It's been several months since we first heard the Spanish brand based in Martorell talk about its plans with the Cupra EarthseaThe project has finally become a reality and the SUV that is coming to the fastest growing segment in Europe to replace the Ateca will now crown the sports car catalogue of Cupra as the largest and most family-friendly option.
His last name, evidently, is not a coincidence: Terramar is an oval circuit which was inaugurated on a property in San Pedro de Ribas, Barcelona, in October 1923. A Spanish Grand Prix was held there in that same year, 1923, and at the time of its construction it was the third racetrack on the Old Continent, after Brooklands (built in 1907 and located in the United Kingdom) and Monza (built in 1922 and located near Milan).
Cupra Terramar: the replacement of the Ateca
This compact and sporty SUV with family touches reaches the Meters long 4,52 (it is around 13 cm longer than an Ateca), with a wheelbase of 2,68 metres, and 1,58 and 1,86 metres high and wide, respectively. As well as being considerably larger than an Ateca, it debuts in terms of design the brand's new philosophy, which was introduced in the new Tavascan, Formentor and León.
Without a doubt, among the most characteristic elements that stand out on the exterior are the already typical shark nose, the triangular LED daytime running lights, the aggressive bumpers found both at the front and rear, the brand's backlit logo in the rear view and the particular copper-toned rims that range from 18 to 20 inches.
The bodywork can be dressed up to nine different colors, including the two matte options: Matte Century Bronze, Matte Enceladus Grey, Dark Void, Fiord Blue, Glacial White, Cosmos Blue, Timanfaya Grey, Midnight Black and Graphene Grey.
The latest technology
Along with the immense list of driving assistants and electronic elements that make the Terramar a truly cutting-edge sports model, the equipment regarding digitalization that we find as standard in the interior stands out. 12,9 inch For infotainment, the centre console controls the system and guarantees a fully connected interface, while another screen behind the steering wheel acts as digital instrumentation and a third, Head-Up Display, ensures that we do not lack relevant information when we are on the move.
The rest is in line with what Cupra has accustomed us to in the rest of its models: qualities premium with upholstery, in this case, renewable and recycled, geometric patterns in a multitude of components such as door panels or dashboard and Three different alternatives for the interior environment: Deep Ocean, Moon Light and High Canyon.
The first of them is characterized by the dark blue color and incorporates bucket-type seats made of PVC and covered with fabric created from Seaqual Yarn, a textile material made based on marine plastics recovered from beaches, oceans, estuaries and seas. The second refers to a more sporty character with the dark grey colour and Dinamica upholstery covered with fabric from PET plastics and clothing.
The last one is perhaps the most luxurious and elegant, with bucket seats in dark burgundy thanks to the use of leather that has been tanned using a natural plant-based process.
Engines of the new Cupra Terramar
The best thing of all is that this car will continue to rely on combustion. Specifically, it includes five different propulsion systems that encompass up to three different technologies: traditional combustion (C label), microhybridisation (Eco label) and plug-in hybridisation (0 Emissions label.)
The entry-level model will be a 1.5 eTSI with a 48-volt network, 150 hp and a seven-speed DSG gearbox. Above, two Terramar e-Hybrid or Plug-In Hybrid of 204 and 272 HP which, thanks to their 19,7 kWh battery capacity, can travel more than 100 km in electric mode. In addition, they can be charged at a maximum of 11 or 50 kW, depending on whether they are plugged into AC or DC.
Finally, the traditional gasoline models will develop 204 hp and 265 hp, both with a 2.0 TSI engine and all-wheel drive. The most powerful of them will be known with the acronym VZ, for Veloz.
Cupra Terramar specifications and price
In order to ensure that, despite being a large car, it maintains the firmness and dynamism that all Cupras embody, the chassis of the new Terramar will use the MQB Evo platform, will have a McPherson strut at the front and an independent multi-link configuration at the rear, the suspension will be lowered by 10 mm, it will allow both deactivating the ESC and choosing between different parameters of the new generation of the DCC system and will have progressive steering as standard, among many other things.
The first units will be delivered to dealers in the coming weeks, including the special edition limited to 1.337 units of the America's Cup. What is the starting price? Since 41.190 €.
