Does your car vibrate when braking? Causes and solutions

Reasons why a car vibrates when braking

If you notice that your car vibrates when braking It is a symptom that it has a fault that can be located in many parts of the car. In this article we are going to give you the possible causes of the problem, taking into account the probabilities that each one of them will occur. Whether you are catching up to go to the workshop with clear things, or if you are looking to solve it on your own, we give you some useful tips to detect the mishap and solve it.

The first thing you have to be clear is that the vibrations or tremors only occur when you step on the brake. If your car shakes in other circumstances, such as when reaching a certain speed, it is most likely that you are facing other possible damage. Once you're sure it's braking, here are the possible causes, ordered from most common to least common:

Vibrations due to brake discs

The brake discs are the cause of the vibration when braking

Sometimes when subjected to the breaks to intensive use, the change in temperature causes the brake discs to warp. As the brake disc is an element that rotates, the curved part rubs more intensely against the pad in each of the turns, thus causing a vibration that can be reflected in the steering wheel, the brake pedal or the car in general. In addition, if the deformation of the disc is large, it causes a loss of braking efficiency that can be dangerous.

The first thing to do to detect this fault is remove the wheel to see if the brake disc is warped. If it's a serious case, you may be able to see it naked eye looking at it from the side. Things get complicated if the curvature is slight, because you may need a dial gauge.

This tool is a meter that is fixed on a surface and if when sliding it over it there is any variation in the force with which it rubs, the watch tells you. If you are a handyman who is fond of mechanics, you can get one for about 30 euros. Even so, we recommend that you check if it is another cause than those indicated below before spending money.

Dial gauges are used to measure brake sag without the car vibrating when braking

If you do find that your car vibrates when braking because the brake discs are deformed, the possible solutions are change them together with the pads or repair them. This second option will not be offered to you in most workshops and we do not recommend it either. If you have a budget, it is better to replace them with new ones.

Vibrations due to damaged bushing

The hubs can also be the cause of the vibration when braking.

The hub or hub is the circular piece to which the brake disc is attached. Both the rust accumulated in an old car, as well as a strong blow to the wheel or a bad assembly can cause this part to have too many imperfections for it to turn properly and, therefore, that the brake disc does too. For this reason, if you have used a dial gauge on the disc, you will have to disassemble the brake and use it in the same way on the hub to see if it is the one that rotates incorrectly.

If the fault is in the hub, we can find the added mishap that the brake disc has also deteriorated. This happens because if the disc is placed on a misaligned element, it itself turns badly, having more friction in some parts than in others. If this situation is allowed to last long enough, the disk will eventually fail as well. However, if you see that the hub is covered in rust, you can try cleaning it to see if the problem goes away.

Vibrations when braking by the bearings

The bearings can be caused by the car vibrating when braking

This cause is unlikely and if it occurs it is difficult to detect. A defective bearing can cause vibrations, but not in a clear and constant way. Being made up of small, constantly moving parts that can change orientation, vibrations can appear and disappear seemingly arbitrarily. Even, -and this is where the complication is for your case- sometimes they can appear when braking and can make us believe that the origin of the problem is the brake discs. To differentiate it, this fault is usually accompanied by a noise that occurs in certain conditions such as in a curve, when braking, etc.

If your car vibrates when braking due to a damaged bearing, you will have to replace it with a new one. The price varies a lot from one brand to another, but it can cost you around 100 euros per wheel. This element is not easy to replace, so we recommend that you go to a workshop to have it done correctly, unless you have good mechanical knowledge and tools to do so.

Other unlikely causes why it vibrates when braking

Brake pedal

  • unbalanced tires: This case manifests itself as a constant vibration when reaching certain speeds, so you should not consider this option if your car only vibrates when braking. If this is the mishap, what may have happened to you is that the vibrations are there without you braking, but when you do, they intensify enough for you to notice them. So sharpen your senses just in case.
  • Another possible cause of vibrations is wear ball joints and suspension mounts, defects that are easy to detect in any ITV review or yourself if you listen certain noises.
  • Worn shock absorbers: This problem does not cause vibrations by itself, the only thing that can happen is that they amplify them when they are caused by other malfunctions.

