Test Hyundai Ioniq 5 Star 160 kW (218 CV) and 481 km autonomy

Test Hyundai Ioniq 5

Ioniq is the electrical sub-brand of the brand Hyundai, which was born based on the good results obtained in the Hyundai model Ioniq launched in 2016. Thus, the South Korean firm differentiates its conventional range on the one hand, the high-performance range (N range) on the other and the Ioniq electric models on the other.

The first specific product born from this family is the Hyundai ioniq 5, and we have already been able to test it. We have recently been with the brand in the national presentation of this fully electric crossover, knowing it first-hand and driving it for about 100 kilometers through the Community of Madrid.

Before going into details with the product in question, it is important to get in touch with the Asian brand and its strategy. The first thing to note is that in 2020 Hyundai sold some 60.000 zero-emission cars, achieving a 13% share of the electric market in Europe. His plan for 2025 is to market some 560.000 electric and around 110.000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

On the other hand, the Ioniq 5 is pretty much just the tip of the spear. In fact, in 2022 we will meet the Hyundai Ioniq 6, which will be a sedan, and later the Ioniq 7, a large SUV. Logically, all of them will be electric and in principle they will take the new modular E-GMP platform.

Test Hyundai Ioniq 5 rear profile

But as they say, "I have come to talk about my book”. The important topic of this today is to know what the Hyundai Ioniq 5 really offers us, how it behaves and if it is an electric one to take into account for those of you who are thinking of making the leap from the thermal engine to the electric drive. I anticipate that its starting price can be around 35.000 euros by applying all the options and aid currently available.

Although it seems compact, the Ioniq 5 is bigger than a Tucson

Aesthetically it is a very striking car because of its design, but what has surprised me the most on a visual level is that it is considerably larger than what was intuited from the images. In the photos it looks practically like a compact, like an i30 for example, but this crossover is even bigger than a Hyundai Tucson.

Measure no less than 4,63 meters in length, 1,89 wide and 1,6 high. I mean, it's a big car. Also, his battle is nothing less than 3 meters exact, with the wheels very close to the corners and with short overhangs. Since we are talking about part of its technique, the weight (empty) of this car ranges from 1.830 to 2.100 kilos depending on the versions.

Hyundai's intention is to sell between 800 and 1.000 units of the Ioniq 5 in 2022.

On a visual level, it is a success: Most people like it

Test Hyundai Ioniq 5 front

Speaking of design, I think Hyundai has hit the nail on the headAlthough this is totally subjective. We have a neo-retro style body, as the brand itself says. It uses straight and simple lines in many details, combining with the technological image and current marked features.

The design is inspired by the brand's first model, the Hyundai Pony from the 70s. And we must stick our necks out, because Hyundai's head of exterior design is Spanish, Eduardo Ramírez.

On the front stand out the double U-shaped LED optics on each side, the central band in gloss black and the lower part of the bumper in a gray tone, which in turn has a shutter to allow air flow to pass or not (and thus cool the system depending on the conditions). The aluminum hood is also heavily marked.

The lateral part is also characteristic for the straight lines on stress lines, the thin front pillars, the flush handles or the different styles of wheels available up to 20 inches.

Test Hyundai Ioniq 5 rear

To top it off, the back is no less striking. We continue to see very straight lines, but the most remarkable thing is again the LED lighting with pixelated pilots. Believe me, if you haven't seen it in person, this car is a real eye-catcher and, as a general rule, it's very popular. Of course, that in the first two finishes the rear turn signals are light bulbs... It is to give the brand a good slap on the wrist.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 boasts differentiation in the cabin

The interior of this car is also very striking, as it is something different from what we are used to. We have a very clean cabin, with horizontal lines and without the usual raised center console. But let's go in parts.

A very characteristic detail is that on the steering wheel there is no trace of the brand logo, which is not usual at all. Also, some of the buttons are tactile, but easier to handle than it might seem. On the left side of it we have a button to change the driving modes and on the right a selector for the transmission.

In the main spokes there are also aluminum cams that we will use to vary the retention when we stop accelerating.

12,3 inches x 2

Test Hyundai Ioniq 5 dashboard

Meanwhile, on the dashboard we have two 12,3-inch screens. As usual, the left (behind the wheel) carries all the important data on circulation, speed, consumption, autonomy, load, as well as the operation of the assistants, among other things. There are several display modes (they change depending on the driving mode) and different screens.

For its part, the central screen is the infotainment screen, which is tactile and has many more functions, menus, car settings, navigation, etc. It is fortunate that Hyundai has not integrated the climate in this area, but has left it lower and well ordered despite the fact that the buttons are tactile. In any case, I didn't find it too distracting.

A curious detail is that the interior has a lot of white tone, giving a greater luminosity. In fact, even the outline of the two screens is white, when it is usually shiny black.

I also don't want to forget about new Head-Up Display with augmented reality. It shows us the speed, navigation instructions with the aforementioned augmented reality, if we have a vehicle in the blind spot or the maximum speed limit of the road. It comes in handy so we don't have to take our eyes off the road.

Test Hyundai Ioniq 5 front seats

The center console is slideable by about 15 centimeters and it comes with two cup holders, USB sockets, a wireless charging surface and a large hole to leave objects, as well as an armrest also with a hole inside. And it is that the holes abound, because there is also another one in the lower and central area of the dashboard, as well as in the doors.

Hyundai claims that much of the materials used in the interior are recycled.

Plenty of room for occupants

As a result, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 enjoys great habitability, a feeling of space and freedom for the occupants. In fact, in the higher versions, the seat can lie down a lot and raise a platform to the height of the twins to practically leave a stretcher, which can come in handy on occasion. For example, to take a relaxed break while we load the vehicle during a trip.

