Test Citroën C5 Aircross Shine 1.6 PureTech 180 CV

C5 Aircross

The "new" Citroën opted in 2014, with the Cactus, for daring designs. As we saw with the Citroën Berlingo, either you like them or you hate them, but one of the sections where there is less indifference is in the comfort that the models of the legendary French firm have.

Unveiled at last year's Paris Motor Show, the Citroën C5 Aircross follows the lines of the models of the French brand. A modern silhouette, interior with recurring lines throughout the cabin, a wide range of engines and space for a whole family. Do you want to meet him? Let's go to the mess.

Nice design… or not?

C5 Side Aircross

As we saw in the Citroën Berlingo test, the French firm's latest design line is very special. It leaves no one indifferent, I love it or you hate it. In my case, I bet on the positive side and although it is not a design that I love, I do not dislike it at all. It is brave that Citroën has chosen these shapes for its entire model range because it is very different from what exists in the current market.

Starting from the front, it features the Citroën logo, the two chevrons, which are located above a very elaborate radiator grille, and as we saw with the Citroën Berlingo, the headlights are divided. At the bottom we find red trim and fog lights. The hood on the other hand is quite tall and has muscular forms, although it does not present an impediment to the driver's vision.

C5 Aircross Rear

The silhouette of its side is slightly reminiscent of that of the Peugeot 3008, although its content is very different. In it we find some windows with a quite generous chrome, some Airbumps in the lower part with shades of red that contrast with those seen in the front part and the sensation of a floating roof generated by this black strip.

The back is very well worked, although it has elements that do not seem right to me, such as false exhaust outlets or these plastics that imitate air outlets. On the other hand, the rear lights are modern and follow a design line that we will find inside. The signature logo is also very present.

Rounded corners wherever you look

C5 Aircross Dashboard

If the exterior follows a line clearly marked by the French firm, the interior continues an obsession with shapes that we could already see in both the Citroën Berlingo and the DS 7 Crossback. In the case of the C5 Aircross, numerous square figures with rounded edges can be seen, as we could already see in the French van. This contributes to the overall design by making it more recognizable and giving a sense of logic throughout the cabin.

The dashboard is made of plastic of different softness. The one on the top is much harder than the one on the bottom, brown in color. The latter imitates leather with stitching made in the same color. Although to the touch it is more than evident that it is plastic, at first sight it pretends to be leather, which offers a certain quality, at least before touching it. Still, its fits are good and as far as it goes, the dashboard is adequate for a vehicle of this price.

C5 Aircross Dashboard

We turn to the true protagonist of the cabin, the 8-inch touch screen. It is exactly the same that we can find in other models of the PSA Group. Its operation is fast and efficient, offering the information correctly and having different direct accesses arranged at the bottom that will help us when configuring something in particular. It is just at this point where we find one of its negative points. The air conditioning is adjusted from the touch screen and it is something very cumbersome to do when we are driving, since we will have to take our eyes off the road, something that is not safe. Let's hope PSA takes note of this, as it's much easier to adjust the temperature using knobs or buttons than having to search for an area on the dashboard.

On the other hand, the interior of the C5 Aircross can have three different environments, as the French firm calls them. These are: Standard, Wild Grey, Metropolitan Grey, Metropolitan Beige and Hype Brown. The latter was the one that equipped our unit. These closed configurations will modify the color of the upholstery, both for the seats and for the trim on the lower part of the dashboard.

Finally, highlight the design of the center console, featuring a gear lever that is exactly the same as the one we can find in other PSA Group, whether it is both Peugeot and DS. This slightly hinders the vision of the Eco button, preventing us from knowing if we have activated it. Apart from this, it is easy to use. It has a lock button on the left side that will serve to engage reverse gear. At his side, we find the Grip Control system, which will vary torque delivery depending on various environments to offer the greatest possible grip.

Privileges for the rear rows

C5 Aircross Front seats

Undoubtedly one of the strengths of all Citroën models is the comfort they offer. The C5 Aircross, how could it be otherwise, also has this feature. It all starts when you enter the cabin. The bottom of the door is not too high off the ground, making access easy.