It is important to check the shock absorbers

Ultimately

Car vibrates when braking

All the vibrations when braking are a symptom of fault which is not always located in the brakes. If you car vibrates when braking it may be that:

  • be unbalanced tires and rims. This is the least likely case, since then the car (especially the steering wheel) would always vibrate, without the need to brake. Simply braking "amplifies" the vibration who arrives at the car.
  • Shock absorbers are worn. As before, it is unlikely, since some very worn shock absorbers it is difficult for them to produce oscillations, they simply…amplify them.
  • be damaged brake discs. Due to a specific heat or several sessions of intense use, the discs have become deformed or "warped", causing the entire car to vibrate with more or less intensity when braking.

Cracked and warped disc causing vibrations when braking

  • El bushing is damaged. Due to the passing of the kilometers, the lack of grease, excessive efforts (for example a strong blow to a wheel) or simply a bad assembly (both when building the car and in a possible repair) cause the bushing is out of tolerance and rotates eccentrically or misaligned.

How to Live Aligned with the brake disc is attached to the hub, if the hub turns badly, the disk does too, so it is often difficult to know which of the elements causes the problems beforehand. vibes.
It also sometimes happens that a damaged hub ends up damaging the discs and vice versa, so the repair is often done like this:

  • Visual inspection of the brake disc. If at first glance it is damaged, it is replaced together with the pads and the problem should be solved.
  • When the disc does not appear damaged to the naked eye, it is disassembled and checked with a dial gauge for warpage. If the warping is scarce, it can be rectified with the appropriate tool, if not, it is replaced.

Measuring disc runout with a dial gauge

  • If disco is not warped when measured with the dial gauge, the vibrations are almost certainly caused by the hub. It will be necessary to replace the bearings, assemble and check with a dial gauge. Sometimes the disc will also have been damaged by the bushing damage and we will have to change them, with the consequent outlay.
  • Another possible cause of vibrations is the wear of ball joints and suspension mounts, damage that should be detected at any ITV inspection.

a little differently, when the ABS kicks in you feel like you're braking with your feet, it feels like a drag.

    2.    Rafael said

The solutions could be different. Normally when a wheel bearing "goes away" they previously make a lot of noise.
The next and normally most probable is the bearing assembly, which together with the "crosshead" and homokinetic tripod joint, due to the fact that the balls that make it up wear out, produce a very high vibration during decelerations.
Finally, it could be that the gearbox bearing connected to the drive shaft was either incorrectly assembled from the factory or was already defective. Normally, replacing the entire drive shaft arm should solve it. It is important to know what it is It's good to change it, not to repair it, because the semi-axis after time with curbs, sinkholes and everything they suffer end up taking slack.
Manufacturers who are very aware of these problems do not want to take responsibility for the warranty and therefore avoid repairing it because it entails a great expense and damages the brand. Normally they usually mount equipment that has already been rectified and sold in the new vehicle. This is totally normal and lawful, the law protects them. Hence the very tight sales prices of new vehicles.

hi how are things!! I have a problem with a DODGE Journey SXT 2010 when braking there is a minimal vibration in the pedal and in the
steering wheel, which the client says he did not have, that vehicle arrived for a brake check and required a change of the front ones, to which
the change of brake pads and rectification of discs was carried out,
We tried it and it did not present that problem, it was delivered to the client but on the third day the vehicle returned, we checked and noticed that the linings that the agency sold us were very hard and scratched the disk, we claimed the linings and they gave us others and turned
to rectify the discs we turned it over and it did not present the problem, they took it away again, and the next day the owner told us that she continued with the same problem, we checked it and it scratched the disc again, we changed for another brand of brake pads ( BENDIX) and again the discs were rectified, it was tested, it was delivered and the next day again with the problem, we disassembled it and took the discs to be rectified elsewhere, where a centering chock was used, to perfectly center the disc, and indeed we noticed that they were badly rectified, after this we put it together again and we were testing it for 2 days and without problems but on the third day the problem returned, even though it is already minimal, ….it improved a little…………..which could be the problem, suspension? because it does not have much mileage, so that it is already the suspension.
the vehicle behaves well on flat and bumpy roads, it does not make any noise in suspension, it only makes that problem when braking,
…….what problem could it be or what could I check, or could it be an ABS problem (and no warning light on the dashboard lights up)

I was first diagnosed with rectifying discs, so I did and I improved... but after about 4 months it came back slightly now they diagnosed me with the fork hubs, it seems to me that this last one is going to be the detail since the ones that I put on 6 months ago came out cheap and have already broken.

