The Volkswagen Group is one of the groups with the greatest presence in Spain. Cupra, Seat and Volkswagen have a large share in the production of new vehicles in our country. However, the paradigm shift the adoption of electrification could turn the situation around. Above all, because to carry out the electrification project that the Bavarian consortium had "drawn in our country" required the support of the government.
A few months ago we learned that the Volkswagen Group had chosen Sagunto to build a battery factory. Shortly after, they announced that they wanted to electrify our country with a multi-million dollar investment. The figure that was handled was about 10 one billion euros but subject to approval of PERTE VEC. Well, now it seems that the Bavarians are thinking of withdrawing the offer and investment due to doubts about public investment.
Everything indicates that the Volkswagen Group would not be satisfied with the funds it would receive from the PERTE of the Next Generation EU plan...
Thanks to the guys from La Tribuna de Automoción we have known that…
The Volkswagen Group is currently analyzing the possibility of canceling the construction of the battery gigafactory in Sagunto (Valencia), whose investment amounts to 3.000 million euros, due to the reduced public funds that it will receivePredictably, the project led by Seat to turn Spain into an electromobility hub in the PERTE of the electric car»
Apparently the investment that was going to fall on the part of the Government was around 1.000 million euros. Shortly after, when the Bavarian consortium published the information, it was lowered to around 800 million. Even so…
«In the provisional resolution of the incentive plan, published on August 1, the support remained at 167,31 million, of which 95,2 correspond to subsidies and 72,2 million to financing»
Finally, “the amount could grow to range between 300 and 380 million” in the final evaluation.
The result of it all is that the fall in investment would have caused great anger in the Volkswagen Group. Apparently they believe that the Spanish Government would not have fulfilled its "promise" and therefore "There is a very high risk that management decides to abort the Valencian battery plant project«. However, the entanglement would be more complicated, since it seems that the government would never have committed to this figure.
According to industry sources, "In no case did the Executive nor the Ministry of Industry transfer to Diess in the negotiations the possibility of awarding aid worth 1.000 million". The reason for this is simple: the PERTE VEC is provided with European funds and is limited by the regulation of support for companies. The mess looks bad, but we will have to be aware because if Volkswagen cancels its investment, there will be consequences...
We'll see what happens…