The front seats have a current design. Their shapes are the usual ones and they do not resort to designer headrests or strange grips on the sides. Their function is to be comfortable, and honestly, they more than fulfill it. These also have lumbar adjustment and, while the driver's seat has automatic adjustment both longitudinally and in height, as well as memory for 3 different positions, the passenger's seat is adjusted manually. In any case, both are heated, which is always a plus on winter days.

C5 Aircross Rear seats

It's weird to say, but the rear seats are probably the most interesting.. These incorporate longitudinal adjustment, that is, they will be able to increase or reduce the capacity of the trunk to perfectly accommodate the space demands of the passengers in the previous rows. Personally, I consider that it is an implementation that all vehicles in this segment should have, and I am glad to see that Citroën has been attentive to these details. The central square, as in most cases, is more useful than in other models, due to a non-existent transmission tunnel, its softness and its width, almost as much as the seats on the sides.

Finally, and as I always do, we talk about the trunk. As I said, it is expandable due to the configuration of the rear seats. It will be able to go from 580 litres, which is already a considerable figure in the market, to 720 litres. An atrocity. Its forms are cubic and very usable, for which we can only thank Citroën for making the most of the useful space of the car in favor of the occupants.

Engines

C5 Aircross Engine

Let's go to the engines. The C5 Aircross is available in four different power outputs offered by four different engines.. The gasoline engines are a 1.2 Puretech with 130 horsepower and a 1.6 Puretech with 180 horsepower, which is the one mounted on our test unit. On the other hand, the diesel engines are a 1.5-horsepower 130 BlueHDI and a 2.0-horsepower 180 BlueHDI. The most powerful engines only have an 8-speed EAT automatic transmission, while the 130-horsepower engines, both diesel and gasoline, can opt for a 6-speed manual gearbox or the aforementioned EAT.

Consumption

With regard to the consumption approved for the 1.6 hp 180 PureTech engine, the propellant that I have had the opportunity to test, they differ a lot from the results obtained. Although they are still good considering the weight (1.500 kilograms) and the power of the vehicle, they are far from what the brand claims.

Version urban consumption Extra-urban consumption Average consumption
Version urban consumption Extra-urban consumption Average consumption
Citroën C5 Aircross 1.6 PureTech EAT8 180 CV Measured 8.5 l / 100 km 6.6 l / 100 km 7.5 l / 100 km

Comfortable, but… is it the most important thing?

C5 Aircross Dashboard

The 1.6 hp 180 Puretech engine offers more than enough thrust when it comes to making additions on highways or overtaking on secondary roads. Although it is true that the EAT8 gearbox is not very refined in strong accelerations, especially from a standstill, it behaves very well in running order, changing speed without being hardly noticed. This contributes to comfort in the cabin.

In fact, comfort is one of the most outstanding features of the Citroën C5 Aircross. This is due, among other things, to the soft setting of its suspension, which allows it to offer a comfortable feeling when we start up, although I have been able to verify that it slightly harms other sections. It is remarkable above all in stability, causing a slight body roll when cornering which, although typical of vehicles in this segment, is somewhat more noticeable in the C5 Aircross. This results in understeer caused by the vehicle's inertia. It can be somewhat annoying mainly on twisty roads. Although it is not excessive, it is the small price to pay for the comfort that we will have.

C5 Aircross Steering wheel detail

On the other hand, the steering is assisted correctly, allowing the driver to notice the small irregularities of the road and reporting it. It is something to note because most vehicles in this segment tend to have a highly assisted steering. On the other hand, one of the sections that I found very interesting is the turning radius. The C5 Aircross behaves like a fish in water in cities, and it is something to be thankful for. For information, it has a turning radius of 5,35 meters.

Comfortable, nice? and cheap

C5 Aircross Front

The C5 Aircross is directly rivaled by vehicles such as the Nissan Qashqai, a best seller within the segment, the Peugeot 3008 and the Opel Grandland X, with which it shares a platform, and in the case of the Frenchman, also engines, and the Volkswagen Tiguan, among several. The obvious question is… what can Citroën offer in a market so full of alternatives? Mainly, the first thing you notice when sitting in one of the new models of the French firm is comfort. Probably the C5 Aircross, both the DS 7 Crossback, enjoy being the most comfortable vehicles I've ever ridden, and this is evident as soon as you sit down. On the other hand, its price is reduced, starting from 19.490 euros. It is only comparable with the Skoda Karoq, since the others mentioned start from prices, at least, 3.000 euros higher.
