When the paradigm of electric mobility broke into the automobile sector, the brands positioned themselves in two different ways. In the first place, those who, from the outset, opted for the idea, starting with the development of all the necessary technology. In second place were the skeptical, those who believed that changes should still be made to promote it more safely. Then there were, in a middle point, the experts in hybrid technology.

El Toyota world leadership in this field it is undeniable and they intelligently stood in the middle. Thus, they have allowed rival firms to launch electrified products, while they were looking for the most efficient way to make the leap. That is why they have taken a while to shape the Toyota bZ4X, the firm's first EV SUV and one of the most talked about in the coming months. We tell you his secrets, because they are already official...

The new Toyota bZ4X is not the first time we have spoken. When the firm presented the first teaser we knew that we were facing a model that, in one way or another, would break with the range. And so much, because when we saw the official photos we were aware of the risk of the bet. As they explain have created an elegant and robust design that adapts both to modern urban life and to the countryside and that does not use superfluous decoration elements.

Thus, the front stands out for showing off a format similar to a "hammer" that gains expressiveness thanks to very slanted Full LED optics. For its part, the side view is simpler, highlighted by slender front pillars and a low belt line. Nor can we ignore the wheel arch trims and the large alloy wheels, up to 20 inches in diameter, which are located in the corners of the bodywork.

Original design passenger compartment where a minimalist dashboard stands out…

If the exterior design of the Toyota bZ4X is groundbreaking and futuristic, the passenger compartment follows closely behind. As a general rule, when we access a signature model, we know where all the controls and controls are. The Japanese when developing models prefer practicality to design but in this case Toyota has taken a risk. Just look at the layout of the dashboard, the configurable digital dashboard and flyer design.

The cockpit comes to life through a 7 inch of size that, in the style of Peugeot, is at the height of the steering wheel rim. According to Toyota, it is the ideal location to see directions without having to take your eyes off the road. However, it is also appreciated that they have kept the analog controls to govern the climate control and the shortcuts to the infotainment system. In addition, the perceived quality seems high.

The theme of the interior design is "lagom", a Swedish word that expresses that something is "just perfect".

Ultimately, Toyota takes the opportunity to extol the habitability of the bZ4X. According to the press release, it has a generous wheelbase, although they do not indicate the exact data. This length would give it remarkable legroom among models in its segment. In addition, the trunk has a volume reaching 452 liters. To make it more versatile, it still has an adjustable tray in various positions and heights.

New technique: new e-TNGA platform, all-wheel drive and 71,4 kWh capacity battery...

The last section to evaluate the new bZ4X is its technique. According to Toyota, it is the first vehicle built on the brand's new BEV-specific platform. Is named e-TNGA and follows the precepts of the version that we already know in the Corolla, RAV4 or Camry. One of its great advantages is that the battery is very thin and located under the floor, forming part of the chassis. In this way, it helps to achieve a very low center of gravity.

Regarding the powertrain, there are two options to choose from. The front wheel drive version has an electric motor 150 kW (204 hp) of power and 265 Nm. Thanks to it, it signs an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 8,4 seconds and reaches a maximum of 160 kilometers per hour. For its part, the all-wheel drive version reaches the 217,5 hp and 336 Nm of torque with the same top speed and a step from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour of just 7,7 seconds.

According to Toyota, it is expected to have a range of more than 450 kilometers according to the WLTP homologation cycle.

To power the drivetrain, Toyota relies on a lithium ion battery with 71,4 kWh capacity. For charging, the bZ4X has an 11 kW three-phase on-board charger, although it also has a fast charge. In fact, you can recover 80% of the autonomy in about 30 minutes if a 2 kW CCS150 charger is used. In another order, you have a refrigeration system to work in an optimal temperature range.

La single pedal driving will also be available. Thanks to it, the driver will be able to regenerate energy when braking without having to use the brake. Finally, it will be the first production Toyota model to offer the "One Motion Grip" steering-by-wire system that dispenses with the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels and launches the One Motion Grip control that replaces the traditional steering wheel with a reduced twist.

When will the new Toyota bZ4X hit the market?

According to the official press release published by Toyota, the bZ4X will be presented in Europe on December 2. Later the online reservation process will open for those customers who want to be the first to be able to secure one of the first units to be manufactured. We imagine that it will be then when they give more details and perhaps how the equipment levels will be shaped for some markets in the region.
