Peugeot and its plan for the future: heat engines will soon end

peugeot future plan

Peugeot announced today, a few minutes ago, his short, medium and long term future plan, in an event that they themselves have called Peugeot E-Lion Day. Pay attention, because there will be important changes in the gala firm in every way, clearly pointing towards the electrified vehicle.

The first three points to mention are that in this 2023 all its models will have some kind of electrification or electrified versions. To 2025, that is, within just two years, there will be electric variants across the range. Lastly, in the year By 2030 they will stop selling vehicles with thermal engines and all Peugeots will be 100% electric. There is nothing.

But they go much further. As stated by Peugeot itself, its project Peugeot E-Lion Project It does not deal exclusively with electrification, but rather has a 360-degree approach based on the following:

  • Ecosystem of products and services
  • Customer experience from charging to connectivity
  • Electrification and commitment to the full range of electric models
  • Efficiency, focusing on maximizing performance while minimizing consumption
  • Environment to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2038

As far as models are concerned, Peugeot will launch five new electric vehicles in the next two years. These EV cars will be the E-308 and E-308 SW (family body), in addition to the E-408, E-3008 and E-5008. As you can see, these five products derive directly from vehicles that are already on the market with combustion engines, although below we tell you what's new for 3008 and 5008.

On the other hand, they have also commented on a new microhybrid system to carry out a smooth transition and adapted to all types of users. The 48 volt MHEV system will be introduced this year in the already known Peugeot 208, 2008, 3008, 5008 and 408, combining the 1.2 PureTech 3-cylinder engine with electrical support of 21 kW. Depending on the model, powers of 100 or 136 hp, mated to a new 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox (E-DCS6).

This technology offers increased torque at low revs and a 15% reduction in fuel consumption (from 126g CO2/km in 3008). In urban driving, a C-segment SUV equipped with the Hybrid system can operate more than 50% of the time in 100% electric mode with zero emissions.

As we said, there are other interesting news. The 3008 will receive a generational change in the second half of this 2023, based on a new platform called STLA Medium and from it the new Peugeot E-3008 will be born. Although they have not confirmed a time frame, they say that the E-5008 will be released soon after.

Electric cars have a useful life of 25 years…

Peugeot electrified range

An interesting point is that the French firm has said that the useful life of BEV vehicles will be between 20 and 25 years, while -they say- that of a vehicle with a thermal engine is around 15 years. I do not think that in this case they have consulted the age data of the Spanish car park in great depth...

On the other hand, and we have finished, they have affirmed that they also want to focus on minimizing the weight of multiple vehicle components, thus reducing the waste generated, saving on materials and, of course, improving the energy efficiency of their cars. They say that this can be applied to elements such as seats, making them thinner, and to other upholstery, giving these two examples.
