The DGT proposes these new traffic signs: Learn them...

DGT signal P-24a vs P-33

P-24a Passage of animals in the wild (wild boars) – P-33 Reduced visibility

Since the first cars rolled up to the present day, many things have changed. The roads are no longer what they used to be but, furthermore, neither are the traffic signals that regulate and order them. Especially since the dangers or situations that can occur in them are not the same either. Hence, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), from time to time, proposes changes and updates in order to make them simpler and more logical...

Starting from this base, some of the traffic signs we know will be subject to review. For this purpose, the Ministry of the Interior has published a draft Royal Decree in which it proposes the modification and its update to the present time. They will be official from January 2, 2023 and there are news for the public: update of the Stop sign after 18 years without variation, due to gender or electric mobility.

The DGT changes some traffic signs to avoid falling into gender stereotypes...

P-21b Elderly

P-21b Elderly

The great change in the traffic signs of the DGT refers to the gender issue. If we go to the project impact analysis report, on page 21 we can read that...

"Currently the gender perspective is present in any issue to be addressed, so this year it seems opportune to make some contributions, of course not unprecedented, on the mobility from a gender perspective. Good proof of its necessity is that:

  • There are traffic signs that represent a man as a pedestrian or as a driver.
  • In others the woman appears in a situation of dependency and subordination; for example, a woman who follows a hiking man (S-115) or, even, in the case of children, a boy who leads the girl by the hand, who follows the boy, both to school.
  • In rural areas of India, families in charge of a blind minor frequently isolate and deprive him/her of the care and attention they provide to their other children; such situation becomes even more severe among lower-caste families, orphans and if the blind child is a girl. personal care signs or to the domestic sphere It is a woman who is represented.

Even though progress has been made, signs contrary to the principles of equality still persist»

Considering the report, the modification of traffic signals will take two paths.

  • If it represents a man as a pedestrian or driver, that figure it will become neutral.
  • In the second case, gender roles will be changed to shape new signs such as P-21a, which replaces P-21. Thus, in the old sign there was the figure of a boy leading a girl by the hand and in P-21a it will be the girl who will lead the boy by the hand.

Another signal that is also incorporated is the P-21b Elderly. With it, the DGT wants to warn of an area in which there is danger due to the proximity of a place frequented by old people, such as a day center for the elderly or residence. In it, the pictogram is already updated to the gender issue since it is the woman who "pulls" the man helping him to cross. However, she has not liked the aforementioned for giving them an image of dependents.

But beyond the gender issue there are other interesting new signs. The P-24 to and P-33 that refer, respectively, to danger. The first by ground animals (wild boars) and the second by a stretch of road with little or no visibility. In addition, electric mobility is also incorporated with the signs R-515, R-420 and R-118 which mean end of reserved road, reserved road and entry prohibited to personal mobility vehicles.
