Test Nissan Micra 0.9 I-GT 90 CV, is it really a Micra? (with video)

nissan micra test

Oddly enough, the Nissan Micra It has been in the market since the 80s. It has never been a very remarkable model in sales, although it is true that in recent years it has been a highly requested product, especially by the female public. In 2017 this new generation of the Japanese model has landed, the fifth, being a totally new model that little or nothing to do with the predecessor generations.

The main qualities of this new model are a completely renewed design, much more dynamic and technological, but also the notable improvements in its comportamiento, in its entertainment systems, in its habitability and in its security systems. Today we thoroughly tested the Nissan Micra with its N-Connecta finish and with the gasoline engine 0.9 Turbo 90 hp. We tell you absolutely everything!

Radical change with a more daring and sporty aesthetic than ever

In many models on the market, when there is a generation gap, it is easy to identify which model it is, since it shares many features with its predecessor. This does not happen with the new Nissan Micra. Just taking a quick look at the body we see that everything has changed in the utility Japanese. Where before there were round shapes now straight lines, sharp angles and nerves abound of tension that give it so much character.

A large chrome V presides over the front and surrounds the Nissan logo, as in the latest additions to the brand. From this V are born some marked shapes that provide Musculature, some create curves on the hood while the others take an alternative path along the side of the vehicle to die in the rear. No less daring are its headlights, with a very Japanese design, or the appendages that are born under the fog lights – in this case more striking because they are finished in a gray tone, such as the mirror housings –.

On its side will highlight the bicolor rims – black and gray – 17 inches; somewhat excessive for a car of this size but, honestly, they feel like a glove on an aesthetic level. No less important are the side line that was born in the front and that marks the waist of the bodywork, the gray molding of the lower part of the doors or the simulation of the floating roof thanks to the black detail of the rear pillar. In addition, and although it generates doubts, it is a five-door body that hide the door handles rear next to the windows; wanting to convey even more sportsmanship.

La back It is also aggressive and sporty, with boomerang-shaped pilots and very straight lines from the small spoiler upper to the lower part of the bumper. Of course, visual strength and dynamism are not lacking in this new Micra on all four sides. Regarding the dimensions of its bodywork, it measures Meters long 4, 1,74 wide and 1,45 high, offering a wheelbase of 2,52 meters.

Suitable for four people

The Nissan Micra offers correct interior roominess for this category, very similar to that of a Renault Clio, for example. The space in the front seats It is correct, with seat adjustments that allow us to feel comfortable – although they do not hold too much in the curves –, but in particular I have had to adapt my posture a bit because the adjustment of the steering wheel, despite having adjustments in height and depth, are not everything as extensive as I would like.

The rear seats are sufficient for four occupants to travel with amplitude and without feeling overwhelmed. Unless it exceeds 1,80 in height, the space for the legs will be generous, with a good margin in height for the head. Despite this, more sense of space could have been gained if the rear windows were somewhat larger. And speaking of the rear windows, it is curious that this car can't fit power windows back here, resorting to the traditional crank. We can travel with a fifth occupant, but if the three rear passengers are of medium height it is not comfortable at all.

La boot capacity is 300 liters, so it is more or less in the middle of this segment B, but it is true that many of the latest releases of the competition are exceeding this figure based on increasing the overall length of the body. The shapes are not quite regular either. We always have the option fold down the second row, thus managing to expand the cargo space up to 1.004 liters.

Very attractive this Nissan Micra inside

The interior design is not as sporty as the exterior, leaving a slightly flattened steering wheel as the only nod to sportiness in its lower area. However, it is not a negative thing at all because, in return, the Nissan Micra offers many customization possibilities to achieve a style as "pintón" as that of our test unit. We can also configure certain elements in Various colors in order to adapt it to our personal tastes.

