We have already said on countless occasions that Mazda seems to always swim against the current of the market. There is no doubt that it is a very lawless brand, and today we are going to show you the best example of this. Months ago we tried the new Mazda CX-60, a medium-large SUV that debuted a platform. On that occasion we tested it in its PHEV version -plug-in hybrid- of 327 CV.
On this occasion I ask you to be very attentive because we are going to test it with a new engine that is going to give a lot to talk about. Is called e-Skyactiv D. Yeah, that final D stands for diesel. And yes, a totally new diesel engine in 2023 that to make matters worse is 6-cylinder and cubic 3.3 liters. Note, it is also available with two power levels: 200 and 254 CV.
To know it we have moved to the Girona province, the place chosen by Mazda for the international presentation of this Mazda CX-60 e-Skyactiv D. There we have been able to test it for several hours and with both engines, checking the response of the diesel mechanics and, furthermore, beginning to discover its interesting fuel consumption.
Mazda puts a 3.3 turbo diesel up for sale in 2023
We put the partial distance and consumption of the instrument panel to zero to see how much this Mazda CX-60 diesel spends in real driving. But before talking about consumption obtained, it does not hurt to do a quick review of the data of both variants and discover their technical part, because it is a rare engine today.
And why is it so unusual? First of all, because it is not a small four-cylinder engine... This model uses a straight six, placed lengthwise with, hold on, none other than 3,3 liters of displacement. It is not a joke. I repeat: Mazda has developed a new 3.300 turbo six-cylinder diesel engine and launched it in 2023 for the European market.
In addition, it is offered in two power levels and with two traction systems. Yes indeed, It's always an 8-speed automatic.. Thanks to having a 48 volt micro hybrid system, not only reduces emissions and consumption, but also receives the environmental label Echo of the DGT on the windshield.
3.3 e-Skyactiv D: 200 hp and rear-wheel drive, or 254 hp and all-wheel drive
The less powerful option of this 3.3 diesel declares 200 CV between 3.000 and 4.200 rpm, plus a torque of 450 Nm between 1.400 and 3.000 laps. It is always linked to rear-wheel drive. It accelerates from 0 to 100 in 8,4 seconds and its top speed is 212 km/h. The average WLTP approved consumption is barely 4,9 l / 100 km.
For its part, the most powerful develops 254 CV at 3.750 revolutions and a maximum torque of 550 Nm between 1.500 and 2.400rpm. According to your file, you can do the 0 to 100 in 7,4 seconds -one second less than the least powerful- and reach 219 km/h. In this case we are talking about 4×4 traction. His average consumption approved is 5,3 liters per 100. Will these data be real?
Mazda CX-60: A comfortable and pleasant car to drive
That said, the main route combining all kinds of circumstances we have done with the engine 3.3 e-Skyactiv D of 200 CV and rear propulsion. Focusing on the engine, we have had a good surprise. It is a diesel, but except in very intense accelerations, the engine noise is hidden. This car is well insulated, showing Mazda's efforts to improve driving pleasure and comfort.
What about the answer? Well, if we take into account that it is a large and heavy car, which is close to 1.900 kilos, I'd say it's pretty good. It is an engine that performs very well in the lower and middle area of the rev counter, showing a good boost for its torque, both diesel mechanics and electrical support, which provides up to 153 Nm of extra torque.
El 8-speed automatic gearbox it runs smoothly. It tends to run the engine in its sweet spot and most efficient, but under full throttle, it's quick enough to drop a couple of gears at once and bring it into the high zone. It is not the most sporty, but it is very soft. Also we have driving modes that vary the response of the engine, gearbox and steering.
An important detail is that Thanks to the 48 V Mild Hybrid system, on certain occasions it is able to turn off the heat engine completely, circulating by inertia or with the power of the electric motor. It will only be off for a few seconds, but it is a sample of the power that the electrical part of this microhybrid has.
Consumption obtained with the Mazda CX-60 diesel
During this test we have driven in a completely normal way, without driving for efficiency, going full throttle multiple times to check engine response and overtaking when necessary. Of course, also trying to respect the legal maximums at all times.
We have made a route combining highway, secondary road, some mountain section and a little city with the Mazda CX-60 200 CV diesel and rear-wheel drive. They have been practically 100 kilometers, with a driving style, let's say "pulling cheerful" and the trip computer has reflected a consumption of 5,8 l/100 km. It seems to me a very, very good data for the type of driving. I have no doubt that with a softer driving style, that figure could have been lowered by 4 or 5 tenths.
On the other hand, we were also able to do a journey of about 110 kilometers with the most powerful diesel CX-60, the 254 hp e-Skyactiv D with four-wheel drive. In this case, consumption stood at 5,4 liters, but it is also true that the environment was more favorable with very few kilometers of wandering and a lot of time for bypasses limited to 80 and 100 km/h, in addition to about 50 kilometers per freeway and 120.
Conclusions
When many said that diesel no longer had room for improvement, Mazda arrives and surprises you. You have already seen the consumption, really adjusted in any circumstance. So what It is not a small or light car. It is the size of a Listen Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes GLC or Volvo XC60.
What about the prices? The least powerful diesel starts at 48.700 euros, with 200 CV and rear propulsion. For his part, the most performance starts at approximately 53.800, yielding 254 CV with 4×4 traction.
To remind you, the gasoline plug-in hybrid starts at around 52.000 euros, although they can be reduced a lot if we take advantage of the Moves Plan. The matter does not end there, well Mazda will put another engine up for sale this year, which will not go unnoticed either, as it will be a 6-cylinder inline gasoline with 3 liters and atmospheric intake, although the Hiroshima firm has not yet ruled on its technical part, benefits and versions.