Alfredo, you say that you have tried everything… have you balanced tires? If it only occurs at a certain speed, the symptom is a resonance, possibly with balancing or replacing the tires it will be corrected. If you have already changed discs and pads, the next thing would be the bearing.

I have a 2005 CRV, when braking the steering wheel moves very badly… I changed the double bearings on the rear wheels, but they did not have the ones that have the ABS sensor. A mechanic tells me that it is because of that and another tells me that it is the brakes that he sends to rectify the discs and change pads. what dou you recommend? I think that the ABS is failing because it does not have the sensor connected but it should always fail and the brake pedal hits when braking (forgive me) at more than 50 km.

    regards

    Hi Luis
I have a Nissan Murano with 150.000 km, every day when I enter and leave the garage I do quite a few small maneuvers to park, because the space is fair, could this be the reason why my steering vibrates when braking, especially on the 80 or 90 km/h? … what could be damaged? … the previous front covers were worn more on one side …. What type of workshop should I go to? . Thank you very much, your tips are very useful.

Hello Luis, I have a strong vibration when braking on the left side of a Golf IV, this caused the internal breakage of the disc that already had a lot of rust and was falling apart, I replaced discs and pads with new ones, but it went from less to more again and it is on the left side, already reading here I think of the bearing, the sensation is of the oval disk even at very low speed I feel as if it were a boat in the sea, a come and go, that a half turn of the one wheel brakes more than the other and aside from being uncomfortable, I know it's dangerous because I can't brake very hard when I need it. I'm waiting for your answer if you're so kind, thank you.

HELLO I HAVE A GOLF IV 1.9 TDI,
WHEN I BRAKE AT SPEED, MY STEERING WHEEL VIBRATES, I CHANGED BRAKE DISCS, BUSHINGS AND BEARINGS BUT AFTER A FEW KILOMETERS IT HAS THE SAME FAILURE AGAIN. THE CAR BRAKES BUT THE VIBRATION MAKES INSECURITY THAT MAY BE BECAUSE MY MECHANIC IS GOING TO CHANGE THE DISCS AGAIN AND IT WOULD BE THE THIRD TIME

Hi, my name is Luis. I had the same problem, but I solved it by changing the 4 disc brakes and aligning and balancing. The problem was in the rear rotor disc, the right one, that's why when it braked, it was in the front, but it wasn't like that, it was the one in the back, I hope. do it and your car is good luck

Hi, today I went up to the snow with my Córdoba seat and something very strange happened to me. When I got into the car to get off... when I checked... the ABS warning light stayed on. I turned off the vehicle again and did another check in which the warning light stayed on again and I had no choice but to continue driving. Shortly after starting to go down, the warning light went off and I began to notice the action of the abs on the brake pedal. .. but only for a short period since I had to go down the pass skidding and hitting..
The strange thing is that the abs stopped working and the failure warning did not go off on the dashboard either.
Another thing that I noticed before was the poor braking of the car... like jerks...
These days I will take the car to the workshop, but I would like to know a little about what it can be. Thank you

Hello, I have a 2009 Routan, it happens that when I start accelerating in D and it starts to move forward, there is a kind of drag on the front wheels and the anti-lock and abs warning lights come on, when the warning light is on I can move forward and nothing happens you no longer feel that drag. Also when I brake sharply that drag occurs. Fortunately, when I'm already over 40 km/h, that drag no longer occurs when accelerating or braking. but I notice that it feels like a little jerk when accelerating on the highway.

Good evening, a question, I have a 4 a2013. When braking gently at high speeds, the car begins to vibrate in the rear. If I step a little harder it stops. My car has 57k km. The rear brake pads are already at the limit for change. Tell me, could it be just the change of pads or could it be something else. The car has not lost performance under braking.

I have a problem with my 2009 Chevi Malubu, everything works fine, except that after running it for a while (20 min) and stepping on the brake, the car shakes and the suspension knocks as if the car were making small jumps with the tire on the side. from the pilot and when I go slowly and brake nothing happens until I go fast again and after a few minutes it does it again (only when I brake) any advice???

What if the front tires feel a little open? that is to say, that damage where it is solved with some McPherson nuts.
