Land Rover's new Range Rover Sport First contact!

Land Rover launched the first Range Rover Sport back in 2005. Since then, the British brand has sold more than a million units, which is said soon, of which some 20.000 have been registered in Spain. You already know that on paper it is the sportiest model of the company.

These days Land Rover puts up for sale the New Generation of this brand new SUV, with a significant leap in quality and technology, also adapting the engines to new trends and market needs. Of course, in the same way its price rises, because the new Access Range Rover Sport is offered from 102.700 euros in our country.

To get to know him better, the brand invited us to his static display in Madrid. We have not been able to drive it, but we have been able to see it live, touch it and get on it. Therefore, we can already have first impressions of this vehicle in the absence of the driving test, which by the way we really want to do.

Exterior elegance based on natural lines

On an aesthetic level, the Range Rover Sport 2022 stands out for a great elegance, sportiness and softness thanks to natural lines. Yes, these three styles have been brought together in the same exterior design, something that I already tell you is not easy at all. They have not been tempted to create a car that is too overloaded.

At front we've got rounded shapes for the ends of the bumper, spiced up with dark accents on the presentation unit to deliver that dynamic edge. Of course, the three levels of black stripes may seem too much, although live it is more pleasant than in photography. The headlights of course are LED matrix.

El lateral is my favorite view in this Range Rover Sport. The lower part is clearly distinguished from the upper part, using doors with a huge panel and flush handles. In the upper area, the pillars and the black roof, together with the darkened rear windows do the rest. They are no less unnoticed 22-inch wheels in this exposed unit. Giant brake discs can be seen.

The area back of the car differs more from the Range Rover that we met months ago, especially because of the lighting style. Again, a lot of elegance in its lines, with some darkened pilots that add that touch of personality, as well as a lower diffuser with fine exhaust outlets on each side.

Regarding the dimensions, the Range Rover Sport from Land Rover measures 4,95 meters long, 2,05 wide by 1,82 high. Meanwhile, his battle is 3 meters.

Lots of technology on board

For its part, the interior also has a very clean design, with straight lines and no frills. However, a good dose of technological load is not lacking, as evidenced by its 13,7-inch customizable digital instrument cluster with very good vision.

In the center of the dashboard there is a 13,1-inch haptic display for all things infotainment. It is slightly curved and in a less vertical position than usual but, at least when stationary, I did not find it a problem.

El multimedia system for all versions is the so-called Pivi Pro by the English brand. It has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Amazon Alexa assistant for voice commands and, optionally, a Meridian sound system up to 29 speakers with 1.430 watts of power and acoustic insulation with noise cancellation through the headrest speakers.

Just below this screen we have wheels to manage the climate control, the selector for the automatic transmission and some more buttons related to the different driving functions, such as driving modes for asphalt and others more oriented to complicated surfaces. All these very good touch controls, the truth.

If we talk about quality, the Range Rover Sport is located in a very advantageous position, because in many aspects it is even above its German competitors. Of course, as is logical, it does not reach the highest luxury of the Land Rover Range Rover, which we already saw months ago; a car that also stands out is considerably more expensive. There is also no lack of many customization options, as in any good Range worth its salt.

Regarding space, four adults of normal size will travel comfortably in this car. The doors open well and once inside there are good heights in all directions. Of course, if we want to use the central square, that occupant will not be as comfortable, as is usual. The trunk volume is 647 liters.

Mechanical range: 5 versions confirmed at the moment

Moving on to the mechanical section, the new Range Rover Sport is offered with five different engines. Two microhybrids, two plug-in hybrids and a conventional mechanic. Starting with the mild hybrids, both are 3-liter diesel, with designations D250 and D300. The first gives 249 and 600 Nm, while the most powerful delivers 300 hp and 650 Nm of torque.

The PHEV models are gasoline and are called P440e and P510e, using a 38,2 kWh battery. The first version gives 440 hp and 560 Nm, raising these data to 510 hp in the most powerful, which maintains the same torque.

The approved electric range is 114 kilometers and can circulate in EV mode up to 140 km/h. Charging time from 0 to 80% is 40 minutes on a 50 kW fast charger, while on a 7 kW wall charger it is 5 hours.

Lastly, the most gross and performance-oriented will be the Range Rover Sport P530, although it will not hit the market until next year. We talk about a V8 gasoline 4.4-liter turbocharged engine capable of delivering 530 hp and 750 Nm from just 1.800 laps. Of course, lacking electrical support, it receives the C sticker from the DGT. Its top speed is limited to 250 km/h and it can go from 0 to 100 in just 4,5 seconds.

All versions of the Range Rover Sport have an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.

Air suspension, active stabilizers and 4-wheel steering

But there is much more beyond the engines when it comes to talking about dynamics. We start with the dynamic air suspension, which uses a dual-chamber system to increase comfort in all kinds of circumstances. Of course it is adaptive, so it will be stiffer or softer depending on the situation and the driving mode activated. It has several different levels of height, varying by no less than 13,5 centimeters from the lowest position to the highest.

It offers a specific wading mode, which is where the body height is raised to the maximum. In this case, the wading capacity is up to 90 centimeters.

Another important aspect of suspension is the active stabilizer bar system. They apply greater or lesser stiffness depending on the terrain, speed and other parameters, but the most remarkable thing is that they can be completely disconnected to improve the wheel travel when driving offroad, thus guaranteeing better behavior.

Also notable is the system of four-wheel steering, which improves agility at low speed and poise on fast roads. The rear axle can turn counterclockwise up to 7,3 degrees, reducing the turning radius to just 10,95 degrees. These systems that we have already tested in other cars help a lot when maneuvering.

We're nearing the end of this article, but before we finish we need to take a look at trim levels and prices. The new Range Rover Sport from Land Rover is very configurable, but the main endings are the S, SE, Dynamic SE and Dynamic HSE finishes. To them we must add the most luxurious called Autobiography and a release edition called First Edition.

As for rates, the range starts with the P440e and its $102.700. His more powerful PHEV brother, the P510e starts at 141.650 euros. Then we have the 48-volt micro-hybrid diesel options, with rates of 103.050 euros for the D250 and 107.250 for the D300. Of course not all engines are available with all finishes.
