it into a 2,3 kW domestic outlet, or up to four hours if we plug it into a 7,2 kW Wallbox.

Equipment of the Volkswagen e-up!

The Volkswagen e-up! It is a concept car and urban use. The segment A have always been elusive to two issues. The first is in terms of qualities. We cannot wait for the finishes of a Volkswagen Touareg, and therefore we have an interior composed mainly of hard plastic but well finished.

The second issue is the equipment. To move around the city you do not need great luxuries, and Volkswagen knows it. For that reason the e-up! It has discreet but sufficient equipment. It has two levels: e-up! and e-up! style. In the base finish we do not find many elements, so if we want more comfort we have to jump to the upper level.

There we have 15-inch wheels, type 2 charging cable, climate control, central locking, rain sensor, digital radio and some other trinket. There are no displays or screens to keep the price accessible, but it does have next generation connection for mobile devices, and a discreet display of driving assistants.

Euro NCAP safety tests evaluate each model on sale in Europe with the intention of standardizing crash tests and ratings. With grades ranging from zero to five stars, the Volkswagen e-up! get three of them. It does not aspire to more because of the protection for pedestrians, 46 out of 100, and because of the operation of its few assistants, 55 out of 100. But instead it achieves notable scores in protection of child and adult passengers, with notes of 83 and 81 out of 100 respectively.

The Volkswagen e-up! Km 0 and Second Hand

Being one of the least sold models in the segment, the number of units that can be found on the second-hand market and kilometer zero of the Volkswagen e-up! is limited. In addition, in this last commercial stage, as it is only available with an electrical mechanism, its volume has been further limited.

Nonetheless, the depreciation of the e-up! stands at 35 percent, standing several points above the average of the models of the German brand. While the VO offer is made up mostly of thermal versions, the Km 0 offer is entirely covered by electric units. Of course, most of them with base finishes and few optional ones.

Rivals of the Volkswagen e-up!

El Volkswagen Up!along with his brothers Seat Mii Electric y Skoda Citigo IV, is the urban bus that the Volkswagen Group launched on the market to compete against the kings of segment A, the Fiat 500 y Fiat Panda. The conversion to electric has meant that there are not many rivals on the table, but we can highlight a few: Citroen C-Zero, Peugeot iOn, Renault Twingo in its electric version, Smart Forfour.