Moving on to the back row, access to the rear seats It's good because the door opens quite a bit and it's big, because the bench is a bit raised. Once seated, there's plenty of knee room, so much so that you can practically cross your legs without the toe of your shoe touching the front seat. It will depend on how it is adjusted.

Test Hyundai Ioniq 5 rear seats

Headroom is also very good, so Adults even 2 meters tall can be comfortable. Perhaps the only thing that can be improved is that the floor is somewhat raised, as is the case in many electric cars, so the knees are somewhat above the hips. But it is not excessive.

Another plus point of the second row is that it can slide in 15 centimeters longitudinally to distribute the space between the trunk and the passenger compartment, while we can also adjust the inclination of the backrest to travel more upright or lying down. In the higher versions these adjustments are electrical. To top it off there are USB sockets, magazine racks and a center armrest with two cup holders.

The trunk is correct, but not outstanding

Test Hyundai Ioniq 5 trunk

Going outside again, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 It has two trunks, the rear being the main one with 531 liters, floor with double bottom and good depth but not too high. The rear seats can of course be folded and the cargo space thus reaches 1.587 liters. To be honest, considering that the car measures 4,63 meters, it is not a huge volume, although it is correct.

If we go to the front, this cargo space is very small. cube 57 liters in the propulsion versions such as the one tested and only 24 in the four-wheel drive mechanics. It will help us to leave a charging cable or a small package. By the way, this front trunk opens only from inside the car, like a hood.

Mechanical options and autonomies

Now we go to the mechanics section. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is currently available with two different batteries and three power levels, as well as rear or integral traction. You can see the different options and autonomies below:

58 kWh battery, 125 kW (170 CV), Rear-wheel drive, Autonomy 384 km, 0 to 100 in 8,5 seconds.

73 kWh battery, 160 kW (218 hp), Rear-wheel drive, Autonomy 481 km, 0 to 100 in 7,4 seconds.

73 kWh battery, 225 kW (305 CV), All-wheel drive, Autonomy 460 km, 0 to 100 in 5,4 seconds.

Test Hyundai Ioniq 5 profile

Due to the relationship between price (listed at the end of the article), autonomy and performance, the option of the 73 kWh battery with the 160 kW motor and rear-wheel drive is the most balanced. By the way, in all cases the maximum speed is limited to 185 km/h.

As for the refillsThanks to the E-GMP platform, this Hyundai Ioniq 5 accepts 800-volt charges as standard, although it can also be charged at 400 volts without using adapters or additional components. In fact, with a 350kW charger you can go from 10% to 80% charge in just 18 minutes. Of course, currently with the Spanish infrastructure it is complicated...

Behind the wheel of the Hyundai Ioniq 5

During this presentation to the specialized press we have been able to drive the new electric Hyundai for about 100 kilometers combining urban traffic, ring roads and two-way roads. For the contact we have chosen a Hyundai Ioniq 5 in Star finish (the intermediate) and the mechanics with a 73 kWh battery and 160 kW (218 CV) of rear propulsion.

Test Drive Hyundai Ioniq 5

The first thing to mention is that It is a large car with a long wheelbase, so it is not the best vehicle if most of our routes are going to be urban and/or through narrow streets.. Although the front wheels turn quite a bit, the turning radius is wide. And of course, with 4,63 meters long and 1,89 wide, you have to check if it fits well in our garage.

Hyundai has achieved a perfect brake touch, and it is not easy in an electric

Leaving the above aside, the Ioniq 5 is a very easy to drive in all aspects. The direction is light, there is a good glass surface and we have both a rear camera and parking sensors, as well as multiple driving aids. Also, one thing that I really liked is that operation is very smooth.

I mean that despite having a lot of torque, the developers have sweetened the delivery of energy so that it is not abrupt. A point that normally makes manufacturers choke with their electric or hybrid vehicles is the brake feel. Hyundai has solved it perfectly, having a very natural response and without the driver appreciating the change from regenerative braking to conventional braking. Also, allows you to measure well and not give the usual abrupt jerk by coming to a complete stop.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 dynamic test

With the cams we choose between four levels of retention, in addition to the i-pedal function and an automatic mode that will retain more or less depending on driving circumstances.

On the other hand, the general approach of the car is not aggressive or sporty, but rather relaxed and comfort oriented. For this reason, it does not have a very rigid suspension, absorbing soft bumps well. However, the most abrupt irregularities such as manhole covers, projections or expansion joints in bridges are not so well filtered, but they are not excessively annoying either.

With 2 tons and a calm approach, the inertias become noticeable

When carrying this rather soft suspension, in sharp turns or in successive changes of direction it is appreciated that the bodywork swings. In the end, we are driving a 2-ton car and it is totally logical. It is not a vehicle that asks to go at very fast rates, although we even have a Sport driving mode that stiffens the direction and makes the engine response more immediate.

Test Hyundai Ioniq 5 side

Where you feel most comfortable is on the road. The long wheelbase, its weight and the low center of gravity make it feel very plumb and stable at all times. In addition, it has great acoustic insulation for aerodynamics and rolling, so these journeys are very comfortable. And to this we must add that if we need it, we have nothing less than 350 Nm of torque and 217 hp under the right pedal.

In this way, additions to fast roads, overtaking or sudden acceleration maneuvers for any reason are solved without problems. Logically, being an electric motor, with a constant energy that does not falter up to high speeds.

Consumption

You already know that with so few kilometers traveled, the consumption data must be taken with tweezers. We will have time to evaluate it more specifically in the future, but to give you an idea after 110 kilometers the instrument panel has marked 18,4 kWh/100 km. Of course, without hardly stepping on the highway (which is where it will consume the most), although driving cheerfully at many times.
