Test Hyundai i10 Tecno 1.2 MPI 84 CV

Test Hyundai i10 Tecno

El A-segment, that of cars with a clearly urban approach, is going through a bad time. It is the category that, percentage-wise, has been most affected by the rise in prices in recent years. So much so that many manufacturers have decided to stop selling them. Of the few that remain one of the best options is Hyundai i10, the car we have tested this week.

Model Hyundai competes with other renowned opponents such as his cousin, the Kia Picanto, Fiat 500 or even the Fiat Panda. But also with Suzuki Ignis o Toyota Aygo XCross. The i10 has a starting price of 11.800 euros (with discounts) and in the following lines I am going to tell you all its details.

Modern and urban, but not a crossover This is the Hyundai i10!

Starting with aesthetics, the tested unit equips the Techno trim level, with contrasting black roof. It is characterized by inch wheels 16, for its glossy black radiator grille, as well as the mirror housings or the circular daytime running lights on the front.

Test Hyundai i10 rear profile

Aesthetically it seems to me a success, at least in this level of finish, although they say that "About tastes there is nothing written”. Personally I find their shapes attractive marked bumper and hood, as well as the lines of the headlights, the curves of the side or the "diffuser" of the rear area.

As usual in urban cars, the search for more interior space can be seen from the side view. Therefore we see some fairly short overhangs and a remarkable height if we compare it with larger vehicles.

In this section it is important to highlight its compact external dimensions. Hyundai's utility measures 3,67 meters long, 1,68 wide, 1,48 high and has a wheelbase of 2,42 meters.

On the top trim level Style comes with rear disc brakes as standard.

You don't need luxuries to have a nice interior

Test Hyundai i10 inside

Inside you can take a pleasant surprise, because dashboard appearance is very good. Of course, there are no fancy materials, but practically all the adjustments are perfect and, most importantly, everything is in the right place. As I say, visually it seems very well resolved.

We have a simple instrument panel but with a central screen for the main trip information, such as consumption, fuel autonomy and various partials. The rev counter and speedometer, as well as the coolant temperature are visible in an instant.

Meanwhile, in the center of the dashboard we have an 8-inch screen, which is quite good if we take into account the type of car in which we are mounted. Beyond that, it is noteworthy that it has wireless smartphone synchronization, something that is always appreciated. If we want to recharge the battery of our phone, we can do it from the USB or 12-volt sockets.

The ventilation system does not have an automatic climate control, but a manual air conditioning lifelong. At least in this finish, because in the upper one a single-zone air conditioner comes as standard.

Very good habitability for four

As far as habitability is concerned, the Hyundai i10 is a car approved for five occupants, except in the most accessible finish that only has four seats. In the front seats I, with my height of 1,76, have felt comfortable enough, but logically you notice that you are closer to the passenger than in a larger car.

Test Hyundai i10 rear seats

in the second row you can travel well as long as you do not have a tall size, above 1,80, for example. In this sense, the biggest impediment is not the height of the bodywork, which is very good, but the space for the knees, which may rub against you with the front backrest. Anyway, to be an A segment, its rear seats are more than correct.

Despite being approved for five occupants, you can already imagine that it is not very comfortable for five people to make long journeys in this car. It will come in handy for specific occasions, although if you can choose, I recommend that you ask for the driver's or passenger's seat.

Is the trunk of the Hyundai i10 big enough?

Test Hyundai i10 trunk

If we open the gate trunk we meet a Capacity of 252 liters. Taking into account its barely 3,67 meters in length, the volume is more than correct, being enough to load the purchase or a couple of stacked cabin suitcases, as well as several backpacks for a getaway as a couple.

Three different engines and two gearboxes

As far as engines are concerned, the Hyundai i10 can be configured with three powers different, always gasoline and without any type of electrification, as well as with a 5-speed manual transmission or a robotic transmission. Needless to say, the drive is always to the front axle.

We can choose between block 1.0 MPI naturally aspirated with 66 hp available only with manual gearbox, a 1.2 MPI also without supercharging yielding 84 hp and a 1.0 TGDI with turbo that delivers 100 hp. Both the 66 and the 84 horsepower can carry the robotized gearbox, only offering the manual transmission for the most powerful of the three.

At the wheel of the 10 hp Hyundai i84

Test Hyundai i10 gasoline engine 84 hp

For this test we have chosen what we consider to be the most sensible mechanical variant; the 1.2 petrol with 84 hp and 171 Nm of torque. It approves an average fuel consumption of 5,5 l/100 km, in addition to a 0 to 100 in 12,6 seconds and a maximum speed of 171 km/h.

Following with the engine, its refinement is remarkable. It is noted that it is a four-cylinder engine, with fine operation, without vibrations and, why not say it, with a much more pleasant sound than that emitted by three-cylinder engines.

The response is sweet throughout the rev range, being more intense from around 4.000 rpm. To wander around and move around the city, I consider that the 84 hp it develops are more than enough, although logically it does not offer a remarkable solvency when facing a slope or when joining a fast track. We have to take it into account and be aware of it.

In the city you will have a good time because of its agility

Test Hyundai i10 front profile

But it is in the cities where we will make the most of this car. Thanks to its compact dimensions and its steering assistance, it shows a great agility to move through traffic. Also to park in small holes or when traveling through narrow streets.

Sincerely, you even get to have a good time fiddling with it because it feels very agile and light, also accompanying the feel of the change with precise and fast enough insertions. Really, he's a joy to drive a car like that around town.

Regarding the suspensions, they have a balanced tare for urban use. It is not excessively soft, because the most abrupt potholes are noticeable, but its configuration has seemed very successful.

Approved scraped to hit the road

Test Hyundai i10 side

If we dare to go out road, beyond the performance of its aforementioned engine, it does not perform badly either. Logically it cannot offer the same poise and precision as a higher segment car, but you do not have the feeling of "being sold" with it.

In fact, I have made two journeys of about 150 kilometers on the highway and I have felt comfortable with it. Aerodynamic noises are perceived, as expected, and its seats are not the most comfortable for very long trips, but even its engine allows you to maintain relatively high cruises as long as there are not many changes in altitude.

Consumer goods

Test Hyundai i10 air conditioning

We are finishing off the dynamic part with the section on consumptions. During the 600 kilometers of testing, carried out for the most part at a happy pace for a car like this, the average has stood at 5,4 liters, that is, one tenth less than the approved consumption.

In this type of engine the difference between urban and highway use is minimal. In fact, on the highway at 120 km/h we have been moving around 5,3 l/100 km, while in use strictly urban the usual thing is to be in the 5,8 or 6 liters every 100 kilometers. From my point of view, it's not bad at all.

Conclusions

Test Hyundai i10 rear pillar

It is a real shame that the anti-pollution regulations and the increasingly demanding safety systems are forcing manufacturers to raise the price of these cars so much or, directly, to have to do without them.

Conclusion very nice and practical vehicles when moving around the city, being able to have a vehicle of this category for day-to-day urban journeys and then another larger car to travel with the family. But we fully understand that fewer and fewer customers can consider buying a new segment A for current prices.
