What is Lawnmower Racing?

Lawnmower Racing

La lawn mower racing, is a type of motor racing in which modified mower models compete, usually in self-propelled and seated versions. The engines of these vehicles cannot be modified, so the originals are preserved. What is done is remove the blades for safety reasons.

This sport is quite popular in several countries, and it attracts people of all ages. An amusement in which you will not only see the skill of the pilots, you can also see what is the fastest and most reliable mower of all, so it is also a great showcase for the brands that sell this type of vehicle.

However, it must be said that many of the participants go simply for fun, although some others take it quite seriously, as if it were just another motorsport category.

Although the sport developed in the early 70s in UK, the truth is that currently there are also very important competitions in Australia and the United States, in fact, in the latter country there are regional and national associations throughout the territory. In the UK, the British Lawnmower Racing Association would be created, with several young people from the country determined to participate in any type of motor sport, and using what they had at hand...

The popularity, although it has not spread to other countries, has grown, there are even video games based on this sport, such as the famous Lawnmower Racing Mania. In case you want to play a game and try what it feels like even if it is simulated. This way you will feel like some famous pilots who also went through this type of competition, as is the case of the well-known Sir Stirling Moss, known in the world of Formula 1.

Before concluding, it must be said that there are various groups or categories in this type of race. Therefore, Lanwmower Racing can be divided into:

  • Group 1: self-propelled machines with a seat compete in it.
  • Group 2: ride-on and towed mower models.
  • Group 3: It is a type of open motor garden mower, like the Westwood Lawnbug.
  • Group 4: It is a lawn tractor, that is, something bigger.

By the way, in the video that I leave at the end of one of the world championships, you can see the different groups or types that compete to understand them better. Furthermore, I have to add that the races are usually sprint or enduranceIt's not always just speed...

Are mowers fast?

World's fastest lawn mower, Honda

To give you an idea, some of the machines that participate in the aforementioned competitors can reach top speeds of up to 80 km/h, which is not bad at all. But if you want to know a very particular case of mower, the one that holds the record for being the fastest in the world, is the Honda. Together with the British team Team Dynamics, they have modified a standard one so that it reaches a top speed of 243 km/h.

In this Honda Mean Mower V2 that reaches 0 to 161 km/h in just 6.29 seconds, which is not bad for a lawn mower. In addition, as I mentioned before, it reaches a whopping 243 km/h top speed, surpassing the previous record held by the Mean Mower V1, its predecessor.

The pilot who took control of this Honda was Jess Hawkins, a professional British pilot who would be in charge of obtaining the brand for the Guinness Book of Records, and to the credit of Honda, who used it as a good marketing campaign to sell their machines.

Other brands had been beaten before, such as the Norwegian team Corvette-powered Viking T6 that reached 215 km/h. But the one from Honda, with the CBR1000RR Fireblade 4-cylinder engine, 200 HP of power and 13000 RPM, is unbeatable for now. And the best thing is that the external design is the same as the commercial model Honda HF 2622 that you can have yourself…
