Test Citroën C5 Aircross Shine gasoline 130 CV (with video)

Test Citroën C5 Aircross

The segment of compact SUVs it continues to be the most important category in the Spanish market. In fact, one in four registrations in our country belongs to this type of vehicle. In it, there are many alternatives of different brands and prices. This time we thoroughly tested the Citroen C5 Aircross, who just received a makeover.

For this test we have opted for a very logical and sensible mechanic, such as the engine 1.2 PureTech 130 hp with manual transmission. Of course, the level of finish is the top of the range, which is called Shine Pack. First of all, I wanted to remember the starting price of the Citroën C5 Aircross: 27.595 Euros official rate.

Change just enough to notice the update

On an aesthetic level there are not many notable changes compared to the predecessor variant, but there are a new image can be seen on the front. This is because Citroën has introduced a new headlight design. Previously they were divided, while now both the daytime running lights, turn signals and main headlights for high and low beams appear in the same block.

In the same way the main radiator grille and the bumper have been modifieds, giving the impression that the C5 Aircross has changed more than it really has. If we look closely, the side is almost identical, with the protections Airbumps lower, marked wheel arches and roof bars that in our case are black anodized.

Test Citroën C5 Aircross rear lights

There are also no substantial variations at the back. The most striking thing about this rear area is the new interior design of the pilot lights, although they maintain their outer contour. In the lower area of the bumper there are two trims that simulate two exhaust outlets.

Before we get into the cabin, let's take a quick look at the outside dimensions, which also do not suffer changes in this restyling. The Citroën C5 Aircross restyling measures 4,5 meters long, 1,84 meters wide and 1,67 meters high. His battle is 2,73 meters.

Inside, a new touch screen and… little else

Test Citroën C5 Aircross interior

There are also no huge new features inside, but a more jovial cabin is appreciated thanks to the new 10-inch touch screen. However, Citroën plays with us a bit, because the extremes do not have great functionality. In fact, when we connect Apple CarPlay or Android Auto (wired), the image is far from the entire screen. Unfortunately, it also maintains the integrated climate control, something that we do not like at all.

To that main multimedia screen we have to add the 12,3-inch digital instrument cluster. Honestly, it's not entirely to my liking either because we never see the revs with a big enough dial and because I haven't been 100% comfortable with any of its previews. That yes, it is something that goes in the tastes of each one and, positively, the speed and the fuel level, which is the most important thing, always looks very good.

Test Citroën C5 Aircross seats Advanced Comfort

For me, the best detail of the front seats of the C5 Aircross is that of the seats. These are a new generation of the “Advanced Comfort”, now having more foam. They are very comfortable for long trips and are also pleasant to the touch, except when the car has been parked for a while in the sun because, due to the leather and the lack of ventilation, it is horrible. By the way, they have electric adjustment and a massage function in our test unit.

For the rest, in quality of finishes, adjustments and chosen materials, the interior seems more than correct. We also have good holes to leave objects, wireless charging surface, cup holders and armrests with interior chest among others. Of course, the command to manage the cruise control / speed limiter... I think it's time for Stellantis to renew it for aesthetics, although it is true that it is intuitive to operate.

Modularity in the second row of seats, a whole plus

Test Citroën C5 Aircross rear seats

To enter the rear seats we have generous access. The doors don't open 90 degrees, but they don't stray far. Once inside they welcome us seats also very comfortable and pleasant to the touch, so all occupants will travel in comfort. This is also helped by the fact that the three seats are clearly divided and independent.

As for space itself, there is a good distance to the ceiling and in terms of leg length I would say it is in the category average or slightly below, but still four adults of around 1,80 will travel with enough width.

On the other hand, the transmission tunnel is practically invaluable, which is always a great help for those occasions in which we occupy all the seats. It also doesn't hurt that we can adjust the inclination of the backrests and the entire length of the bench., which means that we vary the space between the trunk and the passenger compartment in a simple way depending on each circumstance.

Test Citroën C5 Aircross trunk

And since I mentioned the trunk, the capacity with the seats in their rearmost position is 580 liters, going to no less than 720 liters if we slide them to the front; Of course, this way the space for the legs will be too fair. There is also a double-height floor and the possibility of folding down the backrests to thus generate a capacity of 1.630 liters.

In the plug-in hybrid versions, the load capacity is reduced to 460 liters, which becomes 600 if we put the second row of seats forward.

Short mechanical range, but correct

Test Citroën C5 Aircross petrol 130

Moving on to the mechanical section, the Citroën C5 Aircross does not have a tremendously wide range of engines, but it does have a sensible one. We can choose a 1.5 hp 130 BlueHDi diesel engine with both manual and automatic transmission. With the same power appears the 1.2 PureTech petrol, which is a three-cylinder turbo also available with manual and automatic gearbox.

The only hybrid variant is the Hybrid 225, which is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). It has a 1.6-liter gasoline engine and an electric one, generating a combined maximum power of 225 hp. Its autonomy in electric mode is 55 kilometers and it can circulate in this way at speeds of up to 135 km/h.

At the wheel of the Citroën C5 Aircross: Comfort above all else

Test Citroën C5 Aircross steering wheel

If something characterizes this car and much of Citroën's current range, it is the ride comfort. I already loved the Citroën C4 for this aspect, when I tried it almost a year ago, and in the C5 Aircross it has been repeated again. I can say without fear of being wrong that it is the most comfortable car in its category. And all this taking into account that it is far from the most expensive.

La suspension works magic to soak up all kinds of bumps. Sudden, smooth irregularities, in the city, on the road, broken asphalt, cobbled areas, expansion joints, sewers... Everything, it swallows everything. And be careful, our unit comes with inch wheels 19. Of course, if there is something that the shock absorbers do not fully absorb, its comfortable seats hide it perfectly.

If you are looking for sportsmanship, I am sorry to tell you that…

Test Citroën C5 Aircross PureTech

The downside for those looking for a certain sporty feel is that, of course, hard braking or cornering generates more pitch and roll in this car that, for example, in a Peugeot 3008, which has the same platform but a very different setup. This C5 Aircross takes longer on support changes and feels lazier on those tasks.

It's not like I have the best address for precision and for its great electrical assistance, which will favor calmer drivers and standstill maneuvers. For his part, the gear shift has the typical touch of a lifetime of Peugeot and Citroën, being somewhat rubbery.

Going back to the positives, I was surprised how well insulated the car is. In the superior finishes it comes with double front windows, which greatly mitigate exterior noise and that generated by the aerodynamics of the vehicle itself. There is not much rolling noise either, although there is some from the engine.

The 1.2 PureTech 130 engine and its consumption in the Citroën C5 Aircross

Test Citroën C5 Aircross rims

And now speaking of the engine, I liked this 1.2 PureTech more than I expected. It is true that there are slightly less noisy three-cylinder engines and more refined, but the truth is that your answer is more than correct above 2.000 laps, it is not necessary to increase it a lot of laps except in mountain passes and overtaking and then it is satisfied with little fuel.

This engine generates 130 hp at 5.500 rpm and a maximum torque of 230 Nm at 1.750 rpm. According to its data sheet, it reaches a maximum speed of 195 km/h and needs 10,5 seconds to go from 0 to 100. The approved mixed consumption is 6,2 l/100 km.

In our case, throughout the test we have recorded a total consumption of 7,1 liters. On the highway at 120 km/h and in normal driving, it settles for about 6,3 liters, while in the city we will be close to 8 l/100 km.

Conclusions