El touch of the materials is not the best of the market, although in the case of a generalist model for this segment B, it is something that we are already used to and we can expect. We practically only have soft materials in the central area of the dashboard. Due to the alliance of the Japanese brand with Renault, we see many elements and controls inherited directly from the French manufacturers, such as the satellite controls on the steering column. Luckily, the Micra hasn't placed the cruise control in the parking brake area...

On the dashboard we find a 7-inch screen with browser. The operating speed of the browser can be improved and, furthermore, when the sun shines on the screen, visibility is complicated. On the other hand, it has not cost me too much to adapt to their menus or their handling.

Finishes and engines of the Nissan Micra

The Nissan Micra is currently available with five trim levels, which are: Visia, Visia Plus, Acenta, N-Connecta (the one we have tried) and Tekna, ordered from less to more equipment. According to the mechanical offer, is available with three different engines. The only cycle variant diesel is a 1.5 liter 90 hpWhereas in gasoline we have an atmospheric thruster 70 CV and the one used by our test unit, a 0.9 turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline powered by 90 CV. Of course, at least for now, we cannot associate it with an automatic transmission.

As we've already said, we tested the IG-T engine, which is a 0.9-liter three-cylinder with turbocharging and indirect fuel injection. This mechanism develops a maximum power of 90 hp at 5.500 rpm and 140 Nm of torque at 2.250 laps. According to approved data, this version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 12,1 seconds and reach a top speed of 175 km/h; while its theoretical mixed consumption is 4,4 liters per 100 kilometers traveled.

For refinement, better to bet on diesel

The Nissan Micra is a model designed primarily for use in urban environments but he is not afraid to enter winding roads nor on fast roads such as highways. Its handling in the city is simple, among other things because feels agile in heavy traffic and narrow streets. The compact dimensions, a steering with perfect attendance for maneuvering and the reversing camera make urban life easier. In addition, the 90 CV are enough to accelerate quickly in the city, although its delivery in casualties can be improved.

One point that has surprised us about the Japanese model is your chassis. Although he is not a sports car either, flows well between curves "holding" the inertia to light rhythms. In this case, the large rims do not make it excessively dry by overcoming the irregularities that may exist in the asphalt. On the other hand, the grip is more than enough for a car with these characteristics.

En expressways obviously it doesn't feel as good as a Nissan Pulsar but, just like on twisty roads, we liked it in these circumstances too. On the highway it seemed like a product plumb enough and that conveys more confidence than usual at speeds of 120 km/h than other models of the competition and similar size, despite the fact that some aerodynamic noises to the cabin.

We have left impressions on the running your engine for the last part. Honestly, we think diesel mechanics are more appropriate. Although we have not tried it in the Nissan Micra, we have driven other Renault models with the 90 hp dCi and we have found it more refined and pleasant to use than this three-cylinder.

The 0.9 hp 90 Turbo transmits noticeable vibrations and noises at idle, especially in the early stages after a cold start. Once started, its operation is not as smooth as we might expect from a gasoline engine and the power delivery below 2.300 rpm is quite improvable, having to resort to the gearbox frequently and having to stretch the gears whenever we face somewhat steep slopes. The favorable point of this gasoline engine is its consumption, because throughout the test we have moved between 5,5 and 6 liters of mixed consumption.

Conclusions

The Nissan Micra must be a product to consider if you are looking for a model of this size. It will stand out for its hairsalon, for the options customization and for its equipment in terms of fullfilment of security requirements. Among other things, you can count on involuntary lane change alert, blind spot sensor, autonomous braking with pedestrian detection and signal recognition, although for this we will have to go to the highest finishes. Curiosity, without a doubt, the absence of rear windows not even as an option.

nissan micra test

we also liked its behavior in curved areas, showing a lot of confidence and for the fine-tuning of their suspensions; a confidence that remains on the fast track. Of course, the operation of the 0.9 Turbo gasoline engine with 90 CV, known as IG-T, can be improved, so we recommend the diesel variant first of identical power.
