Land Rover It is a somewhat old-fashioned brand and little prone to changes. The English have extensive experience in the production of large-capacity SUVs. He Land Rover Discovery It is one of the longest-running models of the brand, and one of its most successful models in terms of number of sales. It has a cheaper and smaller brother, the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

The first Discovery was introduced in 1989 as a 1990 model. The idea behind its creation was to conceive an off-road vehicle with great capabilities, just like the Defender, but with a better use for day-to-day use and on the road. Although initially it was to be allocated within the range of the Land rover range roverFinally, the brand decided to put it up for sale within the Land Rover matrix.

Currently the Land Rover Discovery reaches its fifth generation. The last one presented in 2017. Important changes are introduced at all levels, from the aesthetic to the technological section. The off-road capabilities remain intact, although it continues to add qualities for use on conventional roads. At the end of 2020 it is updated with the corresponding facelift, introducing technological and mechanical improvements.

Technical characteristics of the Land Rover Discovery

The fifth generation has marked a before and after in the history of the classic model. One of the most important changes is hidden under the bodywork. The chassis of the new Discovery is made entirely of aluminum, something that by itself already represents a considerable weight saving of up to 480 kilograms with the previous generation. This chassis, called the D7U, is the same used by other units in the family, such as the Land Rover Defender, the Range Rover or the Range Rover Sport, although with certain modifications.

Due to its measurements, it is perfectly located within the F segment. 4,96 meters long, 2 meters wide and 1,89 meters high. At these levels with five seats, seven optionally, and a trunk with a cargo volume between 723 and 2.068 liters. Somewhat smaller cubic capacity with respect to the predecessor model due to the presence of the 48-volt auxiliary electrical scheme of the Mild-Hybrid units.

Its off-road dimensions demonstrate its excellent offroad capabilities. 34 degree entry angle, 30 degree exit angle, 27,5 degree breakover angle, with a wading height of 90 centimeters and a ground clearance of 28,3 centimeters. At the end of 2017, the Land Rover Discovery SVX was introduced, a model more focused on off-road use with better off-road capabilities. Finally, this unit is produced in a limited number of units and ends up disappearing from the range quickly.

Land Rover Discovery mechanical range and gearboxes

Despite the considerable weight reduction of the fifth generation Land Rover Discovery, it is still a very heavy model, 2.184 kilograms minimum. That is why it needs high power motors. The range is made up of two diesel versions and one gasoline version.. All units come with a standard all-wheel drive and an eight-speed torque converter-type automatic gearbox.

The diesel range is made up of two engines. A two-liter turbocharged four-cylinder block, belonging to the Ingenium range, is the least powerful option with 249 horses and 570 Nm of torque. The most performance version mounts a Three-liter turbocharged V6 that reaches 300 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. The novelty in the range is the introduction of an MHEV scheme in all diesel mechanics. Thanks to it they manage to reduce consumption and certify the ECO label of the DGT.

Regarding the portfolio of gasoline blocks, the offer is made up exclusively of the P360 that enjoys a three-liter inline six-cylinder block with which it develops 360 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. The latter, like the diesel engines, enjoys MHEV technology and the ECO label. All engines, mainly gasoline, stand out for their high consumption, between 7,9 and 10,4 liters per 100 kilometers traveled.

Land Rover Discovery equipment

With the arrival of the fifth generation of the Land Rover Discovery, the classic off-roader takes a significant leap in terms of quality and equipment. Inside quality materials and good fits are used that give the occupants a great feeling of comfort. Many of its elements come from his brother, the Range Rover.

Despite the considerable generation gap, Land Rover maintains its philosophy of functionality intact. All the buttons are large, and above all the simplicity of use stands out. The range of equipment is divided into a first selection of finishes: Discovery and R-Dynamic, we also find five trim levels: S, SE, HSE and Metropolitan Edition. At each jump we not only increase the number of systems, we also modify different aspects of the exterior design.

As far as equipment is concerned the Land Rover Discovery can have a huge number of latest generation systems. It is worth noting the presence of keyless entry and start, sunroof, connectivity for mobile devices, LED headlights, three-zone climate control, rear camera, multimedia system with touch screen up to 11,4 inches, digital instrument panel, navigator, and a good team of aids and security assistants.

The Land Rover Discovery according to Euro NCAP

The Land Rover Discovery passed the demanding Euro NCAP crash tests in 2017 obtaining 5 stars. The score was distributed as follows: in protection for adult and child occupants, it achieved 90% and 80%, respectively. Pedestrian protection in the event of a collision was 75% and driving aids provided 73%. These valuations remain valid in the renewal launched at the end of 2020 as there is no change in the structure of the vehicle.

The Land Rover Discovery of Km 0 and second hand

The Land Rover Discovery is one of the most emblematic models of the English firm. Throughout its history, three generations have been marketed, so in the second-hand market we can find some units at a good price. The average depreciation of the Discovery is 30%, a value that places it in the middle of the segment.

Prices vary a lot depending on the generation in which we are interested. The cheapest prices start at 1.000 euros for first-generation models with more than 200 thousand kilometers accumulated. As for the Km 0 channel, the units are scarce. All of them correspond to the latest generation, prior to the 2020 facelift, with a variety of mechanics and finishes. Prices in that case start from amounts close to 65.000 euros.

Land Rover Discovery rivals

The Land Rover Discovery enters a segment of the market that is not very commercial. Its capabilities as an off-roader are far superior to the average of its rivals, and that makes it stand out among them. Nevertheless, the regular buyer in this segment puts quality and comfort before offroad capabilities. Within that spectrum we find rivals such as the BMW X5, Listen Q7, Mercedes GLE, Jaguar F‑PACE or Volvo XC90 among other options. Nor can we rule out his brother, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport.
